A big thank you goes to Mr. Goodrich and our Student Council for organizing the food drive and to Mary Ellen Glynn for keeping everyone informed and up to date on all the important food facts. A special thank you to some individuals that really dug deep to support this effort. The subject of this month’s PTA meeting is our New Math Curriculum. Please plan to attend to hear our teachers present the new material and answer questions you might have about the activities, rigor, and assessments. I have enjoyed the opportunity to visit classrooms during both Number Corner (calendar time) as well as math instruction, work places, and assessments. Ch, Ch, Ch……Chili……….Thank you to all who came out to enjoy our Annual SKG Chili Cook-Off. What a great family night. Thank you to Pat Gonzales and Lia Mills for coordinating this terrific event. The Abernethy Site Council encourages you to fill out a survey. This helps us prioritize school programs as we head down the road of budgeting during tough economic times. Surveys will also be available during the PTA meeting on Thursday evening. The month of March signals the beginning of a new season. This is a perfect time to stop and take a break. Abernethy School Kitchen Garden A note from Sarah Sullivan, the Garden Program Coordinator: A HUGE thank you to Lia Mills and Pat Gonzales for organizing another fantastic chili cook-off this year! Thanks to all who made chili, for garden-teacher-Tom for making all the cornbread and salad dressings with students, and Chef Nicole for putting in a 13 hour day to staff the kitchen and serve up salad from the cafeteria. We exceeded our fundraising goals by far and raised enough to replace the broken irrigation system in the garden! Hoorah! Plant and Seed Sale! For the first time we are selling seeds to benefit the garden program. Botanical Interests is generously offering 40% back on profits for seed collections sold through Abernethy. The beautiful seed packets make excellent gifts! Please pick up your order form in the hallway at school downstairs (glass case across from cafeteria.) Get your forms this week because we are placing orders this Friday March 16th and April 6th! See the attached for details on the plant sale. Cont’d on Page 3 Did you know that the 2nd biggest moneymaker at the annual Abernethy Auction is the Buy-In Party category? Now is your chance to get in on the fun and consider creating and hosting a Buy-in Party. A Buy-In party is hosted by an individual or group and can involve an experience (cooking class, wine tasting, guided walking tour), or a theme party (Kentucky Derby Party, croquet party, progressive punch party) where 15 or more people purchase a spot at the party. If you have an idea for a Buy-In Party and/or would like to host, please email a description of your party by March 23rd to: Michelle Dominico [email protected] and Amy Newton Ernst [email protected] P.S.- If you’d like to host an experience or event but want to accommodate a group of less than 15, please let us know and we'll work with you to make your vision a reality. A group has formed to explore options and brainstorm possibilities including Abernethy-parent architects, carpenters, garden-fans and visionaries! Our first meeting will be this Tuesday, 8:50am-9:20am to walk around the schoolyard and discuss ideas. Please email garden coordinator Sarah if you’d like to join us Tuesday, or be on the email list for more information. [email protected]. GREEN THUMBS OF THE MONTH! Kick-off Assembly - Wednesday, March 14 (pledge forms come home with students) Run Date Tuesday, April 10 Rain Date – Thursday, April 12 How to support your child in the Run For The Arts: • Familiarize yourself with the pledge form and the attached letter. • Ensure that the front of the pledge sheet is filled out completely. • Pledge forms must be signed by a parent/guardian in order for child to participate. • Keep the pledge forms in a safe place. • Child's t-shirt size should be circled on the bottom of the pledge form. • Checks are to be made out to Run For The Arts, NOT Abernethy. • Help your child think of people who would like to support our cause. The neighbor next door, the grand-parent across the country, and everyone in between are welcome to sponsor. Sponsors can elect to pledge a fixed amount per lap, or a flat rate of their choosing. The minimum donation is 25 cents per lap, but the sky's the limit. Funds will be collected in the weeks after the run. • Spare pledge forms and forms in Spanish are in the cubbies in the hall by the Abernethy office. Other Useful Stuff To Know: • Students must earn 30 points in order to qualify for a t-shirt. Otherwise, t-shirts can be purchased for $7.50. Write checks to Run For The Arts, and indicate that it is for a tshirt in the memo line of the check. • Adults can also participate in the run. • Volunteers needed: everything from water-cup-fillers to fund counters in needed. Opportunities to help are available the day of the run, and a day TBA, following the final deadline for collection of funds. Contact: Julia Tomes [email protected] or Rima Chamie [email protected] . The proceeds from Run For The Arts pays for the majority of visual and performing arts programming that we otherwise would not be able to provide. Arts programming, everything from working with artists-in-residence to music performances, strengthens and enriches our children's education. In order to provide the best programming possible, our goal this year is $20,000. Let's keep it going!!
