IUGB Pre-undergraduate (PUP) Course Descriptions English Courses The IUGB Intensive English Program courses include: Up to 3 Levels of Intensive English that prepare students for college and university studies in any English speaking environment. Information Technology (elective) Mathematics (various electives) Education for Success (IUGB requirement) Writing, Structure and Composition (courses stressing both accuracy and fluency) Grammar Oral Communication (courses stressing both accuracy and fluency) Reading Skills (both intensive and extensive reading) Listening (gives exposure to a variety of media) Preparation for the iBT-TOEFL exam Intensive English Courses Include: PUP Level 1 Courses PUP 0102 Grammar in CONTEXT (3 hours per week) The course provides learners with sufficient and significant information about grammatical categories, and focuses on basic current forms, rules of construction and use, and meaning. The contents cover topics such as parts of speech, word classes, grammatical functions, number, sentence types and their syntaxes, verbs and tenses, nouns, rules of spelling and pronunciation of word endings, modifiers, modals and their related expressions, comparatives and superlatives, voice (active and passive), etc. Students learn to produce correct and understandable sentences through a variety of constructive practice exercises. PUP 0103 Writing, Structure and Composition (4.5 hours per week) Students build and use their knowledge of English grammar using a communicative approach. Students complete a variety of writing activities to develop both fluency and accuracy. The course prepares students for the more academic writing tasks studied at higher levels of proficiency, stressing organization, grammar, prewriting strategies and the writing process. 1 PUP 0104 Oral Presentation Skills (3 hours per week) This course focuses on improving pronunciation and grammar and developing basic oral presentation skills. Students practice speaking accurately through planned speeches, impromptu speeches, class discussions, and debates. PUP 0105 Intensive Reading (3 hours per week) This course helps students develop their reading skills to be effective learners. In addition to developing their basic reading skills, students work on developing awareness and reading progress, building their vocabulary, recognizing main ideas and supporting details from written texts, and mastering test-taking strategies. Classroom activities focus on eliciting meanings of words and expressions and explaining supporting and general ideas, and recognizing grammatical structures where they affect comprehension. PUP 0113 Extensive Writing (3 hours per week) The course emphasizes productive writing and vocabulary building. Creative writing, writing from personal experience, writing in response to literature, and journal writing are all emphasized. A variety of prewriting techniques are used to generate ideas. Social networking websites, blogs, and/or wikis are used as a way of sharing ideas through written language. PUP 0114 Extensive Oral Communication (3 hours per week) Oral Communication aimed at increasing speaking fluency. The course emphasizes conversational strategies, vocabulary building, effective use of rhetorical modes, and social language skills. PUP 0115 Extensive Reading (3 hours per week) Students read short stories, fables, and articles independently. Instruction focuses on developing both reading and critical thinking skills to help students become more effective readers, increase their vocabulary, and develop an appreciation for reading. Classroom activities focus on helping students develop skills such as summarizing, identifying main ideas, describing characters and themes, relating ideas to students’ own lives. PUP 0121 Listening (3 hours per week) Students will become familiar with American English and international accents through listening to videos, podcasts, and other recordings. Focus is on increasing listening comprehension and the ability to follow full-length lectures or any other academic sound material. 2 PUP level 2 Courses PUP 0202 GRAMMAR IN CONTEXT (3 hours per week) This course consolidates the students’ initial knowledge of the categories of English grammar and enhances their level of proficiency by adding up more elaborate rules, principles and strategies for encoding and interpreting various connotations and meanings of English in use. The selected contents touch on topics such as tense and time relationships, verbs, phrasal verbs, nouns and noun phases, modals and related expressions, comparative and superlative, passive sentences, quoted, direct and indirect speech/sentence, etc. The students will learn to generate satisfactory and understandable English through a variety of contextualized and constructive practice exercises. PUP 0203 Writing, Structure and Composition (4.5 hours per week) The course starts with paragraph structure, unit, and coherence in a paragraph, paragraph and short essay organization, and gives students practice in the following types of academic writing (descriptive writing, narrative writing, opinion writing with fact and opinions, counter-argument and regulation, comparison and contrast writing, cause and effect writing with clustering information and causal chains). PUP 0204 Oral Presentation Skills (3 hours per week) This course focuses on improving pronunciation and grammar and developing basic oral presentation skills. Students practice speaking accurately through planned speeches, impromptu speeches, class discussions, and debates. PUP 0205 Intensive Reading (3 hours per week) This course helps students develop their reading skills to be effective learners. In addition to developing their basic reading skills, students work on developing awareness and reading progress, building their vocabulary, recognizing main ideas and supporting details from written texts, and mastering test-taking strategies. Classroom activities focus on eliciting meanings of words and expressions and explaining supporting and general ideas, and recognizing grammatical structures where they affect comprehension. PUP 0213 Extensive Writing (3 hours per week) The course emphasizes productive writing and vocabulary building. Creative writing, writing from personal experience, writing in response to literature, and journal writing are all emphasized. A variety of prewriting techniques are used to generate ideas. PUP 0215 Extensive Reading (3 hours per week) Students read short stories, creative nonfiction, and short novels independently. Instruction focuses on developing both reading and critical thinking skills to help students become more effective readers, increase their vocabulary, and develop an appreciation for reading. Classroom activities focus on helping students develop skills such as summarizing, identifying main ideas, describing characters and themes, relating ideas to students’ own lives, and exploring aspects of various cultures. PUP 0221 Listening (3 hours per week) Students will become familiar with American English and international accents through listening to videos, podcasts, and other recordings. PUP level 3 Courses PUP 0303 Writing, Structure and Composition (3 hours per week) The course emphasizes development of paragraphs, structure, unit, and coherence in a paragraph, paragraph and short essay organization, and gives students practice in various rhetorical modes; academic writing, simple business correspondence, and writing answers to academic test questions. Structure and grammar are stressed. PUP 0304 Oral Presentation Skills (3 hours per week) This course focuses on improving pronunciation and grammar and developing basic oral presentation skills. Students practice speaking accurately through planned speeches,impromptu speeches, class discussions and debates. Structures and vocabulary commonly used in academic and business communication will be stressed. PUP 0305 Intensive Reading (3 hours per week) This course helps students develop their reading skills to be effective learners. In addition to developing their basic reading skills, students work on developing awareness and reading progress, building their vocabulary, recognizing main ideas and supporting 4 details from written texts, and mastering test-taking strategies. Classroom activities focus on eliciting meanings of words and expressions and explaining supporting and general ideas, and recognizing grammatical structures where they affect comprehension. PUP 0308 iB TOEFL Preparation (4.5 hours per week) This course focuses on test taking strategies and skills required in reading, listening, writing and speaking necessary for success on the internet-based TOEFL. PUP 0313 Extensive Writing (3 hours per week) The course emphasizes productive writing and vocabulary building. Creative writing, writing from personal experience, writing in response to literature, and journal writing are all emphasized. A variety of prewriting techniques are used to generate ideas. Social networking websites, blogs, and/or wikis are used as a way of sharing ideas through written language. PUP 0314 Extensive Oral Communication (3 hours per week) Oral Communication aimed at increasing speaking fluency. PUP 0315 Extensive Reading (3 hours per week) Students read short stories, creative nonfiction, and short novels independently. The following courses are offered to university-level students PUP 0308 iB TOEFL Preparation (4.5 hours per week) This course focuses on test taking strategies and skills required in reading, listening, writing and speaking necessary for success on the internet-based TOEFL. PUP 0309 SAT Math Preparation (2 hours per week) This course prepares students for the mathematics sections of the College Board SAT exam. 5 PUP 0310 SAT English Preparation (2 hours per week) This course prepares students for the writing and reading sections of the College Board SAT exam. Activities include multiple choice and reading comprehension question error identification, and full essay writing. 6
