MASTER LIST: Homeschool Resources and the Common Core Standards This list contains a notation for every homeschool-related entity I have researched. Company and/or product names are shown according to the standard process for alphabetizing (i.e., if a title starts with “A” or “The,” the article is excluded for alphabetizing purposes, and names of individual people are listed by Last Name, First Name). Notations are color-coded, as follows: • • • • responded directly to my queries; make unambiguous statements on their websites; have not yet responded (i.e., are included on the Awaiting a Response list); are suppliers/distributors (not actual curriculum/resource publishers). I strongly recommend carefully reading all notes when considering any of the products. But to summarize my definitions for clarity here: Independent (IND) = These companies have not changed anything in regards to the CCS/NexGen and intend to remain independent of the initiative. They may or may not know of ways in which their materials happen to somehow match some aspects of the CCS/NexGen, but they do not promote any ancillary connections. Correlated (COR) = Each of these companies is correlated to - not aligned with - the CCS/NexGen. Correlated providers did not make content changes in order to become "aligned" and, in many cases, have indicated concerns with the initiative. However, they do note (usually on their websites) where/how their materials - as written - correlate with aspects of the CCS/NexGen. In other words, they "appear to be acknowledging where they [match] the CCS/NexGen, but did not...[actually] change to align." Coincidentally Connected (COIN) = Each of these companies has a coincidental connection to the CCS/NexGen. In most cases, the publishers have indicated a strong commitment to educational independence from the CCS/NexGen initiative. But they offer "package" programs (i.e., instruction in multiple subjects) that incorporate aligned materials from other publishers (in addition to many unaligned resources). Explicitly Aligned (EXP) = These companies have indicated that they have chosen to actively align their materials with the CCS/NexGen. Some have made relatively small changes, and others have completely overhauled their products (or were even initially created based on the initiative). However, in all cases, conscious content changes were made to accommodate the CCS/NexGen. Other Responses (OTH) = Each of these companies either needs more time to formulate an official response, has indicated that it will only share its position with individual parents, is not interested in sharing its view at all, or did not respond after many attempts to elicit a reply. Check the list itself for details about each entity. Awaiting a Response (WAIT) = Each of these companies has been queried, but has not yet sent a reply. Suppliers/Distributors (SUP) = Unless otherwise noted, these companies do not publish any of their own materials or actually produce curriculum and educational products. Instead, they merely sell resources from a wide variety of other outlets, serving as suppliers/distributors. As such, they have not been queried in regard to the CCS/NexGen. And to my knowledge, they all sell a wide variety of materials – whether independent, correlated, coincidentally connected, or explicitly aligned – without regard to any resource's CCS/NexGen status. Accelerated Reader (Renaissance Learning) The Academic Advantage will utilize students' own materials rather than require specific resources in its tutoring services. Thus, students could use the tutoring services without reference to the CCS. However, the program's courses for credit are provided solely by Laurel Springs School, which is explicitly aligned. Additionally, it offers several AP preparation courses. And, though not directly covered by the CCS because they are the equivalent of freshmen-level college courses, it's worth noting that all AP classes must be approved by the College Board and that the College Board is in the process of changing AP courses and tests to “reconcile” AP with the CCS. In order to maintain College Board approval, Academic Advantage's AP tutoring may have to make related changes as well. Academic Success for All Learners has not changed the content of its materials. However, it has researched how/where its program correlates with CCS and will make that information available to parents. 28. Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) IND 29. BereanBuilders Publishing IND BereanBuilders opposes the CCS and currently only publishes material that is unaligned. As this new company adds authors, it will discourage them from writing to anything other than a biblical standard and that of creating “the best...material in the field.” It will not turn away any author with high-quality material even if it's been written to align with the CCS. But it “would insist they at a minimum publish a blog post stating that they did so and what their reason was for doing so.” 164. The company's website clearly states that many of its materials are purposely correlated with "state and national standards" and defends the CCS. However, a company representative has indicated via email that no materials have (yet) been changed solely because of the CCS. Thus, though BJU has created documents to show how its materials correlate with the CCS, and it's clear that the CCS has already been and will continue to be taken into account going forward, it seems that the actual content of BJU materials has not been changed at this time. However, the company has indicated that it will refer to the CCS and may make changes that may specifically align with the CCS if it deems those changes to be in accordance with BJU's educational philosophy. Thus, I highly recommend that potential BJU customers contact the company directly to ask specifically about particular products in which they are interested. 188. Britannica Online COR Brightly Beaming Resources (Letter of the Week) (BBR/LOTW) is a Canada-based program. As such, its creator has no plans to align with the CCS, and everything she has written (and will write going forward) has no intentional connection to the initiative. Additionally, most of the resources pertain to toddlers and preschoolers and/or are largely based on literature and music that have no official connection to the CCS. With school-age materials, BBR/LOTW does suggest a few resources from some entities that have correlated with or aligned to the CCS since the program was created (Explode the Code, Starfall, etc.), but the suggested literature itself has not changed (that is, correlation only occurs in teacher's guides that BBR/LOTW does not include), and BBR/LOTW offers multiple options (i.e., for phonics instruction) so parents wanting to use the BBR/LOTW program can easily avoid the CCS if desired. Brightstorm creates videos based on the content found in textbooks from a variety of mainstream publishers. If the CCS is incorporated into such books, Brightstorm videos may include such content as well. Though the content at Britannica Online does not appear to have been changed to accommodate the CCS, the site clearly shows CCS correlations for every grade level. The non-aligned program will be available for the 2013-14 school year, but may not be offered after that. Catholic Textbook Project is listed as correlated for that reason, and users of Catholic Heritage products should be aware of the existence of correlating documents within Catholic Textbook Project materials. 269. Catholic Icing IND 270. Catholic Schools K12 Virtual (CSK12) EXP CSK12's high school language arts course descriptions all say that, “This course has been especially designed to integrate all aspects of the Language Arts Common Core Standards.” In addition, most of the elementary math courses utilize Go Math!, which is aligned. And the school's “curriculum partners” include a number of aligned resources. 271. Catholic Textbook Project COR Though the Catholic Textbook Project says it will not change the content of its courses in order to align with the CCS, it does provide supporting materials – for those who want or need to know – showing where/how its materials (as written) correlate. 272. Caught'ya Grammar (Maupin House) COR Though many programs offered by Maupin House are explicitly aligned, Caught'ya Grammar is an older program; as such, it has been correlated, not changed to align. 273. ChemAdvantage.com only offers only AP Chemistry, which is not directly covered by the CCS because it is the equivalent of freshmenlevel college courses. However, it's worth noting that all AP courses must be approved by the College Board and that the College Board is in the process of changing AP courses and tests to “reconcile” AP with the CCS. In order to maintain College Board approval, ChemAdvantage.com will have to make related changes as well. The author of Chester Comix will continue his work to show how his materials align to previously-written (content-driven) state social studies standards, adding information for more states over time. He does show correlations with the CCS, but will not change his actual content for the CCS. 299. ChildrenActingBooks IND (Sandcastle Publishing) 300. Christian Liberty Press (CLP) IND CMASAS uses material from many other resource providers, including all the mainstream textbook publishers and Compass Learning (all of whom are aligned with the CCS). It would be possible to individualize a CMASAS course to avoid CCS material, but parents and students would need to work with CMASAS staff to make such accommodations since the default coursework regularly includes aligned material. Materials written directly by Christian Cottage are not aligned, but its full curriculum uses some materials from companies, including Easy Grammar and BJU, that are correlated with the CCS and others, such as Modern Curriculum Press, Evan-Moor, and EPS, that offer many explicitly aligned products. Christian Cottage consults with families to create a custom curriculum program for each student, so parents desiring to refrain from using CCS-related materials could discuss that with the consultants. Materials written directly by Christian Liberty Press (CLP) are completely independent of the CCS. CLP's full curriculum packages – known as CLASS – do use some materials from companies, including BJU, that are correlated with the CCS and others, such as Modern Curriculum Press, that offer many explicitly aligned products. However, almost all of those products have a copyright prior to 2010 when the CCS was adopted and the one text from a company with many aligned books that has a later copyright (a Glencoe woodworking book published in 2011) is not aligned. If CLP eventually updates any books from aligned companies to post-2010 editions, it's possible they may be aligned, but at this point they are not. 312. Christian Light Education (CLE) IND 313. [It is] not involved with any particular curriculum. [It is] not part of the Common Core State Standards effort but [does] applaud the Common Core English Standards for their ability to inject civic and history content." As such, it does not have its own curriculum products. It does recommend several dozen civics programs which have not (yet) been specifically asked about the CCS, so I recommend that those considering materials cited on Civic Mission of Schools personally investigate each program's stance on the CCS until I can devote time to sending that many additional queries. 320. Civil War Trust COR The Civil War Trust has no plans to “create or alter materials specifically to meet the CCS. [It] will continue to advertise the ways [its] materials [correlate] with CCS” for the benefit of teachers required to incorporate the CCS into their lessons. It also shows correlations to the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). 321. Classical Composers Monthly IND Classical Composers Monthly has “not changed or done anything in regards to CCS [and it] has no plans to do so.” Its service gleans from free resources it finds online, so it does use many other resources, but it does not have a set list of vendors. It is possible that some of the linked sites are CCS-aligned, but I currently have no evidence of such alignment. 326. Classical Conversations IND Classical Conversations has a strong opposition to government initiatives such as the CCS. The company does utilize the IEW program, which is correlated to the CCS (see the note about IEW), but since IEW has not changed anything about the actual content of its materials, it is appropriate to name CC as non-aligned. Additionally, the program uses a math resource from Scholastic, but it is just an optional tutor resource, not required in the actual curriculum. And it includes one book from Instructional Fair, but that resource was published in 1999. 327. Classical Copywork IND 328. Classical Historian, The IND 329. Classical House of Learning IND 330. Thus, it's likely that at least some aligned products will be recommended. It would be possible to specifically request only nonaligned options and the school would do the necessary research to make those accommodations, but a parent would have to define that parameter for it to be considered. 342. Core Curriculum of America IND COIN Connections Academy is a Pearson subsidiary; Pearson is a major proponent of the CCS. Additionally, it advertises its alignment with the CCS. Constituting America was contacted multiple times - at least seven (via email and also by phone and through Facebook) over the course of several months - and did not respond to any query. I cannot speculate as to why it has chosen not to reply, and I have no discernible way of knowing its position on the CCS/NexGen. All new materials produced by the Constitutional Rights Foundation will be aligned as they are written. Existing material will be “retrofitted” to align. Based on interviews with students and parents, Core Curriculum of America tailors curriculum packages to meet the needs of individual students. It is possible to acquire completely unaligned packages, as the company offers products from quite a few unaligned publishers. However, the company also utilizes products from many aligned entities (i.e., imprints of Pearson, McGraw-Hill, Harcourt Houghton Mifflin, etc.). Thus, a parent considering this program and wanting only unaligned material will have to specifically request it and will likely have to personally research the alignment status of anything the company suggests before making a final decision. 378. However, those who create the classes “have complete autonomy to design the courses to their own set of educational standards. As such, it is difficult” to make a blanket statement about everything offered on the site. Coursera itself recommends sending a query to the instructor of any Coursera class one is considering in order to have full disclosure about possible CCS connections. 386. It's also worth noting that the company is currently working to create explicitly aligned public school materials (to be called Common Core Based Grammar). 390. Create! Press COR Create! In terms of the program's AP preparation courses, AP classes are not directly covered by the CCS because they are the equivalent of freshmen-level college courses. But it's worth noting that all AP classes must be approved by the College Board and that the College Board is in the process of changing AP courses and tests to “reconcile” AP with the CCS. In order to maintain College Board approval, the AP classes offered by For Such a Time as This will have to make related changes as well. 613. Fortunately for You Books IND 614. Thus, I have chosen to classify the site as aligned for two reasons: 1. It is produced by Pearson, a proponent of the CCS; 2. The FunBrain Standards Finder links to McREL Standards, which are aligned, at least in part, to the CCS. Hakim, Joy COR Joy Hakim is wary of national standardization, and her materials are currently not aligned. She is taking a “wait and see” approach to the standards for her materials’ main subject areas (history and science) so interested parties should check her position going forward after the CCS publishes those standards. Ms. Hakim did express concern about the CCS and resigned from a similarly named entity because she didn’t want to be incorrectly associated with the CCS. HC USA relies heavily on Saylor, which is explicitly aligned with the CCS, and uses a number of other aligned resources as well. HomeschoolingBooks.com has indicated support for educational freedom and does not seek materials it sells based on any connection to CCS. However, it "has selected a few products from publishers who advertise that the materials support the [CCS]. In such cases, these materials were not selected for that reason but because the content fulfilled a specific need in a curriculum track." When in doubt, I suggest interested parties contact HomeschoolingBooks.com directly. HLN has correlated all of its material with the CCS and has also added content where necessary to all areas except math in order to explicitly align with the CCS. Living Books Curriculum IND The teaching guides and other materials written by Living Books Curriculum are not aligned, and the publisher notes that LBC has no interest in aligning any of its program. The curriculum does currently suggest the use of three CCS-correlated Usborne books in the Grade 1 program. However, I noted only that small coincidental connection as I looked through all the LBC recommended materials, and LBC is looking to replace those titles. Additionally, the LBC publishers pointed out that, “None of our books [is] ‘required’ in the sense that the curriculum cannot be accomplished without it. The thing that is required is the method of living books and life experience. Our oft-repeated slogan is, ‘It’s not the books; it’s the method.’” Thus, a parent could easily substitute alternate, non-aligned books for the three Usborne titles. (Jim and Sheila Carroll) 1060. Thus, the Foundations program (for K-2) has been correlated so the materials might be used in public schools, but the actual content of the program has not been changed. Wheatley Portfolio, The EXP The Wheatley Portfolio – under the auspices of its parent company, Common Core Inc. received grant money from the Gates Foundation for the purpose of aligning. (Common Core Inc.) 1840. Wheelock's Latin IND 1841. Who's Counting COR Who's Counting advertises its correlations with the CCS. COR Wiebe-Carlson advertises its products that support the CCS. Williamsburg Academy COR Course content at Williamsburg Academy has not been changed, but the program has been correlated to the CCS because the Academy has partnered with a Nevada charter school that required it of them. 1846. Williamsburg Educational Programs COR In response to my query, I was told that “Colonial Williamsburg is dedicated to teaching accurate high quality history and civics lessons. You are welcome to review our offerings and draw your own conclusions with respect to your questions.” Thus, I did review the WEP offerings and determined that, while it does not appear that the programs have actually been changed to align with the CCS, correlation is clear. 1847. WiloStar3D IND WiloStar3D is aligned to pre-CCS Florida state standards, not the CCS, and has chosen after careful study to remain as such. Though it does primarily recommend Teaching Textbooks (non-aligned) for math, it may suggest other math programs at parent request. Those wanting to avoid the CCS should confirm the CCS status of the recommendations before proceeding. 1848. Wilson Daily Prep EXP 1849. Wilson Fundations EXP Wilson Fundations advertises its alignment with the CCS. 1850. Wonderopolis EXP 1858. Woodbine House SUP 1859. Woodside Learning Center IND COIN Winsor Learning advertises its correlation with the CCS. Wonderopolis advertises its alignment with the CCS. Woodside Learning Center is not interested in making any content changes for the CCS and is, therefore, almost entirely independent of it. However, it has an optional AP track for a history course. And, though AP is not directly covered by the CCS because it is the equivalent of freshmen-level college courses, it's worth noting that all AP classes must be approved by the College Board and that the College Board is in the process of changing AP courses and tests to “reconcile” AP with the CCS. In order to maintain College Board approval, Woodside's AP option may have to make related changes as well. 1860. Woozzle Games OTH Woozzle Games was contacted multiple times at least seven over the course of several months – and did not respond to any query. I cannot speculate as to why it has chosen not to reply, and I have no discernible way of knowing its position on the CCS/NexGen. 1861. Word Central (Merriam-Webster) COIN Because Word Central uses a technique called “reading and marking” - whereby “accumulated evidence...for English as it is used in books, magazines, newspapers, and so on” is collected as the site's editors “read and mark a wide variety of classroom materials, from popular textbooks to a large selection of classic and modern children's literature,” it's probable that it has coincidental connections to the CCS (i.e., through inclusion of CCS key words in the textbooks that are analyzed) especially because all mainstream textbook publishers have aligned. 1862. Write from History (Brookdale House) IND 1887. Write from the Heart IND COIN World Book – for both its print and digital versions – advertises its alignment with the CCS. WORLD Magazine is unaligned. WORLD has entered into a partnership to provide content for Dew Learning, which is explicitly aligned, but it appears that WORLD is simply providing a service to Dew subscribers, not writing any aligned or correlated content itself. Worldview Weekend links extensively to antiCCS information. Write from the Heart offers an AP English course. Though not directly covered by the CCS because it is the equivalent of freshmenlevel college courses, it's worth noting that all AP classes must be approved by the College Board and that the College Board is in the process of changing AP courses and tests to “reconcile” AP with the CCS. In order to maintain College Board approval, the AP class offered by Write for the Heart may have to make related changes as well. It is worth noting, though, that Write from the Heart has always placed parental authority and biblical standards above AP literature suggestions; thus, it's possible that the program's author may also seek ways to work around any CCS-related AP course content changes. And non- AP Write from the Heart material is independent of the initiative. 1888. Write Guide Method, The COR 1889. Write More IND 1890. WriteShop IND 1891. Write Source COR 1892. Write Stuff Adventure IND The Write Guide Method acknowledges that it knows its materials do align, though the company did not change anything to make that happen. It also allows parents to individualize the program, eliminating any lessons they don't deem appropriate, and it doesn't currently advertise how it aligns. But it may do that in the future. Though not built into the text itself, the publisher (Saxon/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) has developed a CCS correlation book for Write Source and advertises it among its “Common Core Writing” resources.
