Headteacher’s Letter
This Week
Dear Parents,
Tues 28th June -Yr 11 Art & Design Technology
It has been a busy and productive week and another very successful week for our
Year 11 students, who are nearing the end of their examination season. The last few
weeks seem to have gone very quickly and I know that pupils have worked tirelessly
to ensure they are really well placed to achieve the best GCSE results they are
capable of achieving.

Weds 29th June -New Year 7 Taster Day
Thurs 30th June -Yr 10 St Dominic’s Taster Day
Friday 1st July – Yrs 7-10 Enrichment Day
I would like to add my thanks to teachers who continue to support pupils, in
preparation for the final exams. This additional support is valued very highly by both
pupils and parents. A small group of Year 11 has been involved in completing the EDCL
qualification, after their main GCSE exams have finished. This additional qualification
counts towards pupils overall points score, which can help pupils achieve even better
results.

Yrs 7-9 Sports Day – Bannisters
Yr 10 – Entrepreneur Day
I would like to wish all pupils in Year 10, who are undertaking their GCSE Statistics exam next week the very best of luck.
Pupils have prepared well and should feel confident about their first GCSE experience. The Maths department has been
very dedicated to supporting pupils and I know how much this is appreciated.
I would like to congratulate Year 9 pupils, who have undertaken their examinations this week. Feedback from teachers
who were in the hall with pupils was very positive. I would like to thank the team of LSAs, who have been working with
pupils, who require additional support, in reading or writing in examinations.
Pupils have been very positive about this examination experience. They have expressed that they feel more confident,
having begun their GCSEs in Year 9 and they are really making progress towards great results in two years’ time.
On Tuesday, I accompanied our Year 7 pupils to The Good Samaritan Mass, along with hundreds of other young people
from Catholic Schools from the Diocese of Westminster. Pupils really enjoyed the experience and were excellent
ambassadors for our school community.
On Friday, we welcomed over 100 young people from Year 5 from our partner Catholic Primary Schools. It was a great
opportunity for our own pupils, to see younger pupils from their primary schools and to work with them in a variety of
different activities. I would like to thank Mrs Wilkinson who led the day and all staff who participated.
Yours sincerely,
Paul Kassapian

ENGLISH READING LISTS
These are the reading lists for the academic year 2016-2017. They are colour-coded according
to students reading ages, not year groups, so it means that each list will be accessed by a broad
spectrum of students from each year group. There is however a designated Key Stage 4
Reading List which contains recommendations appropriate to students of that age group. For
added challenge there are some A-level texts on the list which an * next to them.
English teachers will be informing students by the end of this week which list they should be
reading from.
Please be aware that these lists will be added to over the course of the next academic year, so
please look out for updated versions being shared on the Google Drive/Parent Newsletter.

GOLDMAN SACHS WORKSHOP
Further to my update in last week’s newsletter regarding our recent visit from 20
professionals from Goldman Sachs, I am delighted to share some photos from the occasion
with you as well as some of the very positive comments from the professionals involved.
‘ The student concerned show excellent passion about their subjects and answered all
questions well and with confidence. He spoke clearly and made good eye contact at all times’
‘ Great leadership skills, showed creative thinking’
‘Very focused and skilled and clearly wants to succeed at school’
I would like to say a very big thank-you to the students who portrayed themselves as the
articulate and mature young men that we know them to be. This was a wonderful
opportunity for them to show case their skills and I am delighted that they did so with such
enthusiasm and dexterity.
I will be providing all of the students involved with their feedback sheets from the
professionals as I am sure the students will find this to be invaluable for future reference.

MATHS MASTERCLASS
On the 15th June, twenty Year 7 students participated in a Mathematics Masterclass,
designed to stretch their mathematical skills to the limits and develop their understanding
of the application of Mathematics to the real world.
“We spent the day learning about linear programming and how companies still use this for
finding out the highest profit and smallest loss they can make. The lesson was based on the
discoveries of Leonid Vitaliyevich Kantorovich and how his mathematical skills ended the
war with Germany ten years before expected. Everyone involved enjoyed this day and
learning about linear programming and Leonid Vitaliyevich Kantorovich.’ Darragh Griffin
“Leonid Vitaliyevich Kantorovich was a proud Russian citizen and Professor at a University
since the age of 22. He served Russia in World War Two by coming up with troop
deployment that would maximise German fatalities. This is when he came up with Linear
Programming which is a system for problem solving, depicting constraints as lines. This
method is still used by businesses to maximise profits.” Thomas Haren
“We use inequalities, also known as constraints, to find a feasible region which contains the
maximum or minimum profit for business’s or other enterprises. This is based on the work
done by Leonid Vitaliyevich Kantorovich in order to maximise casualties on the enemy side,
and minimise those on his side during the war.’ Michael Amosu
‘To find out the feasible region we draw in the constraints and shade the unwanted region.
The corners are used to calculate the maximum profit and minimum loss. Christian
Madukah.
At the end of the day awards were given out to all those who had participated:
Jamie Amponsah, Luke Brown, Daire De Haes-White, Viroshan Gamalanthan, Fidelis
Lawrence, Conor Moran, Arunan Nilavannan, Jamal Patel, Tinu Reji, Rares Sofian-Ciornei,
Wiktor Wisniewicz, Aidan Dunne, James Gill, Darragh Griffin, Thomas Haren, Christian
Madukah, Niall O’Kane, Darun Premanathan and Jamie Okoli
And to 6 ‘Star Performers’:
Tinu Reji, Niall O’Kane, Michael Amosu, Jamie Conchado, Rares Sofian-Ciornei and Darun
Premananthan.
ART OF THE WEEK
Art of the week is by Niall O'Kane. Niall has
responded to an 'open' art homework- pupils
were free to establish their own task, plan and
work towards it. Niall knew he wished to work
with some photography and thus planned this
piece of work. Initially Niall collected a series
of old photographs of Harrow. He then
investigated the spots they were taken,
visiting them and attempted to take a polaroid
photo form a similar position. This is a great
piece of work and a wonderful example of
student initiative- well done Niall!
