Make sure you line up the right tools for barra
By STEWIE MARTIN
FINESSE Barra Fishing, Part 2
ONE of the most critical areas
to success in light tackle barra
and estuary fishing is choosing
the correct line for the task.
Most people tend to use a
leader that’s way too heavy for
the job at hand.
I generally use 20lb fluorocarbon leader, but will go down
to 16lb or even 12lb if the fishing is really tough.
Yes, you do lose the occasional fish, but it’s better to
have hooked and lost than
never to have hooked at all!
Fluorocarbon is highly abrasion resistant, and doesn’t go
soft in use like most monofilaments usually do.
Asari is a great brand to use
and cost effective, too – use
around a rod length of leader
for most situations.
Braid is equally important,
and 8lb or 10lb are the best
breaking strains to use.
Most braids break well over
their stated breaking strain so
go lighter rather than heavier.
Suffix 832 is an excellent 8weave braid that casts exceptionally well, as is Power Pro
Super 8 Slick.
Learn how to tie an FG knot
to join leader and main line –
this 100 per cent knot will
allow you to fish these lighter
lines to the limit.
