Mission Statement of St. Anthony Church
We are a Catholic community of faith in the Jesuit tradition gathered around Jesus Christ and centered in the
Eucharist. In a diverse and changing world we struggle to grow in our relationship with God and with one another.
Through our worship, our ministries and our promotion of peace and justice, we walk with Jesus of the Gospel who
reveals God’s love for all.
Dear Parishioners:
As many of you already know, Bishop Barres has approved the Jesuit Provincial’s request to appoint me
administrator of St Anthony’s Church for one year beginning on June 1, 2017. He has also approved the
Provincial’s sending three additional Jesuits to assist
me in the parish. They are Fr Dan O’Brien and Fr Jim
Donovan whom you already know and, in addition Fr
Richard Nichols who was just ordained on June 10 at
Fordham University. Fr Nichols will just be with us for
one year.
Please know that I am happy to remain here serving
you and am grateful to the Provincial for providing us
with so much support.
Sincerely in the Lord,
Fr Gannon
Mass Schedule
Due to the disruption of the Mass schedule this past year,
Fr. Gannon has decided to keep the regular schedule in
effect for the summer.
Last Sunday many parishioners enjoyed a beautiful
farewell Mass and reception for Father Nick.
A lot of love and gratitude were shown for our Pastor,
Father Nicholas Lombardi, SJ! We appreciate all you
have done for us and our parish and we appreciate the
wonderful person you are! We will miss you!
Special thanks to Marie Orzano, Carol Hayes,
Rose Ross, Olga Dunning, and Rose Dillon and her
crew for providing such a beautiful reception!

How God Loves:
Scott Hahn Reflects on Trinity Sunday
We often begin Mass with
the prayer from today's
Epistle: "The grace of the
Lord Jesus Christ, and the
love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit
be with all of you." We
praise the God who has
revealed himself as a Trinity, a communion of persons.
Communion with the Trinity is the goal of our worship—and the purpose of
the salvation history that begins in the Bible and
continues in the Eucharist and sacraments of the
Church.
We see the beginnings of God's self-revelation in
today's First Reading, as He passes before Moses and cries out His holy name.
Israel had sinned in worshipping the golden calf
(see Exodus 32). But God does not condemn
them to perish. Instead He proclaims His mercy
and faithfulness to His covenant.
God loved Israel as His firstborn son among the
nations (see Exodus 4:22). Through Israel—heirs
of His covenant with Abraham—God planned to
reveal himself as the Father of all nations
(see Genesis 22:18).
The memory of God's covenant testing of Abraham—and Abraham's faithful obedience—lies
behind today's Gospel.
In commanding Abraham to offer his only beloved
son (see Genesis 22:2,12,16), God was preparing us for the fullest possible revelation of His
love for the world.
As Abraham was willing to offer Isaac, God did
not spare His own Son but handed Him over for
us all (see Romans 8:32).
In this, He revealed what was only disclosed partially to Moses—that His kindness continues for a
thousand generations, that He forgives our sin,
and takes us back as His very own people
(see Deuteronomy 4:20; 9:29).
Jesus humbled himself to die in obedience to
God's will. And for this, the Spirit of God raised
Him from the dead (see Romans 8:11), and gave
Him a name above every name (see Philippians
2:8-10).

Welcome, Father Rich!
Fr. Richard H. Nichols, SJ, 40, grew up in Baltimore, first meeting the Jesuits
as a seventh-grade student at Loyola Blakefield in Towson, Md., and again
studying with them at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1998, Fr. Nichols spent
six and a half years in the Navy, mostly on nuclear submarine duty in the
north Pacific Ocean. During this time, he was making monastic retreats and
bringing spiritual reading on the sub with him. He was assigned to Northern
Virginia in the last few years of his service, where he met a few priests from
the Archdiocese of Washington. They inspired Fr. Nichols to enter the seminary, although he wasn’t yet sure if he wanted to become a diocesan priest or
join a religious order. He continued his discernment process for three and a
half years, until making a 30-day Spiritual Exercises retreat at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb. He entered the Society of Jesus in 2008.
As a novice, he taught chemistry and religion at Cheverus High School in Portland, Maine, before being missioned to Saint Louis University, where he earned a master’s degree in philosophy in 2012. At Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., Fr. Nichols taught math and served as the chaplain of several sports
teams.
After ordination, Fr. Nichols will be missioned to St. Anthony’s Church in Oceanside, New York. His first
Mass will be celebrated at the Fordham University Church. (Maryland Province)

ATTENTION PARENTS & GRANDPARENTS
It’s that time of year – Graduation! Our Teens are becoming Young Adults—starting college
with a lifetime of opportunities in front of them. Help your graduates continue their journey of
faith!
We would like to help our teens keep a faith connection while they are in college. Many will
be away from home and out on their own. What better way to help them stay grounded and
give them a safe place to meet new friends than through their university’s Newman Center. Newman Centers
are found on most secular universities throughout the country. These Centers provide pastoral services and
ministries to Catholic students and give them a way of meeting young men and women who want to grow in their
faith.
If you would like to give your son/daughter this opportunity, please take a moment to make that connection and
enroll in the Newman Connection today. It’s simple and easy!
To enroll please e-mail Marianne Sheridan, Director for Youth Ministry, at [email protected] by June 15th with
the following information: Graduate’s first and last name and the name of the college they will be attending in
September 2017. It’s as simple as that! This information will then be forwarded to the proper Newman Center
and your Son/daughter will be welcomed in the fall when they arrive at their school.
Introduction to Martial Arts
We are gauging the interest of an Introduction
to Martial Arts program to be offered here at
St. Anthony’s. It will be an introduction to the
basic foundations of balance, movement, flexibility, and endurance. These skills are especially important for those who feel too out of
shape or too old.
If you are interested or would like more information,
Please call 516-764-2285
or 516-425-9966.

Scripture Reflection
The Gospel today is sometimes called “the Gospel in
miniature” because it so concisely sums up the Gospel
message. In even more condensed form, “God
loved....God gave...,” it is the paradigm for stewardship
- we give because we love.
Living Stewardship
