4 Grade: The students will be able to perform whole-numbers operations, multiply fractions, and write fractions in decimal notation.
6th Grade: The students will be able to evaluate expression including decimals and exponents and fluently complete operations with both whole-numbers and
decimals.
Learning Goal
Essential Question
Students will be able to estimate decimal sums and differences, as well as add and How can sums and differences of decimals be estimated?
subtract decimals through the use of various strategies.
What are the standard procedures for adding and subtracting decimals?
Topic 2 Scale
How can sums and differences be found mentally?
Deconstructed Standards
MAFS.5.NBT.1.4 (DOK 1) Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place. [Conceptual Understanding]
• Use knowledge of base ten and place value to round decimals to any place.
*Focus on addition and subtraction in this unit for standard below
MAFS.5.NBT.2.7 (DOK 2) Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value,
properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
[Conceptual Understanding]
• Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of
operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. (multiplication and division will be addressed in Topic 4 and Topic 6)
• Relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used to solve decimal operation calculations.

Suggested Learning Progression
The following learning progression provides students with an opportunity
to construct meaning and create connections through the CRA Method:
Concrete – Representational – Abstract.
*Collaborative teams should be selective in choosing standards-aligned
tasks for instruction and assessment. Teams may adjust the sequence and
use additional resources based on the needs of their students.

Sample Thinking Map: Strategies to Add and Subtract Decimals
Teachers may use this map for professional development or as a teaching
tool. Teachers may build this map with their students as they learn the
strategies throughout the topic. Teachers should be selective in choosing
strategies that they feel will benefit their students’ understanding of the
standard.

*Higher order questions should be utilized to foster a deep, conceptual
understanding of the topic. Encouraging students to express their mathematical
thinking in writing helps them solidify their learning.
