Dr. and Mrs. Magee

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Magee,
My name is Alyssa and I’m a student at Salt Lake Community College. I’ve spent this last
semester researching Operation Smile and its benefits to society. I’m writing you today to thank you for
this wonderful organization. Operation Smile has helped hundreds of thousands of people across the
world who could not otherwise have been helped. You have made it possible for children with cleft
disorders to smile. You have given them back their dignity and confidence; and you have torn down the
obstructions that might be impeding a child’s speech, education, and health.
It clearly takes a bold move to start up a new business. It’s a risk- one that not anyone would be
willing to take. However, when you began forming Operation Smile in 1983, it wasn’t just your own
money and success you were risking; it was the hope of all the untreated cleft patients in India and
China and the Philippines. It must have been difficult knowing they were counting on you- millions of
people who have never had such an opportunity- and having to find the necessary tools to give them aid
without the sufficient resources.
Operation Smile has conducted itself in a very charitable yet professional way. There is
organization to selecting the doctors and volunteers; there is organization in the administrative offices
and advertisement department. It is clear that a lot of work has been put into founding this great
organization. Although, from my research, I’ve found that it took only a matter of a few months. I
suppose if you’re dedicated enough to a cause, and made the promises to each other and to the people
like you both have, you had to put everything else on hold while putting all time and energy into
creating a strong-going operation.
So on behalf of my colleagues here at SLCC, I’d like to offer my gratitude to you and to
Operation Smile for making this world a better place. We have created a OneSmile page where we hope
to raise enough money for at least one surgery. The small team of students here that have been given
the chance are grateful for the opportunity we’ve had to look into Operation Smile and learn from what
can happen when hard work is put towards a worthy cause.
Thank you,
Alyssa Watkins
