Hillary Rodham Clinton`s French-Canadian Ancestry: Detroit and

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s French-Canadian Ancestry: Detroit and Michigan Connection
Gail Moreau-DesHarnais and Diane Wolford Sheppard, FCHSM members ([email protected] and
[email protected])
In July 2007, FCHSM members Susan Colby and Gabriel Sheridan brought it to our attention that Hillary Rodham
Clinton, on her maternal side, has French-Canadian ancestry. They directed us to the site by William Addams
Reitwiesner, http://www.wargs.com/political/rodham.html entitled: The Ancestors of Senator Hillary Rodham
Clinton (b. 1947). Reitwiesner pointed out that in her autobiography, Living History, Senator Clinton said that her
grandmother, “Della Murray, was one of nine children from a family of French-Canadian, Scottish and Native
American ancestry.” 1 Reitwiesner also indicated that it had been difficult to find details on the ancestry. The only
known fact was that Senator Clinton’s great-grandmother, Delia Martin, married Daniel Murry, on 6 April 1882 at
Detroit. They were married by Désiré B. Willemin, a justice of the peace; their witnesses were George Martin and
Caroline Martin. Delia Martin, age 21 (thus born about 1861-62), was residing in Detroit but had been born at Lake
Superior, Michigan.
Reitweisner also pointed out that a George Martin, age 28, born Michigan, had married Carrie (Caroline) Lochman
at Detroit on 12 December 1878. He indicated that there might be a connection between George and Delia. A
further reference, by Reitweisner, was made to the 1880 Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan census. Reitweisner
indicated that George Martin was born in Michigan, and his parents were born in Canada. The actual census shows
that George was born in Wisconsin, as indicated in his marriage license. We then went to the Detroit City
Directories to see what, if anything, could be found about the family of Delia Martin. We were never able to find
Delia in the city directories, but we did find George Martin, brother Louis, brother John, sister Eliza, and their
mother, Mary Ann Martin, widow of Antoine Martin in 1873. 2
Because we now had, based on their addresses, members who appeared to be in a family grouping, we decided to
see if we could find the family, as a unit, in a census. The first census was for 1850, Howard (Fort Howard), Brown
County, Wisconsin.
Antone Martin, age 35, a mason, born France
Mary A. Martin, age 26, born Canada
Maetolina Martin, age 9, born Canada
Augusta Martin, age 7, born Canada
John Martin, age 4, born Wisconsin
George Martin, under one year of age, born Wisconsin
We next found the family in the 1860 census of Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan.
Antoine Martin, age 43, a carpenter, born France
Mary An, age 36, born Canada
Mary, age 18, born Canada
Augusta, age 16, born Canada
John, age 13, born Wisconsin
George, age 9, born Wisconsin
Eliza, age 7, born Wisconsin
Caroline, age 5, born Michigan
Louis, age 2, born Michigan
We have not been able to find the family in the 1870 census. We have found a Mary Martin, age 58, widowed,
born Canada, parents born Frence [sic], with a daughter Carlina, age 12, born Michigan, not known where father
was born, mother born Canada, in the 1880 census. This family was living in the 11th ward, on Gratiot Avenue. If
this is the correct Mary Martin, her daughter Caroline would have been about 25 years old at this time, not 12.
Possibly this is the missing Delia? We can account for Mary Ann’s sons George and Louis Martin in the 1880
Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan census. We have also found what could be daughter Eliza, age 25 (should be 27),

born Wisconsin, father born France, mother born Germany, living as a servant with the Ernest Metzger family. To
date, we have not found a census that puts Delia Martin in the family of Antoine and Mary Ann Martin.
We again went back to the Detroit city directories, this time looking for the known Martins and Daniel/Donald
Murry/Murray, to see whether we could determine any connection. We began to find connections in 1884. At that
time, Mary A., widow of Antoine, was boarding at 366 Bronson, with her son Louis, a polisher at the Michigan
Stove Company; George, a painter, was living at 389 Bronson and Daniel Murray (Delia’s husband), a fisherman for
SH Davis and Company, was living at 365 Bronson. In 1889, we had the “bingo” year. George Martin, a painter,
was living at 366 Antietam. Louis Martin, a polisher, was living at 528 Adelaide. Marian, widow of Anthony, was
boarding at 199 Antietam, the house of Daniel Murray, a driver for Detroit Omnibus Line Co.
The second entry in the Detroit City Directory to show a “connection” between Delia Martin Murray and the
“established” Martin family of George, Louis and their mother, Mary Ann, was in 1904 when Angus Murray, son of
Delia Martin and Daniel Murray, boarded 654 Clinton, the house of Louis Martin, a polisher.
Both George and his sister Delia were married by Justices of the Peace: George by Frederic J. Barbier and Delia by
Désiré Willemin. Incidentally, both Barbier and Willemin were born in France, as had been Antoine Martin, but no
connection has been found among the three men.
We then checked to see where Louis was married because it was indicated in the 1880 census that he was married to
Jennie and had a stepson, Alexander Grant. We discovered that Louis Martin married Virginie Maingo at Ste.
Anne de Détroit on 6 September 1877. Louis was the son of Antoine Martin and Marianne McDonough [sic].
Virginie (Jennie) was the widow of Edmund Grant and the daughter of Jean Baptiste Maingo and Véronique
McDonough [sic]. Louis and Virginie were given a dispensation for a second degree of consanguinity. 3 This
meant that Marianne and Véronique were sisters; Louis and Virginie were first cousins.
4
Although the priest at Ste. Anne de Détroit spelled the name McDonough, we checked the Ste. Anne Marriage book
to see if her parents, Jean Baptiste Mingo/Maingaud and Véronique McDougall, were married at Ste. Anne de
Détroit. They were married there on 17 August 1846. 5
3
“Relationships, through either blood (consanguinity) or marriage (affinity) were recorded, and marriage
dispensations were granted, by “degree”. A first degree relationship would indicate siblings; a second degree
relationship would indicate first cousins; third degree meant second cousins; and fourth degree indicated third
cousins. Relationships more distant than third cousins (fourth degree) were not recorded in the marriage records.
You can think of it this way: brothers and sisters were one degree, or one generation, away from the common
ancestor; first cousins were two generations away from the common ancestor; etc.” Found online at

With this information, we checked Denissen, and we found the family of the mysterious Mary Ann Martin, wife and
widow of Antoine Martin. 6 She was the daughter of James McDougall and Catherine Godet dite Marentette.
Mary Ann McDougall (baptized Marie Françoise McDougall on 4 July 1823 at Assumption Sandwich, present-day
Windsor, Ontario) married Antoine Martin, son of Nicolas, and (Marie) Odile Richard, on 22 June 1841 at
Assumption. Antoine’s brother, Michel, was one of the witnesses. Their first two children, Marie Magdeleine and
Archange Magdeleine (called Augusta in the 1850 and 1860 censuses), were baptized at Assumption. Marie
Magdeleine was born 21 July and baptized 22 July 1842 at Assumption. Her godparents were James MacDougall
and Marie Richard. Archange Magdeleine was born 19 July and baptized 21 July 1844 at Assumption. Her
godparents were Michel Martin, who signed, and Véronique McDougall. 7 Between the birth and baptism of
Archange Magdeleine in July 1844 and the birth of John, ca 1846 in Wisconsin, the family left the Sandwich area
and settled by Fort Howard in Brown County, Wisconsin. George and Eliza were both said to have been born in
Wisconsin. By the 1860 census the family was at Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan. By then two
more children, Caroline and Louis, had been born, but in Michigan. Their baptisms were at St. Mary’s Catholic
Church in Sault Sainte Marie. Caroline was born 14 July 1855 and baptized 17 July 1855. Her godparents were
Philippe Gooth and Brigite McMahon. Louis was born 18 June 1858 and baptized 19 July 1858. His godparents
were Louis Baudin and Marie Madeleine Martin (his sister?). 8 The birth and baptism of Delia Martin have not yet
been found.
Mary Ann Martin, still identified with her married name, passed away on 27 October 1898 and was buried on 29
October 1898.
“Martin – Our Mother at rest. At the residence of her son, Louis Martin, 654 Clinton ave., Ann Martin,
aged 71 years, daughter of James McDougall. Funeral Sunday at 2 p.m. from residence, and 2:30 p.m. at
Clinton Avenue baptist church.” 9
Based on the evidence discovered to date, Delia Martin, great-grandmother of Hillary Rodham Clinton, was the
daughter of Antoine Martin, born France, possibly from Alsace, and Mary Ann McDougall. Tracing Mary Anne
McDougall’s direct female lineage [underlined in the following Ahnentafel (ancestor table) or Sosa-Stradonitz
System] 10 of Mary Anne McDougall leads to her first female ancestor in Nouvelle-France: Jeanne Ducorps dite
Leduc, who married Martin Massé ca 1670, at Sorel. Based on documented descendants of Jeanne Ducorps, Mary
Ann’s mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA, transmitted only from mother to daughter, to daughter …) is classed as X for
Xenia. 11

Based on the records found in this film, and the preceding one (FHL #1312031) a basic family unit can be
superficially established for the Antoine Martin family: parents Nicolas (Antoine) Martin and Marie Odile Richard;
siblings – Michel Martin, George Martin, Thérèse Martin.

“An Ahnentafel …is a genealogical numbering system that allows one to list a person’s ancestors in a particular
order…The subject of the Ahnentafel is listed as #1, their father is #2 and their mother is #3, then their grandparents
as #4 to #7, and so on back through the generations. In this scheme, any person’s father has double that person’s
number, and a person’s mother has double the person’s number plus one. Apart from #1, who can be male or
female, all even-numbered persons are male, and all odd-numbered persons are female.” From

Through genealogical research, we know that Hillary Clinton’s matriline originates with fille du roi Jeanne
Ducorps dite Leduc. Another woman with that same matriline has tested as mtDNA Haplogroup X (with European
ancestry). Therefore, we can assume Senator Clinton’s matriline is also Haplogroup X (with European ancestry).
For more information on Haplogroup X, see Brian Sykes, The Seven Daughters of Eve, and his discussion of X
(Xenia). Thank you to Susan Colby for this information.
