PROJECT UNIT 2 Cell Analogy Project OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate knowledge of cellular structures and functions by constructing a model that creates and association of functions. PROCEDURE: 1. Brainstorm: What can you relate a cell and its parts to? Examples: A story, The Human Body, A song 2. Decide if you would relate your topic to the parts of a plant cell, or the parts of an animal. Think about the functions/structure of animal and plant cells and how you could relate that to your Analogy. 3. Once you have decided on your topic, begin to relate the functions of the cell to the functions of your model. . For example: If you pick the Human Body, what part in the human body is like the nucleus, meaning what part of the human body is in control of the body, just like the nucleus is in control of the cell? 4. Create some type of visual aid to showcase your information: Ex: Poster, PowerPoint, Story book, Video, Internet Blog, Brochure, Create some type of review game, or Flyer 5. When finished you will report back to the classroom on your comparison with a presentation. During your presentation, you are required to explain why you compared each cellular structure to the structure on your model, and explain how their functions associate with one another. REQUIREMENTS (CELLULAR STRUCTURES): You only need to pick 10 structures below to compare. Plant Cell Parts: Cell Wall, Cell Membrane, Nucleus, Nucleolus, Nuclear Membrane, Cytoplasm, Chloroplast, Ribosome, Central Vacuole, Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum, Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Apparatus Animal Cell: Cell Membrane, Cytoplasm, Mitochondria, Golgi Apparatus, Nucleus, Nucleolus, Nuclear Membrane, Ribosome, Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum, Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum, Flagella, Lysosome GRADING: See Rubric on Backside DUE DATES: Idea/Rough Draft: ___________________________________________________________ Materials/In-Class Work Day: ___________________________________________________ Final Project: ________________________________________________________________ GRADING: Visual Aid Appearance 10 Visual Aid was thoughtfully put together, neatly organized and constructed. The group went above and beyond to create an original idea for their project/visual aid. 8 Missing 1 requirement from the “10” 6 Missing 2 requirements from the 4 Missing 3 requirements from the “5” 2 Missing 4 requirements from the “5” 0 No visual aid Information 3 points for each structure comparison. 1 point for explanation of cellular structure function. 1 point for explanation of model structure function. 1 point for how they associate to one another. Participation 5 Student brought in their share of materials, and actively participated in the project contribution and visual aid construction in class. Group was able to complete most of project in class 4 Missing 1 requirement from the “5” 3 Missing 2 requirements from the “5” 2 Missing 3 requirements from the “5” 1 Missing 4 requirements from the “5” 0 Did not participate in class 4 Missing 1 requirement from the “5” 3 Missing 2 requirements from the “5” 2 Missing 3 requirements from the “5” 1 Missing 4 requirements from the “5" 0 Did not participate or give a presentation Presentation 5 Presentation was easily heard, well presented and articulated with energy. Presenter knew their information and did not read material and shared equal responsibility in presentation. TOTAL POINTS: _______________/50 points
