In this unit learners will learn about fitness testing used by
a uniformed service and about the required standards of
physical fitness. The learner will be given an opportunity
to assess their own fitness against specific criteria and
to develop and refine a personal programme of training
to help them achieve and maintain the levels of fitness
necessary for admission to their chosen uniformed service.
Learners will also consider how diet and exercise contribute
to overall fitness.

Army fitness test

1.1
Identify physical fitness tests used in the recruitment
process by a specific uniformed service
The Army’s fitness test is carried out at the Army Assessment Centre. The exact standards you need
to meet will depend on the unit you intend to join and your job. The tests check both strength and
stamina.
Static lift
This means having to lift a power bag and place it on a surface at 1.45m.

Jerry can test
This means you will need to carry a pair of 20kg water containers over a course (between 30-120m).
2.4km (1.5 mile) run
This requires you to complete a timed run. The course is on level ground and has a good surface.
Royal Navy fitness test
A
The Royal Navy’s fitness test, assuming you have passed your medical and eye tests, requires you
to complete a 2.4km run on a treadmill. The exact times that you need to meet will depend on your
age and gender. They will also differ if you are applying to become a diver or a member of the Royal
Marines.
Royal Air Force fitness test
S
The Royal Air Force’s fitness test is similar to the Royal Navy one and consists of a 2.4km (1.5 mile)
run. The run takes place on a treadmill.
You will also need to complete a number of press ups and sit ups to a stated standard. The times and
numbers will depend on your age and gender.

Perform fitness tests to identify current levels of fitness
LE
A fitness test can be designed to test all aspects of fitness. The fitness tests that you will have
to perform as part of the recruitment process are all designed to accurately measure specific
components of fitness.
They are tried and tested. This means that they should produce the same results for an individual
whatever the place or time.
It is important to remember that there are variables that can affect the outcome of any fitness test:
Time of day.
Weather and environment.
Accuracy of the measurements.
How hydrated you are and how long it is since you last ate.
Your current health.
Whether or not you are taking medication.
