C O N G R E G AT I O N
FROM THE RABBI'S STUDY
RABBI BARRY BLOCK
Dear Friends,
I’ve heard more than a
few jokes about a rabbinic
“Installation.” A rabbi is not,
after all, a dishwasher.
The Installation will be a very
special time for my family
and me, as we revel in our new community. Toni and I are most
grateful to Kennon Goldsholl and Julie Shindler, to Leah Elenzweig
and to all the volunteers who have gone and will go far above the
call of duty to make the occasion sacred.
Even more important, a congregation that nears its sesquicentennial
marks an historic moment. After two difficult years, Congregation
B’nai Israel has elected a new rabbi. Now, congregation and rabbi
embark on our shared future, together. And we invite the wider
community of Central Arkansas to celebrate with us.
At the Installation, you and I will pledge our commitment to this
partnership. I make a covenant to serve the congregation faithfully,
and to articulate a vision for a future that follows a glorious if
imperfect history. And the congregation promises to respond, to
engage with your still-new rabbi’s vision with both warm embrace
and careful critique.
Still, after the Installation, transition will continue. For example, I
am still experiencing each holiday with you for the first time. “What
will the rabbi want to change?” is a question that I am only slowly
beginning to ponder. And change will come slowly, deliberately,
with consultation and with notice. Transition will continue, albeit
in a new and gentler form, for another year or two.
Installation is a moment when congregation and rabbi open ourselves
up to the holiness of the journey on which we are embarking
together. Yes, a journey. Let us continue moving forward, together,
toward a future of divine service for Congregation B’nai Israel
within our sacred walls and throughout Central Arkansas.
On October 11-13, let us celebrate the journey’s formal beginning,
together.
Shalom,
Barry Block

President's Message
Dear Fellow Congregants,
My message to you this month focuses on the Installation
of Rabbi Barry Block as the spiritual leader of Congregation
B’nai Israel. The beautiful invitations that we all received in
September provided information regarding the many services
and events planned for the weekend of October 11-13. The
details of the weekend can also be found in this issue of The
Chronicle and online at www. bnai-israel.us. All events are
underwritten by the Congregation B’nai Israel Endowment
Fund. The installation is an historic event in the life cycle of our
congregation. Congregation B’nai Israel has not installed
many rabbis, in fact in the last 87 years there have only been
three such occasions. On Friday night October 11th, we will
join together and unite our congregation and our rabbinic
leader at a very special Shabbat evening service. There will be
many guests from out of town and from our local community
in attendance. The Shabbat morning service on October 12th will honor the
Rabbinic Search Committee and the Transition Committee
for their hard work and service to our congregation over
the last couple of years. Those who will be honored
include Search Committee co-chairs Janet Korenblat and
Jack Grundfest and committee members Mac Lyons,
Jerry Jacobson, Andy Lawton, David Bauman, Carmen
Arick, Scot Goldsholl, Russ Parish, Stacey Ronnel, Amanda
Ferguson, and Eugene Krupitsky, Transition Committee
co-chairs Emily and Rich Lewis and committee members
Annabelle Tuck, Kennon Goldsholl, Meg Marion, Muriel
Lederman, Philip Axelroth, Andy Lawton, Joy Figarsky,
Iris Oliva, Jack Grundfest, Janet Korenblat, Russ Parish,
Ellyn Polsky, and Shae Simoneau.
On Saturday night we will have an opportunity to celebrate
Rabbi Block’s installation and the future of our congregation.
We will begin with a cocktail reception followed by a Havdalah
service led by LaFTY. A beautiful and delicious dinner
featuring our Arkansas harvest will spotlight the abundance

of our state’s delicious products. The B-Flats will provide
wonderful music so that we can dance and enjoy the evening. On Sunday our Religious School will have their own
Installation of Rabbi Block. Children and parents will come
together to mark this special occasion. Our children are our
most important asset. Their participation in this ritual will
build a strong foundation for their relationships with Rabbi
Block and the congregation.
Throughout the weekend we will join together in ritual
and celebration. These events will be highlighted by the
community of our congregation and guests, good food, and
the beautiful surroundings of our Temple. The incredible
duo of Kennon Goldsholl and Julie Shindler, co-chairs of the
Installation Weekend are working hard to make the weekend
special. Thank you Julie and Kennon for your leadership. I look forward to seeing you at Temple as we honor this sacred
occasion and the many blessings of installing Rabbi Barry
Block as Rabbi of Congregation B’nai Israel. LEAH ELENZWEIG

Lifelong Learning
BE STRONG, BE STRONG, AND
LET US BE STRENGTHENED!
“Chazak, chazak,
v’nitchazeik - Be strong,
be strong, and let us be
strengthened!” are the
words loudly voiced in
unison each time we
conclude the reading of
one of the Five Books
of the Torah. We’ve
chosen the phrase as
our Lifelong Learning
theme this year as we
begin a new year of
celebration, study,
and reflection. Please
watch for Adam Rhine’s
beautiful graphic design. His piece was created around the
Chazak, Chazak theme just for us. It will help you recognize
the Adult Education offerings.
“Chazak …is a blessing aimed at the entire congregation
marking the milestone and accomplishment that occurs
throughout each and every year. The Torah readings are
“re-cycled” each year when we begin the cycle anew every
Simchat Torah. Even though the written words of the text
stay the same from year to year, there is always more to
learn from this ancient text and all of the wisdom that has
come since. Each year what we bring to the Torah changes,
as each year our views and experiences are different. Rabbi
Ben Bag Bag said, “Turn it and turn it and turn it, for
everything is contained within it.”
If we are open, we can draw strength from the Torah each
time we read it, just as the Torah draws strength and life
from us each time. Rabbi Harold Kushner teaches, “When I
pray, I speak to God. When I study Torah, I keep quiet and
let God speak to me.”
Our tradition teaches that when we examine and wrestle
with the texts of the Bible and related texts, we find meaning
and purpose in our lives, giving us strength. I hope you
will take advantage of the adult education opportunities to
enrich your mind and strengthen your soul.

THANKS TO OUR TEACHERS!
Judaism has been transmitted from teacher to student
for thousands of years. As Pirkei Avot (Teachings of Our
Fathers) teaches us, “Moses received Instruction – Torahfrom Sinai, and passed it on to Joshua; and Joshua to the
elders, and the elders to the prophets; and the prophets
passed it on to men of the Great Assembly.”
Our Religious School teachers are the most current links
in this chain receiving and passing on our Jewish tradition. Todah Rabah, many thanks to them for their dedication to
this important work.

Sunday Jazz Brunch
The fusion of taste, where Southern meets kosher, topped off
with Pecan Pie and Pralines. Brunch drinks included.
DEAR FRIENDS:
Thanks so very much for your cards, calls and contributions in
memory of my father, RENE LEVY. He loved this Temple and
as you know he visited often. Bobbye and I are so appreciative
of your attention, including the food that was brought to the
house for the minyan. Wishing you the best for a wonderful
year--5774--for your health and happiness.
