Baseball Facilities/Services Indoor Facilities During Butler’s cold weather practice period (mid-January through mid-February), the Bulldogs go indoors to train in Butler’s 32,000 square foot “bubble” facility. The bubble is also used for winter baseball camps. Butler players also train at The Sportzone, a state-of-the-art indoor facility located on the west side of Indianapolis. The Sportzone features 40,000 square feet of artificial turf with multiple batting cages, pitching mounds, basketball courts and weight rooms. The Bulldogs also have off-season access to the batting cages at Victory Field. “We are fortunate in Indianapolis to have warmer weather than most Midwest baseball programs,” head coach Steve Farley said. “If we do get a cold spell, it’s nice to know that we have great facilities to use.” Strength & Conditioning All of Butler’s athletes benefit from an extensive strength and conditioning program under the direction of a full-time strength and conditioning coordinator. The purpose of Butler’s program is to decrease injury potential, while increasing performance potential. The strength and conditioning program stresses flexibility, agility, jumping skills, speed and reaction time, as well as strength. The program utilizes free weights, strength machinery, manual resistance and additional innovative techniques to help maximize the chance for Butler athletes to succeed. The center of Butler’s strength and conditioning program is the 4,000 squarefoot weight training room located in Hinkle Fieldhouse. The weight room, which features an entire outside wall of glass, is stocked with free weights, weight machines, stationary bikes and stairmasters. Butler’s Indoor “Bubble Facility” Sports Medicine Butler student-athletes have access to a comprehensive sports medicine program that concentrates on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athleticrelated injuries. Under the supervision of Butler’s director of sports medicine Bruce Willard, Butler athletes are served by an extensive team of physicians, health care professionals and certified athletic trainers. Butler’s expanded training room is located on the west end of Hinkle Fieldhouse. Renovation in the summer of 1998 effectively tripled the usable area devoted to the care and welfare of Butler’s student-athletes. Butler’s athletic staff provides care for Butler athletes at practices and games. The staff also works to educate Butler student-athletes in the areas of injury prevention, nutrition and various wellness issues. Butler’s sports medicine program utilizes the extensive medical community in Indianapolis, which boasts one of the largest and most knowledgeable groups of sports medicine professionals in the nation. Butler student-athletes have access in Indianapolis to world-renowned medical facilities, as well as many of the leading physicians in the world of sports medicine. The Sportzone Butler’s 4000-square-foot Weight Training Room Academic Support/Student Development Perhaps the biggest challenge facing student-athletes at Butler is trying to balance the demands of NCAA Division I athletics with the responsibilities of a rigorous academic schedule. To help the student-athletes meet that challenge, Butler provides a dedicated academic support system. The Athletic Academic Support Offices are located in Hinkle Fieldhouse, where the staff is available to assist student-athletes in solving academic and nonacademic problems. Butler offers its more than 300 student-athletes academic and career counseling, guidance in study skills and time management, and academic tutoring. The academic staff monitors each student-athlete’s progress toward Butler’s degree requirements. Support services for student-athletes are provided on a by-need or by-student/ coach request basis. Butler has led its conference in number of student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll in eight of the past nine years. The baseball squad consistently has one of the highest cumulative GPA’s of all Butler men’s teams. Many of the renovations seen a Bulldog Park in recent years were funded through the Bulldog Club’s generous support. An investment in Butler baseball improves and strengthens the experiences of current baseball student-athletes, while players, coaches and fans continue to build a program committed to being the best it can be, on and off the field. McCafferty Trophy is presented annually to the Horizon League’s All-Sports champion. A symbol of a successful broad-based athletic program, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded to the league member compiling the greatest number of performance points in league championships. Schools earn performance points based on their finish in all 18 championship sports offered by the Horizon League. For the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball, points are awarded based on combined regular season and championship finish. In all other sports, points are based on finish in the championship. Nineteen of Butler’s 21 intercollegiate teams compete in the Horizon League, along with Cleveland State, Detroit, UIC, Loyola, UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee, Wright State and Youngstown State. The football team is a member of the Pioneer Football League, which includes Dayton, Drake, San Diego, Valparaiso, Austin Peay, Davidson, Morehead State and Jacksonville, while the men’s lacrosse team competes in the Great Western Lacrosse League along with Air Force, Denver, Fairfield, Notre Dame and Ohio State. It was clear from the earliest days that athletics was destined to play a major role in shaping Butler University. When the school moved to its current Fairview Campus location in the 1920’s, two of the first structures completed were a 15,000-seat fieldhouse and a 36,000-seat football stadium. The fieldhouse, which was the largest of its kind when it was completed in 1928, is now a historical landmark. The Butler Fieldhouse, renamed Hinkle Fieldhouse in 1966, came to symbolize not only Butler athletics, but also “Hoosier Hysteria” in Indiana. The building became the combined home of Butler basketball and the Indiana High School State Tournament. The legends of Indiana basketball, from Oscar Robertson to George McGinnis to Larry Bird, all played in the Fieldhouse at one time or another. The football stadium, which came to be known as the Butler Bowl, was downsized to a 20,000-seat stadium in the mid-1950’s, and it continues to be the home for Butler football and lacrosse. The Bowl is slated for a major facelift beginning in March of 2005. While Hinkle Fieldhouse provided a nationally acclaimed setting for Butler athletics, it was Paul D. “Tony” Hinkle who brought national recognition to the school as a coach and athletic administrator. He came to Butler in 1921 and remained with the University until his death in 1992. Hinkle, who was credited with inventing the orange basketball, served as a teacher, coach and athletic administrator for nearly half a century, and he compiled more than 1,000 victories as coach of Butler’s football, basketball and baseball teams. He made a particular impact on Butler’s basketball program, winning 560 games from 1926 to 1970. Hinkle is enshrined in the James Naismith Basketball Hall Butler Athletics Horizon League Tournament Comes To Indianapolis Horizon League Championships 1986-87 Volleyball (Regular Season & Tournament) 1987-88 Volleyball (Regular Season & Tournament) 1988-89 Volleyball (Regular Season) 1989-90 Volleyball (Regular Season) 1990-91 Volleyball (Regular Season) 1992-93 Women’s Basketball (Regular Season) 1995-96 Baseball (Regular Season) Men’s Soccer (Tournament) Women’s Basketball (Tournament) Women’s Soccer (Regular Season) Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis will be the site of the 2005 Horizon League Baseball Championship, May 25-29. Located only five miles from the heart of the city, the campus offers easy access to cultural and sporting events in downtown Indianapolis. Butler’s mission is to provide the highest quality of liberal and professional education and to integrate the liberal arts into profession education by creating, and fostering a stimulating intellectual community built upon interactive dialogue and inquiry among faculty and students.
