Exercise classes
Lectures
The lectures are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The schedule can be found on the
course website:

Attendance to the lectures is not mandatory, but highly recommended. Exercise classes
Besides lectures on Tuesdays and Thursdays we also provide an opportunity to work on
exercises for the statistics track ("werkcollege" in Dutch) on Thursdays from 17:15-19:00.
The exercise classes will start on Thursday September 10.
Research project
For the practical track of this course you have to perform a small research project in a team of
4 students. In the process of this project you will be supported by teaching assistants during a

weekly research workshop ("practicum" in Dutch) on Tuesdays. Attendance to these
workshops is mandatory. An overview of the activities per week can be found on the course
website on the page "Structure http://www.cs.uu.nl/docs/vakken/wo/structure.html". More
details about the various activities and tasks per week can be found in the instruction manual
for the workshops:
Make a copy of this document and read it carefully, since this gives you a precise and
detailed list of everything you have to do. Consult this manual first before you send me an
email that you do not know what is expected of you.
If you have followed the INFOWO course last year and you received a grade of at least 6.0
for the research task, you can request an exemption from the research task. For this you have
to send an email before Monday September 7 09:00h with such a request. If your reason for
exemption is correct, you will receive a confirmation from us. You cannot get a valid
exemption without this email confirmation.
Registration
For practical purposes all students who have to take part in the research project will be
assigned to one of five groups for these workshops, and within each group students have to
work in teams of 4 students each. Since Osiris is not really capable of handling this task of
assignment to groups and teams, the coordinator will do this assignment offline. The
assignment of students to teams and groups will be published as a list on the course website
on Monday September 7, at the end of the afternoon. Note that the group on that list is the
group you have to use to find the right room for the practicum meetings! We do not use the
assignment to groups as in Osiris for the meetings! The team that you will be assigned to is
the team that you have to work with, so make sure you get to know each other during the first
meeting. I will also try to get everyone to meet his team during the break in the firsts statistics
lecture, so you might want to get out of bed early to be there. To make sure that we get all
students assigned properly you have to register for the research track. This is done online on
the following webform:
viewform
You have to register before Sunday September 7 23:59h! If you want, you can form your
own team beforehand and indicate this on the online registration. You can even do this if
your team is only two or three students, we will assign students to make up the team to four
members. We only allow teams to be either all bachelor students or all master students, no
mixes. If you have not registered in time, you cannot participate in the research project, and
consequently you cannot complete this course.
Hope to see you at the first lecture!
