My Personal Colors: Due Jan 5/6 In the novel The Book Thief the narrator, Death, sees the world, people, and events in colors. The opening words of the novel, for example, are, “First the colors. Then the humans. That’s how I usually see things” (Zusak 3). How do you see things in your life? “People observe the colors of a day only at its beginnings and ends, but to me it’s quite clear that a day merges through a multitude of shades and intonations, with each passing moment. A single hour can consist of thousands of different colors. Waxy yellows, cold-spat blues. Murky darknesses” (Zusak 5). _______________________________________________ TASK: Choose a significant or memorable day from your life and create a visual representation which focuses on colors to reflect the events, your feelings, and emotions. _______________________________________________ Part One: 1. Choose a significant or memorable day from your life. It may be memorable because it was a sad day that involved a funeral following the death of a relative or friend. Or perhaps it was a great day that brought you happiness and success through a competition or race. Type one paragraph explaining this event. 2. Recall your chosen day by completing a mind map of events, people, feelings and emotions. Remember that you may have felt a range of feelings and emotions on the day, eg: nervous > worried > unsure > sad >lonely > OK. 3. Think about the colors you would use to describe these emotions. Make a chart with your emotion on one side and your color on the other. Part Two: 4. Now, using the newspaper, magazines and maybe even your own drawings, collect images that represent the events from your memorable day and create a collage as a visual representation of the events, objects, feelings and emotions involved. Try to choose images that also reflect the colors associated with that day if possible. You can achieve this by your initial choice of image and its color, coloring particular images using pencils, crayons, pastels, chalk, or even doing a watercolor or dye wash over the top. 5. There are no rules on how large your collage must be, so get creative! I would love to see three dimensional collages! 6. Be prepared to share your project with a group. This project is worth 50 points total (20 points for Part One, 30 points for Part Two) Both parts are due on Jan 5/6 Absolutely no late work will be accepted for any reason!
