These provide a wide range of entertainment – from the thrills of the alternative juggling Circus saturdays Geeks through the burlesque mayhem of Cirque du Platzak, the tenderness of Acrojou and the surrealism of Avanti to the laugh out loud Gloriator. Highlights of the season are Blacksmiths on the Beach when we welcome blacksmiths from all over the country, working on real forges, and the Art Car saturdays Boot Fair, which features nationally renowned artists offering once-in-a-lifetime artworks for sale out of the boots of their cars. Musically, Stade Saturdays is this year showcasing an array of locally based performers with an international profile – including Trevor Watts, King Size Slim and Fumi Okiji – as well as welcoming international artists such as Azzur from France, Afla Sackey from Ghana, dancers from Mayotte in the Indian Ocean and the Verenigde Vrienden Melden orchestra from our twinned town Oudenaarde in Belgium. Take a pinch of street circus, add a dash of dance and a big dollop of spicy music, mix it all together, keep it cooking from June through to October, and you have the recipe for another tasty and exciting season of Stade Saturdays. stade stade stade saturdays saturdays stade stade stade saturdays saturdays stade stade stade saturdays saturdays stade Councillor Dawn Poole, Lead Member for Culture and Regeneration, Hastings Borough Council. 2 White reversed logo when it appears on colours backgrounds etc.. Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston saturdays Mono version To open the inaugural Hastings Jazz Festival on the Stade, we present the princes of freeform. Trevor and Veryan have been in demand for their improvised music all over the world for almost 50 years now, constantly confounding those who say that their ethereal sounds are too ‘difficult’ for the average listener. Their ability to incorporate the three basic elements of music (rhythm, melody and harmony) into their improvised performances creates a connection with their audiences wherever they play. The music is a dialogue played with passion and a clear sense of structure! Sunday 5 June / 2 pm – 7 pm CIRCUS GEEKS PRESENT PROJECT VEE Circus Geeks began as a blog about circus skills and transmuted into an alternative performance company. The group looks to extend the boundaries of juggling as an entertainment and to stretch the possibilities of what juggling can do. Project Vee is a two-person 30-minute outdoor spectacle. Centrifugal circus as roulette wheel meets juggling: danger, skill and unpredictable moments, Project Vee is a nod to a Soviet era circus act, remixed for the 21st century. 4 Humans, steel, concrete and motors meet in an unlikely way as Project Vee takes juggling into a different dimension. SPITZ & CO PRESENT GLORIATOR FUMI OKIJI’S OLD TIME JAZZ BAND In 2000 director Ridley Scott brought you Gladiator; an epic film of bravery, honour and sacrifice. Now, 14 years later, the world-renowned French actress Gloria Delaneuf and her UK tour manager Josephine Cunningham, bring you ‘Gloriator’; an awe-inspiring production of bravery, honour and costumes made of cardboard. Russell Crowe may be unavailable, but this is a show you’ll never forget… Spitz and Co are a French/English female comedy duo based in south-west England who specialise in the comic epic. The Old Time Jazz Band are a group of musicians hailing from Hastings and London performing tunes from early jazz with a coolness and virtuosity that is laid back, yet sets the pulse racing. Their repertoire consists of tunes from the early years of jazz’s inception up until the 1940s, taking in the blues, New Orleans, black vaudeville, Louis, Ella and Billie. The Old Time Jazz Band celebrates the great tradition of jazz song. “Belly-achingly funny” Gloucester Citizen Saturday 18 June / 5.30pm and 7.30pm 6 Throughout the weekend there is a wide range of live music on offer, kicking off on Saturday with Hastings Sinfonia, who will be playing a programme of short, popular pieces and will be joined by two exciting soloists: Christopher Beaumont on xylophone and soprano Thomasin Trezise. Many acts will grace the stage including local favourites Now and Then and Karis Thompson and The Lost Weekend, as well as Katey Brookes and blues singer Randolph Mathews. If this isn’t enough to whet your appetite, you can also learn some new recipes by local chefs and how to fillet fish like a pro from Sonny at Rock a Nore Fisheries. There are also craft activities of a fishy nature for children in the Stade Hall. The Midsummer Fish Fest was set up to promote Hastings Fishing Fleet. The British Artist Blacksmiths’ Association (BABA) visits Hastings Mono version with three days of blacksmithing demonstrations and workshops. saturdays stade saturdays At BABA’s annual gathering, blacksmith artists from all over the country will be setting up their forges in Hastings to give demonstrations of traditional blacksmithing skills. The visual thrill of seeing craftspeople shaping hot iron, the smell of coke fires and the noise of hammers on anvils combine to produce terrific theatre. The sculpture, which will rise like the prow of a Norman longboat out of the shingle, incorporates a time capsule of letters from local residents to friends, family and the community, to be opened in 2066 on the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. Hastings-based sculptor Leigh Dyer, in collaboration with BABA, will be forging a new piece of public art as part of the ROOT1066 International Festival. The parts will then be taken away and formed into the finished work, which will be unveiled on Saturday 10 September, on the seafront by Alfred Place. There will be blacksmith memorabilia on show as well as the 50th issue of Artist Blacksmith Magazine. Food and refreshments will also be on sale. As part of Blacksmiths on the Beach the following performances will also take place on the Stade: King Size Slim Folk Dance Remixed is a collision of traditional and Hip Hop dance and music: high-energy, with a unique remix of Maypole, Clogging, Ceilidh, Street, House and Breakdance with a hint of African & Bollywood to a live soundtrack of fiddle & beat boxing – this is Folk and Street Dance like you’ve never seen it before! They’re now one of the UK’s longest established outdoor performance companies. saturdays Although Avanti shows have come to be known for their trademark use of water, this is just one element of a more diverse field of work. Everything we do embodies the common themes of innovation, humour and what Cath Staincliffe described as ‘daft logic’. Whether turning buildings into public fountains or creating animatronic taxidermy, their work is always entertaining, hilarious and agreeably hastings.gov.uk/stadesaturdays stade saturdays surreal, witty yet absurd. “We are laughing helplessly, most of us, at the sheer bloody cheek of it, the daft logic, the wit, the invention and the humanity. We are soaked. It is a beautiful moment.” – Cath Staincliffe in Paul Herrmann’s book ‘Playing with Fire’. “Avanti Display show us that precise physical based performance and solid artistic content win in the end.” – Total Theatre Magazine Mr Lucky’s Party Saturday 20 August 1pm - 9pm During a tea party a couple begin a celebration. Party hats and even a cake appear, but with each course the weather worsens, the downpour increases and their mood blackens. Imagine yourself in Blackpool’s tower ballroom, with an evocative 1940s soundtrack; a couple, at first irritated Reliquary The Spurting Man Imagine a bejewelled casket making its enigmatic way around your town and wondering: “Who are they? What is that? Just what’s going on here?” Now imagine the thrill of being chosen to peep inside whilst others can only stand and gawp, slack jawed. “What can be inside?”, you hear them cry. The show dissects the unequal relationship between the famous specialty performer, ‘The Spurting Man’, and his downtrodden assistant. Performed to Ravel’s Bolero with no text, this show is meticulous to character and detail. The pompous Spurting Man shows his tricks whilst his assistant, dominated and undervalued, is given no credit for the role he plays. The assistant despises his master. The master ignores the assistant. The bizarre and unequal relationship lays the basis for a series of comic interactions. Avanti will be performing a repertoire of their most famous shows from the past few years as follows: Well, stand ready, for we have discovered a new species, preserved its last egg and it’s about to hatch…..no that could never happen! Or could it? Saturday 20 August 1 pm - 4 pm with each other, are eventually reconciled and transformed in typical Avanti style with a bizarre, spectacular and unexpected twist. Kermiz is a circus performance in which the peculiarities of each individual are revealed and the power of a collective becomes clearly visible. Like a circus adventure in a childish dream (not a sweet story, more like the dark side of a Grimm fairy tale), Kermiz combines the atmosphere of the old circus with nouveau cirque. Le Cirque du Platzak mixes rough and rousing folk music with both traditional and innovative circus techniques, such as balance, acrobatics, fire, balls and self-made clubs, rope, rolling globe, cloud-swing, aerial plastique, bottle balance, acro-dance, fakirism and clowning arts. Since its creation in 2011, Le Cirque du Platzak has played over 120 times, reaching 60,000+ visitors in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Hungary.
