Trip Tips for the Household Hazardous
Waste/Electronic Waste Depots
1.
2.
Household Hazardous & Electronic
Waste Depots run on specific dates
from April to October, 8:30 am to
2:00 pm. Check your calendar for
dates and locations.
Pack and bring your hazardous waste
items in boxes or containers and keep
like items together (i.e. put all aerosols
in one box, paint cans in another box,
cleaning products in another box, etc.)
3.
If bringing batteries, please sort the
rechargeable from the non-rechargeable.
4.
Be sure that all liquid wastes (i.e. cleaners,
oil, etc.) and powdered wastes (i.e. rose
dust, lime, etc.) are in separate sealed
containers.
5.
If you are bringing needles, please make
sure they are in a sealed container
(i.e. 2 litre pop bottle).
6.
We do not accept empty containers.
Please recycle empty aerosols, empty
paint cans and other empty containers
with your curbside recycling.
7.
We do not accept hazardous waste or
electronic waste from
commercial/industrial/businesses.
The depots are for residential household
hazardous and electronic waste only.
8.
For safety reasons, we do not empty
gasoline into large drums, therefore, if
you bring a container of gasoline to the
depot it will not be returned to you.
9.
We do not accept hazardous waste in
pails larger than 5 gallons and we do not
accept waste in drums.
10. Please remove florescent light ballasts
from their metal containment before
bringing them to the depot.
How to ‘Bag Your Bags’
All clean plastic bags and plastic film should be placed loose into a clear
or clear-blue transparent bag. This allows the collectors at the curb and the
sorters at the Recycling Plant to identify the contents of the bag easily.
Easy Tips for Bagging Your Bags!
‡ Do not put plastic bags/plastic film items in with your cans, bottles or papers;
‡ Use a clear or clear-blue transparent bag to hold your plastic bags/plastic
film items;
‡ Tie your Bag of Bags to the handle of your heavier bags to prevent it from
blowing away on windy days.
What Can I Put into My ‘Bag of Bags’? Examples Include:
‡
‡
‡
‡
‡
‡
Grocery bags
Dry cleaning plastic bags
Sandwich bags
Bubble wrap
Diaper bag packaging
Rinsed milk bags
‡ Overwrap packaging
from paper towel/
facial tissue/toilet paper
packaging
‡ Bread bags
‡ Frozen food bags
The Top 5 Recycling Offenders
1. Plastic bags and plastic film: Please put all plastic bags and plastic
film loosely into one clear or clear blue plastic bag at the curb. Remove
the plastic bag that your newspaper was delivered in and separate the
plastic film from cardboard water or pop bottle cases. Items that are not
separated into their own clear bag become a contaminant in our recycling
sorting process.
2. Paper towels, facial tissues, paper napkins: These items are not
recyclable and belong in the garbage, or in your backyard composter.
3. Food waste: belong in the garbage or in your backyard composter.
Composters are available for purchase at Northumberland County’s
Headquarters building. Please rinse your empty cans and containers
before placing into recycling.
4. Styrofoam plates, meat trays, cups, and packaging (all colours):
are not accepted for recycling and should be disposed of in your
household garbage bag.
5. Broken glass and nails: place sharp objects in a puncture safe container
(sealable box) or protective wrap, and put them in the garbage.

Timber harvests of planted trees from Northumberland County Forest started in the 1940s. Harvests continue today in an effort to return the pine plantations to more natural
mixed forests. The Forest is also a popular destination for recreational activities like hiking, biking, ATVing and cross country skiing. 2

Before you toss that newspaper in the recycling,
make sure to remove the plastic sleeve it was
delivered to you in. Why?
To ensure that both the

sleeve will be recycled,
place the newspaper in
your mixed recycling bag
or blue box and the plastic
sleeve in your separate
“Bag of Bags”.

In 1845, timber slides were built at Ranney Falls to help lumbermen float logs down the Trent river to Trenton. After 1906 timber was shipped via the canal and railways and
the slides were no longer used. By 1908, the Falls were used to produce hydro-electricity for the Northumberland Power and Electric Company. 3

Built in 1853, a railroad transported passengers and supplies from Cobourg, over Rice Lake and into Peterborough. The bridge from Harwood to Hiawatha was frequently
damaged by ice jams and ultimately destroyed in 1862. It was never replaced but trips between Cobourg and Harwood continued until the 1890s. 4

Port Hope is the oldest settlement in Northumberland. In the 17th century, a First Nations Village called Ganaraské was located at the Town’s current site. By the 1790s, the Village
was settled by United Empire Loyalists and called Smith’s Creek and Toronto before being named Port Hope in 1817. 5

The Northumberland County Forest area was cleared by farmers in the 1800s but sandy soil and erosion made farming difficult. In 1910, the United Counties of Northumberland
and Durham asked the Province for funding to reforest nearly 15,000 acres. They were successful and thousands of trees were planted in the 1920s. 10

Did You Know? In 2012, the MRF
recycled the following:
DNearly 7705 tonnes of newspaper and mixed
paper. Recycling 1 tonne of paper saves
17 trees, 26,320 litres of water, and 4,077
kilowatt-hours of energy.
DOver 211 tonnes of aluminum cans. Recycling
one aluminum can saves enough energy to
run a TV for 3 hours. By recycling 1 tonne of
aluminum, we save 13 tonnes of carbon dioxide
from being released into the air.
DOver 600 tonnes of steel cans and scrap
steel. Recycling one pound of steel saves
enough energy to power a 60-watt bulb
more than 26 hours. Every tonne of steel
cans recycled saves 1.36 tonnes of iron ore
and 3.6 barrels of oil.
DOver 55 tonnes of plastic bags. Plastic takes
about 400 years to break down in a landfill.
D Over 1851 tonnes of cardboard. Rainforests
are being cut down at the rate of 100 acres
per minute.
DNearly 1120 tonnes of plastic containers.
Recycling 1 tonne of plastic saves enough
energy to run a refrigerator for a month.
25 recycled PET bottles can be used to make
one adult fleece jacket.
DOver 1292 tonnes of glass. The energy saved
from recycling one glass bottle can run a

8:30-2:00
Residents and commercial haulers are reminded to
ensure that loads being brought to Northumberland
County Waste Management Facilities (landfills and
transfer stations) are properly tarped. Untarped loads
are illegal, a main source of roadside litter, and
create a safety hazard to other drivers. Please help
reduce needless clean-up costs and tarp every load.

Rice Lake has been a popular tourist destination for outdoor enthusiasts since the 19th century. W.W. Kennedy, owner of Bewdley’s Kennedy Hotel and a local Fishing Guide from
about 1920 to 1950, helped many tourists catch Rice Lake Muskies like the one he is holding in this 1920s postcard. 11

What Are We To Do With Our “Light Bulbs”
Fluorescent light bulbs are a popular choice for
consumers because of their energy saving benefits;
however they contain a small amount of mercury
and therefore should NEVER be put in your garbage
or recycling bags. We accept fluorescent, halogen,
and UV light bulbs and tubes at the
Northumberland County HHW Depots.
Tape your long light tubes together in
bundles if you have more than one –
this avoids any potential for breakage.
Regular light bulbs and Christmas lights
must go into your household garbage.

How to ‘Bag Your Bags’
All clean plastic bags and plastic film
should be placed loose into a clear or clear-blue
transparent bag. This allows the collectors at the
curb and the sorters at the Recycling Plant to
identify the contents of the bag easily.
Easy Tips for Bagging Your Bags!
‡
‡
‡
Do not put plastic bags/plastic film items in
with your cans, bottles or papers;
Use a clear or clear-blue transparent bag to
hold your plastic bags/plastic film items;
Tie your Bag of Bags to the handle of your
heavier bags to prevent it from blowing
away on windy days.

Alpine Resort/Rice Lake – Jodi De Jong
Catherine Parr Traill, the famous English-Canadian author who lived near Rice Lake during the 1850s, was inspired by the local countryside. The landscape and its residents
influenced many of her literary works, including Canadian Crusoes: A Tale of the Rice Lake Plains, written in 1852. 13
