Job Title: Grant Writer Status: Exempt Salary: Based on Experience Reports to: Institutional Giving Manager Hours: Full Time DESCRIPTION Feeding America San Diego is seeking a motivated and experienced person to fill the open Grant Writer position. Under the direction of the Institutional Giving Manager, the Grant Writer is responsible for all aspects of the grant activities relating to Feeding America San Diego’s four Feeding Initiatives (Feeding Excellence, Feeding Kids, Feeding Families and Feeding Seniors) in compliance with the organization’s strategic plan and Development department goals. This includes seeking restricted and non-restricted funds from foundations, corporations, government agencies and individuals through the grant solicitation process. This includes writing and submitting grants proposals, letters of interest, reports and collateral material to a high volume of prospective donors and existing donors annually. The Grant Writer is also responsible for identifying new grant prospects and funding opportunities, as well as maintaining detailed records of all research, solicitations and transactions. The Grant Writer will work closely with Programs, Operations and Finance department staff to ensure performance compliance with grant contracts. They will work with the Institutional Giving Manager, other Grant Writer(s) and development and programs staff to achieve or exceed the goals of the department. Key responsibilities include, but may not be limited to: Prepare and submit grant solicitations to a portfolio of approximately 100 funders annually. Monitor incoming gifts for restricted and unrestricted grants from foundations, corporations, government agencies and individuals. Prepare tax acknowledgement letters and submit grant contracts in a timely and appropriate manner. Regularly update and maintain grants calendar, fund tracking tool and program sponsor spreadsheet to track funding received, relevant dates for contacting constituents, submitting proposals and preparing follow-up reports. Maintain accurate records of grant-related information in the donor database. Monitor grant stipulations and liaise with Feeding America San Diego staff to ensure programs performance remains consistent with stated outcomes in proposals. Disseminate restricted grant information to Feeding America San Diego staff detailing conditions of grant awards and coordinate all reports. Coordinate with program and financial staff to monitor program performance, expenses, and revenue on a quarterly basis. Consult and support other departments seeking grant funding for programs. Research, evaluate, identify and maintain a comprehensive list of prospective funding partners on an ongoing basis. Develop case statements to aid in grants and other fund solicitation needs throughout the department, creating, editing, and archiving boilerplate narrative. Assist with annual revenue projections and monitor those projections on a monthly basis. Monitor and update Feeding America San Diego statistics. EDUCATION AND SKILLS REQUIRED The ideal candidate has a background in grants coordination or writing, administration, fundraising, program coordination, or communications. The candidate should have a genuine interest in nonprofit development and a demonstrated ability to raise funds. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration, public administration, or a closely related field, and a minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience in grant development and coordination preferred OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Qualifications include: Successful track record of securing grants in the $10,000 - $100,000 range. Knowledge of and experience soliciting support for direct-to-service and partner programming. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. In particular, the ability to understand and organize detailed information and to write about or talk extemporaneously on that information. Ability to effectively and efficiently seek out and find needed information (grant opportunities, statistics, results, etc.) both within the organization and externally, including experience with grant prospect research tools. Experience writing within a brand, maintaining consistent language, formatting and Ability to be innovative and take the initiative to seek out additional funding opportunities. Ability to navigate multiple projects with attention to detail and accuracy while adhering to deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Exercise judgment and discretion; strong ethical character capable of handling confidential and financial information. Proficiency in Word, Excel, the Internet and donor management software (Salesforce preferred). Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to work effectively with other Feeding America San Diego staff and volunteers. LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS Must have reliable transportation and possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license including continuous proof of a satisfactory driving record and personal vehicle insurance coverage and insurability under the Agency’s insurance carrier standards. PHYSICAL, MENTAL & ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: Performs work in an office and warehouse space housing food bank warehouse operations which may occasionally create an exposure to dust and pollens. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time. May lift, carry and balance objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Pulls and pushes such objects as file drawers and supplies. Prioritizes and multi-tasks work and projects requiring good memory, concentration and analytical thinking. Occasionally is required to perform the safe operation office equipment and machines, and recognize and abate safety hazards within the workplace. Must be able communicate verbally and in writing frequently with a wide range of people from divergent socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and origins.
