IN SUMMARY …
Spring Cereals:
Seed Tech Barley Varieties – Strongest Straw Varieties on the RL
important from a Risk management perspective.
Spring Beans:
Benefit in rotation improve profitability.
Certified Irish Quality Seed – Stem Nematode free
Spring Oil Seed Rape:
Crop if planned and sowed correctly can do very well and be

1100 shoots/m2
Grain number/m2 accounted for most of the variation in
yield and ear number/ m2 accounted for most of the
variation in grain number/m2
– Kennedy et al., 2017
Aim for high shoot numbers of
adequate size and weight at gs 30

Soil Suitability
• Medium to heavy soils are most suitable –
moisture in stem extension VIP
• A pH of 6.5 to 7 is ideal. Beans will not yield in
acid conditions.
• Apply P & K to soil samples – big effect of P index
on yield (Teagasc & PGRO research). Aim for
index 3 P – not practical so place P and lime.
• Watch - Magnesium, Zinc, and Manganese &
Sulphur

Seeding Rate
• Bean seeding rate trials are very variable
however…
• The optimum plant density for beans is 25 to 35
plants/m2.
• Aim for 30 to 35 plants/m2 (wind shear)
Target Plant Population X
TGW
Estimated plant establishment %
seed rate in kg/ha
Planting Beans
• Bird attack is a big threat
• Plant to a depth of 100-125 cm (4-5”)
• Less coulters or direct drills (Claydon)
• Direct drills – watch lime and P and stubble
on top of ground can reduce herbicides
Establishment
Min-Till
Plough
Ensure a level, fine seedbed to aid residual herbicides efficacy
Crows
The biggest risk to early drilling is damage from crows
Stem Nematode
• Seed-borne (desiccated) or carried by
infested soil
• Soil-borne for up to 10 years
• Species studied in UK, not in Irl so oats ?
• All Seedtech seed is DAFM certified as
Stem Nematode free
Stem
Nematode
• Seed
• Avoid close
rotations
• Avoid infested
fields for 10 years
Bean Weevil
• U-shaped notch
• Always near ditch
• Treat if damage is
• Across all field
• Repeat 3 weeks later
• ‘Normal aphid
spray’
• Check labels + rate
• Pyrethroid
• ‘Bee safety’
Stem Weevil Damage
Pheromone Traps … #CatchTheWeevil
Campaign to highlight the need to monitor disease.
Weekly update on 5 pheromone traps, available on
www.seedtech.ie and Twitter @seedtechnology.
Running from beginning of March – Mid Apr. We’re currently
searching for a farmer to participate on Twitter.

Stem Ascochyta
• Always seen in
volunteers so
remove!
• Seed borne so use
certified seed
• All Seedtech beans
are DAFM certified
free from Ascochyta
• Chemical control is
variable

Spring OSR Field Selection
1.
Clean virgin land that has never had OSR previously
2.
If it has had OSR previously, must be 12 years since last grown in the
field
3.
Lea ground or continuous cereal ground
4.
Free of Volunteer Rape, Charlock, Wild Mustard, Wild turnip and
Wild Radish.
5.
No Wild Oats
6.
No potatoes, beet or root crops for 5 years previously
7.
An isolation distance of 1km from all winter & spring OSR crops
SOSR Seed Summary
1. Minimum field size of 20 acres required
2. Conscientious growers with an attention to detail
3. No experience growing OSR necessary

How is it Sown in the Field
Individual male and female lines, sown with a beet seeder
Responsibilities
• Agronomy – Seedtech staff walk crops on a weekly basis offering advice on the
unique aspects of the seed crops. Otherwise it is general agronomy.
• Drilling – Seedtech have a beet sower used to sow all OSR crops at a cost of
€25/acre
• Rogueing – Seedtech organise and carry out all rogueing of the OSR at our cost.
All crops are rogued twice.
• Synchronization – The trimming of the male plant to ensure sufficient throughout
the season. Seedtech pay this cost of €20/acre
Responsibilities
• Mulching – Grower is responsible for this cost of €20/acre. As there is male and
female in the field typically one third is male and this cost applies to that area.
• Haulage – Seedtech pay the grower a subsidy on 50% of the haulage on a pro
rata basis subject to tonnage delivered.
• Bees – Seedtech organise for beehives to be placed in fields at no charge to
the grower aiding pollination
• Other – All other aspects the grower is responsible for.
Benefits to the Grower
• Excellent break crop for land
• Possible entry for a seed cereal crop for autumn 2017
• Additional on farm income from seed crops in a tight margin industry
Potential Issues for the Grower
• Pollination largely dependent on weather conditions – light gentle
breeze aids good pollination affecting yield
• Fields need to be free of weeds as this is a seed crop that DAFM need
to certify
Thank you!

Hybrid Nitrogen Advice
• Mid to End Feb - GS 25-30
Apply 20 to 30% of total nitrogen at or before gs 30
Hybrids have a high nitrogen demand in early
season
Delaying nitrogen increases tiller retention, increases
the no. of small ears and reduces KPH
• End March - GS 30-32
Apply remainder of planned nitrogen, adjusting
rates depending on crop development, no later
than the middle of March.
Thank You!
