Uniform Policy - St Peter`s Roman Catholic Primary School

St Peter’s RC Primary School Uniform Policy
School Uniform Policy – September 2016
Jewellery
On health and safety grounds we do not allow children to wear jewellery in our
school. The exceptions to this rule are plain, smooth, metal (gold or silver) earring studs in pierced ears, and small objects of religious significance, such as a
crucifix on a chain. We ask the children to either remove these objects during
PE and games, or cover them with a plaster, to prevent them from causing
injury. For swimming lessons the children will be expected to remove earrings
completely as plasters are prohibited at the swimming baths. Watches are
allowed but they need to be small and not make beeping sounds which may
distract from learning – they also will need to be removed for PE lessons. Nail
varnish is also not permitted.
Extreme haircuts
The school does not permit children to have ‘extreme’ fashion haircuts/colours
that could serve as a distraction to other children. Boy’s hair should be neat and
tidy. Girls with longer hair must have their hair tied back, any girls arriving at
school with their hair down will be given a band by their teacher and
requested/helped to tie their hair up. There should be no extravagant hair
adornments.
Footwear
The school wants all children to grow into healthy adults. We believe that it is
dangerous for children to wear shoes that have platform soles or high heels, so
we do not allow children to wear such shoes in our school. Neither do we allow
children to wear trainers to school; this is because we think that this footwear is
appropriate for sport or for leisurewear, and is not in keeping with the smart
appearance of a school uniform. We require all children to wear shoes as stated
in the uniform list. Boots are not permitted as they often have metal adornments
on which can be deemed unsafe or too much of a fashion statement.
Outdoor Learning
At St Peter’s we strive to use our stunning outdoor environment to enhance
learning. There will be times when you are asked to send clothing in with your
child so that they can use the woodland area. This can include waterproofs,
wellies, warm layers and hat/scarf/gloves. We encourage parents to send
clothes which are inexpensive as inevitably they will become muddy and school
does not have the facilities to wash clothing.
Bags
Children from Reception to Year 5 must use a school book bag to store their
home reading book, home-school diary, homework, library books and
communications between home and school. These are available at the school
office. There is not sufficient storage within school for children to have any other
type of bag. The only exception to this is for Year 6 children who are allowed to
use a bag of their choice as long as it is not larger than the size of a standard
school book bag.
St Peter’s RC Primary School Uniform Policy
Packed lunches should be contained within a traditional lunch box/lunch bag in
order to fit on the lunch trolleys.
The role of parents
We ask all parents who send their children to our school to support the school
uniform policy through signing the annual home/school agreement. We believe
that parents have a duty to send their children to school correctly dressed and
ready for their daily schoolwork. One of the responsibilities of parents is to
ensure that their child has the correct uniform, and that it is clean and in good
repair. Parents are expected to ensure that all items of school uniform and PE
kit are clearly labelled with their child’s name. Whilst we strive to ensure all
items of clothing are looked after, we cannot take responsibility for any lost
items. Children are expected to look after their own items of clothing and this is
actively encouraged by all staff to develop independence, please support this at
home.
