Food Chain and Food Web Analysis Practice
Refer to figure 1 for questions 1-8
1. Who is the producer?
2. Who is the Tertiary consumer?
Figure 1
3. Who is the primary consumer?
4. Who eats zooplankton?
5. Which animal has the most amount of available energy?
6. Which animal has the least amount of available energy?
7. Why are food chains not a very good representation of the way feeding
relationships actually work in nature?
8. Using the food chain provided, construct an energy pyramid. Assume the first
organism has 100,000units of energy available to it. How many units are available
at each trophic level?

Refer to figure 2 for questions 6-10
9. Who is the producer? How do you know?
10.Name the organisms that ONLY function as primary consumers.
11.Would a decline in the penguin
population affect the elephant
seal population? Explain.
12.How many tropic levels does
the cod function at?
13.What affect would a declining
penguin population have on
leopard seals? Explain.
Figure 2
14.Would a decline in krill have a greater effect on Crabeater seals or Elephant Seals?
Explain.
15.What would be worse for most members of this food web: 1) a major decline in
the leopard seal population or 2) a major decline in the Crabeater seal
population?
16.Use figure 2 to create 4 different food chains. 1 chain should end with the killer
whale as a secondary consumer. 1 chain should end with the killer whale as a
tertiary consumer and one as a quaternary consumer

17.Why are food webs better than food chains at representing feeding relationships
in ecosystems?
Uncle Bob Intro
Uncle Bob takes pride in his roses. Every
day he spends the afternoon weeding and
watering. Unfortunately the bugs love his
roses. To control the pests Uncle Bob went
to the store and bought pesticide X, the
strongest pesticide on the market.
Pesticide X has a chemical that is harmless
to vertebrate animals in small doses, but it
is hazardous in large quantities or
concentrations. He uses the pesticide on
the entire garden to make sure.
Refer to the paragraph and figure 3 for question 18-19
18. Figure 3 is an energy pyramid that represents biomagnification. Why is the
energy pyramid inverted?

19.According to the energy pyramid, which of the organisms is going to be affected
most by the herbicide? Explain why.
20.If the organism dies, what might the secondary effects be on Uncle Bob’s garden?
