Thank you to all who came out for the FALL CLEANUP! Our school grounds are in great shape once more and certainly something to celebrate. We can also celebrate the communal effort shown by students, parents, and staff who came out to dig, sweep, pull weeds, and clean out the mechanical room. We are ready for winter! For Building and Grounds Committee, Mr. Edgar Veldman and Mrs. Ella Ringma Friday Flapper Page 2 of 5 Encounters with Canada: Thoughts by Grade 11/12 students Overall the week of Science and Ecology was more than I ever thought possible. I came with the mindset that it would be nothing, just another trip. I came away thinking I never wanted to leave. I’d explain it like a rollercoaster; slow to start, but once it was going I didn’t want it to end, finally you get off and you can’t help but think how awesome it was. I had a blast. There are simply no words to describe the kind of experience that Encounters with Canada was for me, so keep in mind that the following words will never live up to even an idea of the week in Ottawa. In a vain attempt to sum up the week in meager words, I say that Encounters was an unbelievably amazing experience. Not only did it surpass any expectations I had but it also left a permanent impression on me and who I am. I know that I will never be the same again. Poinsettia Sales! The High School band is now selling Poinsettias as well as other Christmas ornaments as a band fundraiser just until October 9!! Orders can also be placed in the front office. Poinsettias will be delivered in the first week of December. Follow instructions on the bottom of your child’s form. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Anita Struyk. Mrs. Anita Struyk Can you Plan a Party? Did you know that our school got its name from the fact that our first year of existence was 1967, Canada's centennial year? That means that next year, the 2016/2017 school year, will be our 50th year in existence! Will you help us plan and/or execute our Golden Jubilee Celebration? We need all the head, hearts and hands we can get. There will be big jobs and small jobs, jobs you can do with your kids and jobs you can complete in blissful solitude. So all you planners, doers and followthroughers out there, please leave your name with Charlene in the office so we can get a committee going. You may specify if you would prefer being a planner or only having a small role in the execution. Mrs. Estelle Lombard, From the School Board Pie Day Help – October 16/17 Pie Day is one of the Hearts & Hands biggest fundraising events and we need all hands on deck to make the 1000 apple pies that our ambitious students have sold! Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors and friends are asked to come and help out for a few hours. We especially need help throughout the school day, starting at 10 am. While the students are peeling and chopping the apples, we need adult volunteers to be quality control, checking the apples at each of the tables. The peeling, chopping and assembling of pies continues after school until 8 pm and Saturday from 9-12 am so there is ample opportunity to come help out! Friday Flapper Page 4 of 5 Head Lice We have had a couple cases of head lice reported in the school. Please check your child’s head for lice or nits. If you do find that your child has lice or nits in their hair, please start treatment immediately (this includes picking out any nits) and keep them home until one treatment is complete. After treatment your child is welcome at school and please be sure hair is pulled tight to avoid any missed nits or lice being passed. If you need any more information on treatment for lice, we have handouts in the office or please click on this Health Link. Edgar Veldman, Principal Terrace Churches Food Bank Collection It's Thanksgiving time again! We are inviting everyone in the school community to bring non-perishable items, for the Terrace Churches Food Bank, to the foyer by October 9. Our full school Thanksgiving assembly will be held on October 9 this year, come on out and join us! Time to be announced. Mrs. Jeanette Ewald Shoreline Cleanup Our grade 4-7's participated in The Great Canadian Shoreline Clean Up on Tuesday and picked up garbage on all of Ferry Island and then enjoyed some hot dogs over the campfire. Here are a couple quick snapshots we took. So proud of our Earth-Keepers and thankful for our parent volunteers who came to help! Mrs. Becky Kui Page 5 of 5 Friday Flapper Parking Lot As the start of a new school year it is good to remind each other of safe parking lot practices. Please help us keep the parking spot for disabled people open by not stopping in that spot. Also please avoid dropping your children off at the front steps of the school. Thank you for your cooperation. Mr. Edgar Veldman, Principal Old Jeans Anyone? The 8/9 class is looking for donations of old jeans for a project in Applied Skills.
