2016 Media Guide - Modesto Junior College

Modesto Junior College
General Information
What makes Modesto Junior College so special? Well…
it is a combination of things. MJC has an outstanding
reputation based on a 95-year tradition of offering educational
excellence. At our college students receive a high quality
education at a fraction of the cost of attending most fouryear institutions. You can take the same undergraduate
college courses and earn the same transferable units without
sacrificing educational quality. This makes MJC a great
educational value!
MJC has top-notch faculty. Unlike four-year universities,
our professors are not required to publish or do research,
(although many of our faculty are published authors.) Their
primary focus is teaching! The professors at MJC that teach
transferable college courses all have a minimum of a master’s
degree in their area of instruction. Many of them have a
doctoral degree as well.
MJC has a huge selection of classes to choose from each
semester. Students can achieve an associate degree or prepare
for transfer in over 50 areas of study! The average class sizes
at MJC are smaller than these similar classes at most public
universities and rival the class sizes of many expensive private
college. What does this mean for our students? It means
lots of class choices and plenty of personalized attention from
professors that know students by name.
Additionally, MJC is committed to student success and
backs up this commitment with a full range of support
services to help ensure that students achieve their goals.
Counselors, financial aid, a library with two large computer
labs, a tutoring center and a career development and transfer
center are just some of the student support services available.
So, what makes MJC special? It’s a tremendous combination
of excellent educational programs, fantastic faculty, and super
support services - all offered to a wide range of students at an
affordable price!
Enrollment Services
The Enrollment Services Office is responsible for the
admission of new and returning students to the college and
the enrollment of all students into MJC credit and non-credit
courses. Students can add or drop classes after registration,
file for credit/no-credit, and file for grade improvement.
Admissions verifies student enrollment for insurance, loan
deferment and training verifications. Verifications generally
require 3 to 5 working days to process. The first two are free
and each additional verification request is $7/$15 next day/$20
same day.

Counseling
Counselors provide academic, vocational, and personal
counseling services to MJC students. Counselors are available
by appointment and on a “walk-in” basis to assist students
in identifying needs, assessing strengths, and overcoming
barriers to fulfilling their educational objectives. All
students who have earned 15 units or more should develop an
Educational Plan with a counselor. It is highly recommended
that students take a guidance course as soon as possible upon
enrolling at MJC. Valuable information will be covered in the
course, including the completion of an Educational Plan. Take
a guidance class to help you become a “successful” student at
MJC!

Head Coach Zeb Brayton
Coach Brayton enters his second season as Head Coach of the Pirates after working on staff as an assistant coach from
2004-2014. Coach Brayton believes that accountability and hard work are the key components of a successful program.
The 2015 Pirates had six players receive athletic scholarships to continue playing at four year institutions, highlighted by
LHP Eddie Machado from Oakdale High School (New Mexico State University) and RHP Brent Montgomery from Escalon
High School (San Francisco State University). Jacob Cooper, a freshman catcher from Enochs High School was selected and
signed by the Chicago White Sox in 20th round of the MLB Draft. The 2015 team also excelled academically, with ten players
recording a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
As an assistant, Coach Brayton’s responsibilities consisted of running the offense, recruiting, fundraising and monitoring
academic progress. During his tenure as the Pirates hitting instructor, Coach Brayton worked with and developed some of the
best young hitters in the area. He has established himself as a tireless worker, always willing to help players reach their full
potential.
In the Fall of 2012 Coach Brayton was appointed Head of Baseball Operations. During that time he created the Pirates
Dugout Club, which has helped raise thousands of dollars in support of MJC Baseball. Coach Brayton’s fundraising efforts
have spearheaded the recent renovations to Pirate Field. Those renovations include: new infield playing surface, new brick
backstop, new fencing around entire field, and a new sound system.
As Recruiting Coordinator, Coach Brayton has successfully recruited some of the top local talent in the area, highlighted by
the incredible 14-0 start to the 2014 season. In 2012, Coach Brayton created a mandatory “Study Hall” program for all student
athletes associated with the Baseball Program. Each year the team’s overall GPA has increased, which has allowed over 90% of
the student athletes to transfer to 4 year schools.
Coach Brayton graduated from St. Mary’s High School (Stockton) in 1996 and received a scholarship to play baseball at
San Jose St University. He later transferred to San Joaquin Delta College where he earned another scholarship to play at CSU
Stanislaus. Coach Brayton graduated from CSU Stanislaus in 2002 with a BA in Physical Education and a Concentration in
Health Education. He received his MA in Teaching in 2008 and his California Teaching Credential in Physical Education

The Associated Students of Modesto Junior College (ASMJC) is a body of students, by the students,
and most importantly for the students. ASMJC will address all student concerns on campus.
ASMJC will be a voice in all decisions made on campus that may affect the student body.
Research shows that students who are involved with one another around social and academic topics
are more likely to develop a sense of institutional commitment. This experience allows them to gain
knowledge in areas outside of the classroom while strengthening their leadership, communication,
and critical thinking skills.
