As a school we had a 68% participation rate. In the future, we may look at a different format for conferences. The Hatchet The Hatchet S C H O O L M I D D L E C O L U M B U S TOMAHAWK MIDDLE SCHOOL Last month members of our Student Council attended a leadership conference at UW-Stevens Point. It was the regional “Go Hatchets!” JAM Conference for student councils from many schools in our area. At the event students build leadership skills and are able to learn and share their ideas with other schools for service learning, improving school climate, and making connections to their communities. Students also heard a motivational speaker on making positive, healthy choices. To commemorate Veterans Day on November 11th, the 5th and 7th Graders as well as the THS Choirs participated in the annual Veterans Day Ceremony. The ceremony was well received . On Monday, Decem- ber 7th, the TMS/THS Bands will perform at their annual Winter Concert. It will be Grades 712, at 7:00 pm in the Fieldhouse. TMS/THS 6th-12th Grade Choirs will hold their Winter Concert on December 14th at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium. We hope to see you there. TMS completed its annual magazine fundraiser and raised over $3000! Thank you for your support! Winter Weather Information As winter fast approaches we need to be aware of the weather. TMS students should come to school dressed appropriately for the weather. This includes riding the bus, as accidents can occur, and heat may not be functioning. For school cancellations, families will receive text and e-mail messages if school is cancelled, which would also mean the cancellation of all activities/sporting events. Cancellation information is also available through the local news media, WJJJQ 92.5 FM, WAOW Ch 9, WSAW Ch 7, WJFW Ch 12. In the Tomahawk School District, the importance of citizenship is clearly evident. It could clearly be seen earlier this fall when the entire student body and staff observed the Ingman funeral procession in silence. It is visible by daily observing the Pledge of Allegiance. It was also evident in the Veterans Day Ceremony held on November 11th. TES/TMS 5th and 7th Graders participated in the ceremony by reading their speeches and singing songs. The THS Choir also performed. Students were also able to observe the Color Guard and hear the words of Col. Paul Russell in his keynote address. Another way students learned about the sacrifices our military families have made was with the symbolism of “The White Table.” A special table was set up in the cafeterias of TES/TMS/THS as a reminder of our MIA’s and POW’s. Each item on the table was symbolic of that sacrifice. We will continue to promote citizenship as an important value in our school. ____________________________________________________________ TMS Fast Facts: Go Hatchets! Check out our Website and Facebook Page www.tomahawk.k12.wi.us/schools/middle/ Enrollment: 306 Grades: 6th-8th School Mascot: The Hatchets School Colors: Blue and Gold Focusing on the Positive At TMS we are continually trying to build positive relationships with students and encourage them to make positive choices. Students can be rewarded for their academic achievement, attendance, hard work, and citizenship. For academics, students can be placed on the Honor Roll each quarter. There are different levels on the Honor Roll dependent on the student’s Grade Point Average or GPA. The three levels are Platinum, Gold, and Silver. For attendance, the three levels are Perfect, Stellar, and Commendable. Students can also earn the Principle’s Award (Not Principal’s) for demonstrating a hard work ethic, good citizenship, or improvement in behavior. Students who achieve the Honor Roll, Attendance Recognition, or the Principle’s Award in any quarter are recognized as part of an all school Renaissance Rally Assembly. All students attend the assembly. After the assembly those students who have earned the awards participate in a choice of activity. Those who do not work on missing work, organize their lockers, read silently, or work on Compass Learning. It is hoped those students will see the value in hard work and Working on School Slogan be able to participate the next quarter. Another way we encourage positive choices is through our PBIS recognition through Hatchet Cash. Students can earn Hatchet Cash for making positive choices, helping others, doing “the right thing.” We have weekly drawings from the Hatchet Cash for prizes. Each grade also has a grade level incentive students can work for weekly. It is hoped that focusing on the positive will improve school climate.
