The Geosource UPDATE issue Volume 8 Issue 2, July 2016 Headline News ASP-Quick Supply has additional method to improve pavement life ASP Enterprises and Quick Supply Co. have signed an agreement to promote and distribute ACE Fiber in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas City, Nebaska and Iowa. ACE Fibers is a blend of Aramid Fibers and Sasobit wax to simultaneously address the two major distresses affecting hot mix asphalt performance today, cracking and rutting. As ACE Fibers are mixed in to the hot mix asphalt, and the Sasobit wax melts, over 18 million Aramid Fibers are dispersed throughout each ton of hot mix asphalt, increasing the asphalt’s resistance to reflective cracking, rutting and fatigue while providing improved life expectancy. Aramid is a unique fiber with 400,000 psi tensile strength and microroots that tenaciously anchor themselves into the finished hot mix asphalt. In the summertime when asphalt gets hot and wants to rut under load, the rooted Aramid Fibers provide resistance to the “flow” to the in-place asphalt to mitigate rutting. In the wintertime when asphalt is cold and wants to shrink, Aramid Fibers provide additional tensile strength for crack resistance. ACE Fibers supply: • 50% increase in rut resistance • 150% increase in strength • 140% increase in crack resistance • 290% increase in fatigue life Featured Solution Coir Fiber Logs Coir fiber logs provide an erosion control solution for perimeter and inlet protection. Coir is a natural fiber from the husk of a coconut. These brown fibers are typically used in mats and logs due to their thickness, strength and high abrasion resistance. Coir fiber logs are either plain or vegetated to establish nature’s best defense against erosion: root stabilization. With the ability to be planted any time of year, coir fiber logs minimize the costly outcome of unsuccessful plantings. Coming in either a round or rectangular shape, coir fiber logs also have varying densities to meet project needs. Products: Presto GeoSystems GeoWeb and North American Green C350 Turf Reinforcement Matting and S150 Straw Mat Project Scope: Fontanelle Hills Golf Course was in need of a solution for severe deterioration and dense overgrowth of concrete used to line a waterway. The damage amassed over the course of 2-3 decades and thus was in critical condition. Product Description/Benefits: GeoWeb installation. This project became a top priority for the property’s new owners, who applied for and received a grant from NE Environmental Trust Fund. The City of Omaha, The City of Bellevue, Papio MO Natural Resource District and the Corps of Engineers contributed to the milliondollar project as well. The final decision was to use a soft armor system to restore the waterway. Conclusion/Result: Over the course of 2-3 years, the grading and storm water work was completed. After minor repairs to restore drowned vegetation due to severe weather, owner Gary Garabrandt firmly believes this project provided a permanent and low maintenance solution. Editor’s View I wanted to extend a belated thank you to all of our customers that attended the 2016 Clean and Green Sustainability Conference and Expo. We felt it was a great success based on the evaluations we received. Our attendance was over 300 for four cities and the content seemed valuable to all. If you did not attend, you can go to our conference page for all the proceedings and then keep an eye out here for the 2017 conference. We even gave away a large screen TV at each location and every attendee received a USB power bank and seven PDHs. We are still trying to get all of the follow-ups done from requests for more information. The other important item is to welcome Mattie Eversole to the ASP Quick Team. She will be taking over most of the marketing functions: website, brochures, social media, etc. and I am excited to have someone so qualified on our team and am looking forward to the opportunities for improved communication with our customers. Problem: Toe protection and wave action Solution: Coir logs were installed and planted with plant plugs to vegetate Click Here for Case Study Vegetation growing in to coir log. Project Scope: Walker Lake is a scenic recreational area in Kirkwood with the lake as its centerpiece. Over the past couple of years, a lot of work has been done in and around the lake. The lake is surrounded by a variety of aquatic plants, with the exception of a small space. This space caused concern for erosion as a result of wind-created waves. Monroe Creek is an established roadside storm water channel. The creek has seen many different solutions over the years and contains areas of riprap and vegetation as well as natural stone. In this project, coir fiber logs replaced rubble from old foundation. Product Benefit: Coir logs anchored with wooden stakes solved Walker Lake’s erosion issue. After installation, the coir logs were planted with the desire plant plugs. Monroe Creek used coir logs as toe protection to create a smooth transition from the rocky bottom to the vegetated side slopes. Above the coir logs the slopes were graded and covered with seed and a temporary erosion control blanket. Similar to the Walker Lake project, these coir logs were also fixed with desired plant plugs to increase channel vegetation. Coir logs in place at Monroe Creek. Conclusion: Since the coir log installation, Walker Lake has not experienced any erosion. With the caretaking from the City of Kirkwood, Walker Lake will be fully vegetated soon. Monroe Creek is performing as planned and the vegetation is growing every day. Despite significant rain events, there have not been any signs of erosion. Used in concrete for decades, fiber reinforcement can now be used in asphalt to significantly increase performance of new asphalt pavement. ACE Fiber is comprised of engineered aramid (Kevlar™) fibers and a fiber control treatment using Sasobit™ that also provides asphalt performance enhancement properties. Aramid Fiber •Increases Strength •Increases Crack Energies •Increases Fatigue Life •Increases Thermal Crack Resistance Sasobit™ Treatment •Increases Rut Resistance •Improves Coating of Aggregate •Increases Compaction Window •Reduces Binder Aging To learn more, see our ACE Fiber page. Engineer’s Note Do Something Engineers are often accused of over-analyzing or over-thinking a problem. While it is good to be thoughtful and thorough, we must avoid the old adage, “paralysis by analysis”. We tend to focus on all of the ways a solution may possibly fail rather than be optimistic about the possibility that a solution may actually work. Our industry is working hard to improve water quality and protect the environment so we now have many new and innovative solutions available in our toolbox. Trying something new-toyou for the first time is intimidating and engineers are often averse to risk, so they often continue to use an age-old method (even if it doesn’t work well) as opposed to stepping out on a limb to try something innovative. Let us help you get over the fear of trying something new-to-you. ASP Enterprises/Quick Supply only carries proven solutions that work. Our stormwater management solutions have been proven successful in many parts of the U.S. in many different settings. We can help you through the entire process: concept, design, bidding, pre-construction, construction and post-construction phases. You have trusted us to bring you the best erosion control, sediment control and geosynthetics for decades. Now trust us to help you stay ahead of the competition with your stormwater management efforts. Don’t fall into the trap of only doing what you’re familiar with because you’re too busy to try something new. And the do-nothing alternative is no Company Information longer acceptable. Across the Midwest cities, counties and states are requiring your best effort to control stormwater runoff, reduce downstream erosion, improve water quality and mitigate the adverse effects of changes in land use. Let us help you do something… new… different… better than you ever have before. Call your ASP/Quick Supply rep today. Bill Murphy, P.E.
