West Wind Announcements April 2017 Tour and Activity Plan Terminated by National 04/01/2017 If you log on to My.Scouting.org you will see the following message: “The Tour and Activity Plan has been terminated.“ I know there are cheers coming from the folks that have diligently tried to dutifully submit Tour Plans for their units and have been frustrated in so many ways. It is a pain that many won’t miss. However, it also doesn’t mean that we stop planning and having the proper coverage for our unit trips going forward. Continue to have safe trips and outings with your units! District Dinner – May 18 – REGISTER BY MAY 11th This year’s District Dinner will be at the Village Inn, 544 Broadway Rd, Dracut, MA on Thursday May 18 at 6pm. Tickets are on sale on the Council web site. The District Dinner is a great time for fellowship, volunteer adult recognition and the District Dinner committee has promised us a surprise guest speaker. Please look at the adults in your unit and identify ways you can recognize them, then bring them to the District Dinner and celebrate with those in your unit those who are being recognized. In addition to the many awards that are detailed under the Advancement section near the end of these announcements remember the Adult Religious and Commissioner Awards. Units will also be awarded their Journey to Excellence Ribbons at the dinner. To Register see: ttp://scoutspirit.doubleknot.com/registration/calendardetail.aspx?ActivityKey=2078462&OrgKey=3304 Friends of Scouting Campaign Season The West Wind district has successfully completed 34 unit presentations so far, and have had great results from the Scouting families we have visited. With 5 more presentations scheduled, we will be at 62% of our units having a presentation. Unfortunately, this puts us short of our goal, but there is still time to get a presentation scheduled if your unit hasn't had one and help our district get over the top. We also have an alternative to a live presentation if your unit doesn't have an opportunity for one. Let me know if you are interested in exploring the options. Thank you all for your efforts to deliver a strong Scouting program in our district, without you we could not get this done. Skills most closely concentrated on are camping, cooking, hiking, nature study, pioneering, orienteering, and wilderness survival. This course closely parallels the first scout camp conducted by Lord Baden Powell in 1907. This program places special emphasis on Scout skills, teaching and practice; the purposes of Scouting; and the role of the patrol method within the troop program. It is not done by classroom lecture, but rather by games of skill, leadership exercise, and patrol competition. One course will be offered by the Spirit of Adventure Council at TL Storer Scout Reservation (Wild Goose), Barnstead, NH. Sunday July 2 (12:00 Noon) through Saturday July 8, (10:00 am) (Course Scoutmaster Ken Reardon, [email protected]). National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) for Troop & Crew youth leadership (Spirit of Adventure Council) It is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members (13 – 20 year old) with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops/crews and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting. NYLT integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skill and confidence to lead well. Through a wide range of activities, games, and adventures, participants will work and play together as they put into action the best Scouting has to offer. Two courses of NYLT will be offered by the Spirit of Adventure Council at TL Storer Scout Reservation (Wild Goose), Barnstead, NH.
