Title of design: “True Colours”
Through the tennis outfit I have designed, titled ‘True Colours’, I wanted to embrace Australia’s
natural beauty, whilst conveying the theme of ‘Aussie Team Spirit’. Australia is full of colours which
defines us from other countries. For example, the colours of Uluru at sunset or our native flowers.
To me ‘Aussie Team Spirit’ is much more than cooperating as a sports team and winning the game.
It’s uniting as a country to cheer the sportspeople on, and showing respect to competing countries. I
enjoy tennis because it is a great example of this. My design consists of five pieces of apparel; a shirt,
a skirt with attached bike pants, sports bra, sports jacket and a sun visor, which is the included
accessory in my outfit.
My design conveys ‘Aussie Team Spirit’ through the choices of colour and design ideas. The colour’s
in my design were chosen from Australia’s picturesque sunsets. The simplified Australia shape with
‘AUS’ on it, created by the shirt overlapping the sports bra, clearly shows that this is an Australian
sports uniform, defining it from the other countries. The text on the back of the sports jacket, ‘Team
Australia’, conveys my idea of ‘Aussie Team Spirit’. This is, that all of Australia is a team. Each of
these unique design concepts contributes to the theme of ‘Aussie Team Spirit’ in my tennis garment.
My design consists of three materials; circular knit jersey, merino mesh and M-shell lite. For the
shirt, both colours are a different material. The pink section is merino mesh (100% merino –
180gsm). This material is suitable because it is lightweight and adds extra breathability at the back of
the shirt. The yellow part is circular knit jersey, (100% merino – 165gsm) this material allows easy
movement and is lightweight and comfortable. The innovation I have used for the shirt is Cool Wool.
Cool wool allows for extra breathability, elasticity and temperature regulation and is also UV and
odour resistant. I have also used the merino mesh to construct the whole sports bra. A pink elastic
band runs around the base of the sports bra to provide extra support. Merino mesh is highly suitable
for this piece because it will pick up sweat easily. The moisture management will also assist in this. It
will reduce discomfort due to sweat and make it easier to move. The bike pants which are attached
to the skirt are mad of the same material and use the same innovation. The skirt is made of the same
material as the shirt, 100% circular knit jersey. This piece also uses the same innovation as the shirt,
cool wool. This will make it easier to move and cooler to wear. The jacket is made out of M-shell lite
(65% polyester, 30% merino wool, 5% polyurethane – 280gsm). It holds warmth which is ideal before
playing a game and is comfortable to wear. The fabric has two sides, the shiny side faces outwards.
Mercerised Merino is a suitable innovation for this piece. It comes in brighter shades, has enhanced
comfort and is machine washable. Lastly, my chosen accessory, the sun visor, is entirely made of
pink and yellow merino mesh. The innovation I have used is moisture management, so it can also act
as a sweat band.
Overall, my outfit, inspired by Australia’s beauty, clearly conveys Aussie Team Spirit through
innovative design concepts such as the ‘Australia’ seen on the back. The materials and innovations in
this garment have been carefully chosen to ensure the wearer looks stylish and feels comfortable
whilst in motion. This is the perfect outfit to wear in a sport which brings us all together, and
showcases our true colours.
