Alliance to Save Energy’s PowerSave Schools Program Empowering Students, Generating Change Program Description PowerSave Schools is a comprehensive program for K-12 schools that educates students about energy efficiency, demand response, renewable energy, and green careers, empowering them to take action to reduce energy consumption at their schools. The program goals are to: • Strengthen student learning by integrating energy topics into curriculum, particularly in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), using buildings as learning laboratories to create a deep understanding of energy’s links to the environment and economy. • Engage students as advocates for energy efficiency in their homes and communities. After executing energy-saving activities in their schools, students have the confidence and knowledge to champion energy efficiency in the larger community. • Build pathways to green jobs. Introduce students to careers in energy efficiency and sustainability, exploring potential jobs and career pathways and understanding academic requirements. Students from the Corona-Norco Unified School district participate in a Study Energy Audit Training. This program is a real ‘no brainer’ and is serving as our way of taking energy • Save energy and lower school energy costs through nocost behavior and operational changes, to achieve average annual savings between five and 15 percent. Program Approach • Provides a Road Map to Success: The program provides a Road Map Guide that links lesson plans and activities to support energy education and reducing energy costs at school. conservation to the next level by developing meaningful curriculum that has a real emphasis on energy conservation and alternative energy systems. Jeff Boone Energy Manager Murrieta Valley Unified School District • Uses a Team Approach: Teachers, students, and facilities staff work together to achieve the joint goals of student learning, energy savings, and outreach. • Hands-on Curriculum: PowerSave lesson plans are project-based and aligned to K-12 state and national learning standards. School Energy Audits Recent Events Students identify where energy is wasted or used unnecessarily during peak hours and formulate a plan for immediate energy savings. Energy Hog Assemblies Students learn how to tackle energy hogs on their campus through an interactive assembly! Community Outreach From home energy efficiency surveys to school board presentations, students share their energy knowledge with their community Exploring Green Careers Students explore green careers through field trips, guest speakers and research projects. Participating Schools/Districts 2011-2012 Each year, Southern California Edison (SCE) supports schools to participate in the program for one to two years. Participating schools are selected based on their interest in the program and their location within SCE’s service territory. After the first year in the program, the district selects schools to participate in a second year, and the Alliance selects, through an application process, a few schools that have “graduated” from the program to continue as “mentor” schools Arcadia Unified School District (1st year schools): Baldwin Stocker ES, Camino Grove ES, Highland Oaks ES, Holly Avenue ES, Longley Way ES, Dana MS, First Avenue MS, Foothills MS, Arcadia HS Students from the Newport Mesa Unified School District, test out their energy auditing tools in their PowerSave Toolkit.
