TEAM BUILDING USING EQUIPMENT IN YOUR SCHOOLS PE CUPBOARD
PE, Outdoor Educational and Adventurous Activities
Split the class into smaller groups (between 6 and 10) and rotate the groups around the activities, giving them a
maximum of 10 minutes per activity.
SECRET PATHWAY – using 10 – 15 hoola hoops of various sizes placed on the floor as set out below and have a sheet
with the path marked on it (that one group member looks after) one at a time the group members work their way
from circle to circle, if they are correct they carry on but if they make a wrong move they step out, join the back of
the queue and the next person makes their way through using the same route and then carry on forward. The other
group members need to memorise the route taken by those previous. The challenge is to get all the team across
from start to finish helping each other to get through using the correct route.

TACTICAL TARGETS – Using 3 – 5 hoola hoops, a skipping rope and some bean bags, let each group member throw a
beanbag and add their scores together as they go (only score inside hoops), collect the beanbags and get them to
throw the beanbags again with the challenge of beating their previous score, or split the team into two and they play
against each other. (You could use an actual floor target painted on a tarpaulin)
Get them to look at their use of tactics how many do they need to score, can they beat their score just by getting one
each? If some people miss how does their tactics need to change? Look at making a plan before throwing to beat
their initial target score

Skipping rope denotes the line to throw the
bean bags from; distance depends on age/
ability of pupils

PROBLEM SOLVING NUMBERS 1 EQUALATERAL TRIANGLE – Numbers 1-9 laminated on pieces of paper or card, the
challenge is to place the numbers around the triangle (4 numbers on each side) so that the sum of the four numbers
on each side add up to the same
One possible answer is shown alongside but the
actual formula for completing the task is
Add up the numbers 1 – 9 (45)
Plus the 3 corner numbers added again (+6 =51)
Divided by 3 (sides) = 17
Different corner numbers will give different
answers (some do not work)

With both problem solving number
problems, if you had 9 people in the group,
each with a number they could stand in
the grids in the appropriate place
FARMERS FIELD – Using flat cones a couple of ropes and some blindfolds – get children into pairs and one had to
lead their partner through the farmers field without stepping on any cones (cow pats) if they touch a cone they start
again, rules are that leaders are not allowed inside the roped area (leading with voice not touch) once through the
pairs swap over and the leader becomes the blindfolded person and the blindfolded person becomes the leader.
With taller cones and canes you could also put small hurdles in to step over
Randomly
place cones
into a set or
roped off area
and the
children lead
their partners
through from
start to finish
VOID – Using two canes or ropes, a tape measure and a rolled up sheet of A4 paper – the two canes or ropes are
placed parallel on the floor 300mm apart and the group stand on either side of the canes/ ropes facing each other,
the challenge is to pass the rolled up A4 across the void hand to hand (no throwing) and the tape is used to measure
the distance achieved. Each time the roll of paper is passed successfully between the two groups the distance
between the canes/ ropes gets wider, as the canes/ ropes get wider apart the groups need to support each other.
