MODIFICATION IN ENGLISH 10 FOR VOC Students with an IEP in English 10 with Marcia Hatch spend time working on Vocabulary lists and tests that have been modified by the inclusion teacher (Mary Pat Lane). Each Vocabulary unit contains 20 words but the IEP students are expected to learn 10 of those words. Each week the students are given a sheet with the list of 10 words, their definitions and synonyms, and the number of exercises from the book that accompanies those words. Often pictures, copied and pasted from Google Images, accompany several of the words. For example: "inter" was accompanied by a picture of a man digging a grave, and "vanguard” was accompanied by a picture of a warrior. Those same pictures, or ones very similar to the pictures on the unit list, appear on the Vocabulary test at the end of that week in a section called "PICTOCAB". The tests are also modified with chunking 5 words and their definitions in a box and 5 more words and their definitions in another box. A list of words in a Word Bank is provided on the test for Synonyms and Antonyms. The students have gradually been expected to write their own sentences to assure understanding of words. Sentences for the "Fill in the blank" section are rewritten from the original version to assure appropriate reading levels. These are a few of the modifications that have been successful with our sped population in English 10. See word list given and tests below.
