WEST BANK DEMOLITIONS AND DISPLACEMENT: AN

WEST BANK DEMOLITIONS AND DISPLACEMENT:
AN OVERVIEW
December 2014
In December, OCHA documented 23 demolition incidents
resulting in the destruction of 38 residential and livelihoodrelated structures in the West Bank, including East
Jerusalem, on the grounds that they lacked Israeli-issued
building permits. A total of 18 persons, half of them
children, were displaced, and approximately 370 were
otherwise affected.
More than 60 per cent of the demolished structures (24)
were located in Area C and the rest in East Jerusalem.
Unlike previous months, only one of the affected
communities in Area C is located in the Jordan Valley
area, and it is the only Bedouin/herding community
registering demolitions this month.
Highlights

Thirty-eight (38) Palestinian structures
demolished in the West Bank, including
East Jerusalem.

Slight decrease in structures demolished in
2014 along with slight increase in displacement.

Five of the demolished structures were
donor-funded.

Demolition orders issued against three
donor-funded structures in Area C.
In East Jerusalem, around half of the structures
demolished were recorded in the neighborhood of Jabal Al
Mukabbir, this month with four residences (none of them inhabited), three livelihood-related structures
and a retaining wall demolished. The remaining were documented in At Tur, Al ‘Isawiya and Shu’fat
refugee camp.
In Area C, the most affected governorates were Hebron (11) and Jerusalem (9). Five of the overall
structures demolished this month in Area C were funded by international donors in Jabal al Baba in the
Jerusalem area and in Al ‘Auja and Al Jiftlik-ash-Shuneh in the Jordan Valley. These included two water
reservoirs (in the Jordan Valley), a residential structure and an animal shelter (both in Jabal al Baba).
Since the beginning of the year, the Israeli authorities demolished, dismantled or seized a total of 143
donor-funded structures/items.
Also in Area C, the Israeli authorities issued this month a demolition order against two donor-funded
structures (an animal shelter and a storage room) in Idhna village (Hebron), affecting 16 people; and
another order against a donated agricultural cistern in Al Khader village (Bethlehem).
This month’s demolitions brings to 601 the total number of Palestinian structures targeted in 2014,
almost a ten per cent decrease compared to previous year (663 in 2013), but up by ten percent in terms
of the number of people displaced (1,215 vs. 1,103). About 82 per cent of the affected structures (493)
were located in Area C, half of which were located in the Jordan Valley area, 16 percent in East
Jerusalem (98), and two per cent (ten structures) were located in areas A and B.
