The Facets of Emirati Women International Traveling Exhibition [Facets FITEx] is a World Englishes
initiative output by the Extremely Short Story Competition [ESSC] which aims to promote cultural
understanding through the creative use of World Englishes. The Facets FITEx Exhibition consists of
striking illustrations, each supported by a 50-word ‘Extremely Short Story’ on the theme ‘Facets of
Emirati Women,’ telling the stories related to the women-folk of a little-known cultural group. Created
by female and male students from Zayed University, UAE-University and the Higher Colleges of
Technology throughout the United Arab Emirates (UAE), these 34 story/photograph combinations are
mounted on light-weight foam art boards 76 x 40 cm (weighing approximately 12 kilograms in total)
and are thus easily delivered and may be displayed in a variety of ways as shown in the illustrations.
The Facets FITEx Exhibition has been shown at Birmingham University, UK; Télécom
ParisTech, TESOL France; the British Council, Milan, Italy; the EAQUALS Conference, Czech
Technical University, Prague; JAFAE Conference Kyoto Junior College of Foreign Languages, Japan;
Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education, Dundee, Scotland; TESOL Greece, Tripolis Art Centre
(Pnevmatiko Kentro); the QUEST Conference, Bucharest Romania; and at the Japanese Association
