January 27, 2017 - St. Ambrose School

FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2017
Middle School Blurb
Mrs. G’s Corner
In ELA, we wrapped up our guided readings for the 2nd
quarter. The comprehension assessments will be posted on
the Parent Portal. We are still reading our novel, Maniac
Magee. If you haven’t heard, we studied segregation and I
believe the students were very affected by my lesson. I
also read aloud Ruby and the Green Book. A special thanks
to Bill Miller for letting me use his I-pad for the day to
read it. This discusses the infamous Green Book which was
a travel guide of places that welcomed African Americans.
I’ve also stressed that one can be segregated by not just
race, but religion and sex as well. I’m hoping this
preparation can make for a meaningful engagement for the
book. Finally, we are still working on vocabulary. Unit 9 test
is Friday the 27th. Next week, is Catholic Schools’ Week, so
I will not be seeing 5th grade that often since most of our
fun activities are in the afternoon. We will pick up as usual,
the week after.
In Social Studies, we just completed the chapter on settling
into the colonies. The students did very well on the
assessment. The key is to pay close attention in class and
study the guide. Coming up next, we will focus on the New
England, Middle, and Southern Colonies of North America.
I wish everyone a warm and wonderful weekend.
Mrs. G.

And…we made it to the end of Q2! Next week is
Catholic Schools week, so there will be a bunch of
amazing activities going on through the week that
might cause a brief pause in content. However, is
what we are currently focusing on…
Math 5 just completed operations with decimals, and
we are moving onto expressions and patterns. We
will look at simplifying numerical expressions
(PEMDAS), sequences, and the coordinate plane.
Each week we will also spend 1 day reviewing
operations with decimals.
Math 6 and Math 7 just completed their chapter on
algebraic expressions and we will be moving onto
algebraic equations. We will be using packets and
technology full-time for this concept. The students’
math level will determine how far we take equations
(how many steps).
Math 8 has completed 17 independent studies thus
far. We are currently working through Systems of
Equations and how to solve them. They have studied,
graphing and 1 algebraic method – substitution. Next
we will look at the 2nd algebraic method – elimination.
If you have any questions please let me know!
