Instructions: Answer the question below.
1. How was a Patriot different from a Loyalist? Explain
Patriots wanted independence and Loyalists wanted to remain with Britain. The Patriots would appeal to
taxation without representation, the Stamp Act, the Intolerable Acts, the Boston Massacre, and other issues
to stress the need for independence. The Colonies, according the Loyalists, were committing treason by pursuing
independence. They could argue that there was no valid reason that the Colonies, if they were not loyal to Britain,
would then be loyal to a new country, the United States. There were still benefits to remaining loyal to Britain,
including their military protection. They would have also argued that Britain would be a difficult enemy to defeat.
