Whether you’re a surfer, looking for a gentle bay for the kids to splash in, or just
keen to feel the sand between your toes, there’s a beach waiting here just for you.
From gently rolling waves to pounding surf breaks, the variety and splendour
of our beaches make them some of Australia’s best. Surfers travel from
around the world to experience the point break at the Crescent Head
Surfing Reserve and there is plenty of other surfing locations waiting
to be experienced; Hat Head, South West Rocks and Grassy Head.
With hundreds of kilometres of coastline, journeying a little further
from the popular haunts will bring you to wide open sandy beaches
you can have all to yourself.

fisherman’s dream come true.
During peak holiday periods many of our beaches are patrolled

arts, culture
Tucked away in some of our most picturesque locations are galleries
and cultural centres that allow you to experience the art and history
of our original indigenous inhabitants, the Dhungutti people, as well
as exhibitions by other local, national and international artists.
In the middle of the rainforest near Yarrahapinni is the gorgeous little
Yarrahapinni Studio Gallery which displays beautiful hand-made timber
furniture and works by local artists.
Historic Trial Bay Gaol is a must see, providing not only a magnificent
view along the coast but history around the sandstone gaol. Smoky
Cape Lighthouse is just a short drive into Hat Head National Park
and has spectacular views with bushwalking through Arakoon
and Hat Head National Parks and onto the unspoilt beaches below.

while you’re in town, don’t miss the Wigay Cultural Park, a native garden, book a tour to
learn about the uses of these plants. Macleay Valley Community Gallery in the quaint
riverside village of Gladstone has regular exhibitions featuring both local and
internationally acclaimed artists.
Macleay’s newest attraction, the Slim Dusty Centre and Museum,

the hinterland
The mountainous hinterland region is the true surprise – and delight – of the Macleay Valley Coast. Within
minutes of leaving the beach you can find yourself in the heart of the Australian bush with crystal clear
creeks, rocky outcrops, towering eucalypts and the warmth of good old fashioned country hospitality.
One of Australia’s all-time country music greats, Slim Dusty, comes from these parts. Pay a visit to his
homestead, near Bellbrook, where you’ll see for yourself the source of his inspiration.
The Upper Macleay River offers some of Australia’s best bass fishing, while lovers of the great outdoors
also come here to camp, bushwalk, explore the restored timber towns and soak up the natural beauty.

Arakoon National Park
Trial Bay Gaol was opened in 1886 as a Public Works Prison, utilised in World War 1 as a German Internment Camp
and closed in 1918. Located in the Arakoon National Park, just 5km east of South West Rocks, it is one of the most
popular attractions on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Visitors can explore the gaol and museum, watch
whales (in season), picnic or BBQ, go swimming, boating and bushwalking. Tracks vary from an easy 10 minutes
to four hours each way to Smoky Cape Lighthouse. Enjoy camping or caravanning on site, with the camp grounds
providing hot showers and flushing toilets.
National Parks and Wildlife Service runs qualified discovery programs throughout the year and guided tours of the
gaol are run during the day and evening in the New South Wales school holidays (except in winter). Self-guided
tours of the gaol are also available between 9.00am and 4.00pm daily. Only 10 minutes drive away, located in Hat
Head National Park is Smoky Cape Lighthouse, the highest lighthouse in New South Wales. Bookings are essential
for camping all year round and for the guided tours during school holidays.

that is the Yarriabini National Park. A significant place for both the Dunghutti and Gumbaynggirr
nations, Yarriabini means ‘koala rolling’ (but we don’t recommend trying that yourself. It’s a long way

indigenous word.
