Please note: The French universities close at the end of July and do not open again until the start
of September. Although Essex is open all year apart from the Christmas break, do not expect
either the teaching or administrative staff to be available all year and especially during the summer
vacation.
Section 2: Structure: double degree/diplȏme
2.1 Commitment to your studies:
The award is of a double degree, at Essex this will require you to study for at least forty eight hours
per week to achieve the work required for this very demanding course. Note; more time will be
required to be spent on in the course in France, as you will then be working at postgraduate level,
there will be more reading and researching to do. Also note that lectures in France can be anytime
between 08:00 to 22:00 and can also be on a Saturday.
The four degree is spent:
Year’s 1/Année 1 & Year 2/Année 2 are at the University of Essex, School of Law.
Year 3/Année 3 Licence (L3) and Year 4/Année 4 Master 1/Maitrise (M1) will be taken at one of the
partner universities in France, (if you were recruited in France, you go to the university that
recruited you).
2.2 Degree classification for the LLB
LL.B English & French Laws with Maîtrise (Master 1)
The LLB in English & French Law with Maîtrise Masters 1 is a four-year degree scheme, where
only the second (2nd), (40% of your mark) and fourth (4th), (60% of your mark) year’s count towards
your degree classification. To precede you MUST pass both the first (Essex 1st) and third (French
L3) years of the degree. The third year in France, Licence (L3) is zero weighted, and the mark is
converted to one English mark by using the final average mark given by the French university for
that academic year, proving that the L3 year has been passed and that you have the right to
proceed to the final fourth Maîtrise year.
Please note: the rules and regulations of any of the French partners on mark/semester weightings
are not taken into account by Essex for the conversion of Maîtrise marks. The marks are
converted by rules and regulations of Essex as being awarded is an English Law degree.
For more details see the Essex rules of assessment and appendix web site:
http://www.essex.ac.uk/students/exams-and-coursework/ppg/ug/default.aspx
The degree awarded from Essex is an LLB with Honours; the title of the degree awarded is English
& French Law with Maîtrise (Masters 1). This is a qualifying law degree as recognised by the
Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Council (BC) of England & Wales, and students
will be able to go onto the next professional stage of training if they wish to become a Solicitor or
Barrister in England & Wales.
2.3 Restrictions on the number of years of study
A ‘qualifying law degree’ is a degree that exempts you from the first stage of the professional
examinations to become solicitor or barrister. The Solicitors Regulation Authority and Bar Council
of England & Wales will not give a qualifying law degree if your study has taken more than six
years: if it happens, you can still obtain a LLB but not a ‘qualifying law degree’ (QLD) . For
England & Wales the SRA and BC may require you to take further compulsory law subjects before
being allowed to go on to the next stage of the legal training. This includes a requirement to take
an EU Law module in France.

Section 3: Further information
3.1 LINKEDIN
Once registered you are invited to join the LinkedIN site for the double degree students. You join
by sending a request to “The LLB/Master 1 in Law – University of Essex/France” group.
3.2 Welcome Week at Essex
Once you are registered at Essex, and irrespective of the French university you wish to go to, you
are required to attend Welcome week. This takes place in the week before teaching starts,
introducing you to the University’s structures and regulations. During welcome week there will be
an all-day French Law Introductory Lecture in French and a visit to the library.
3.3 Email Address for Essex
This is the only email address that Essex will use to contact you, both at Essex and in France.
Your final year, the information on your results is only available on MyEssex.
Please note, when it comes to Graduating, the email(s) from Essex about graduation are only sent
to your Essex email address – please make sure you check this regularly in the lead up to it.
3.4 Intermitting or withdrawing from your studies
If for any reason you wish to stop taking the degree in any of the four years, you MUST complete
the required Essex paperwork. If you have problems and need to take a year out, or wish to
completely withdraw from the programme or Essex, then there are procedures that need to be
followed. You cannot just drop-out from the University (/ies) you MUST inform the universities both
Essex & in France of what you are doing. Please note: if you drop out of the system and we have
no reason, then you are recorded as a fail, no matter what you may have passed and permanently
withdrawn. It would be helpful if you have emailed/spoken to someone at Essex before filling in the
form so that we know the background/ reason why. The information on intermitting (taking a year
out) or withdrawing (permanently leaving the programme and Essex) is available from:
http://www.essex.ac.uk/students/course-admin/intermission.aspx
http://www.essex.ac.uk/students/course-admin/withdrawing.aspx
3.5 Oxford French Moot Court
The Institute of European and Comparative Law, University of Oxford. The Moot brings together
law students from outside of France who argue, in French, over a problem of French law. It is
geared mostly at students for whom French is a second language and legal system.
http://www.law.ox.ac.uk/mooting/details.php?moot=french
Section 4: Internships/work experience
4.1 Convention de Stage
While undertaking an internship, you may need to sign a “Convention de stage”. On the Double
Degree Moodle page, you will find a specific form to complete. Please do contact Mei Mei Tang or
a member of the Double Degree academic staff to get it signed and stamped. Be aware that during
the Summer term, this may require a few days as staff can be away from the office.
8
4.2 Work experience
Work experience information is available at http://www.rollonfriday.com/ recommended by the
double degree students, they also advise to start work experience in the UK at the end of the first
year, and then work in France at the end of the second year.
4.3 Essex Law Career Fair
The Law Fair is on Thursday 10 November 2016, 6.15pm - 8.00pm at the Teaching Centre, where
multiple firms are represented, usually including French Law solicitors and Prettys of Ipswich,
Suffolk; which specialise in French law.
Section 5: From Essex to France
WHATEVER YEAR YOU ARE IN, WHEREVER YOU ARE, YOU REMAIN AN ESSEX STUDENT
3.1 Proceeding to your third year abroad
September examinations in your second year: if you are required to do a second year
coursework re-sit or re-sit an examination in September at Essex, you may NOT proceed to the
university abroad until the results have been published by Essex. You may not go to France if you
fail the second year French law modules. If you are given the option on MyEssex to make a
decision, you must do so and cannot proceed until you have made that choice. The partner
Universities will not be able to register you until they have been given a copy of your results and
have been told by Essex that you may proceed to your third year.
NON- FRENCH NATIONALS: BEFORE GOING ABROAD FOR YOUR THIRD YEAR:
If you are a Non-French national then you need to make sure that you have the following before
you travel:
•
•
•
•
•
Passport: it must have an expiry date that is after the finish date at the French University.
If you are a UK/EU citizen then you are required to have the European Health Insurance
Card (EHIC) and it must be in date. This entitles you to register with a doctor, some dental
treatment and first aid treatment. It does not cover you for a stay in hospital or any form of
operation.
UK citizens can apply: https://www.europeanhealthcard.org.uk/.
Insurance: to travel, for your personal items, especially laptops and comprehensive medical
cover for your time in France. You are required to have this if you are a non-EU citizen.
Non-EU citizens may also be required to have a visa; it is your responsibility to make sure
that you have this in place so that you can start the academic year on time.
Any of the years that you are taking the double degree:

automatically. Or you should receive an email from registration telling you would you are required
to do.
Accommodation in France:
Contact your French University or the students out there if you need help with this. Or look at the
following web sites: Cité - http://www.ciup.fr/ . Les Estudines – http://www.estudines.com/
JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOW LEFT ESSEX
DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE DO NOT WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

Années 3 et 4 - Les formations optionnelles = Les diplômes universitaires à Lyon (DU)
