FLU VACCINE FOR 2015-2016 FLU SEASON ANNOUNCEMENTS Across the U.S., approximately 115,000 people are hospitalized each year as a result of severe illness from the flu. Influenza is the 9th leading cause of death in the country. The good news is that there is something we can all do to keep our families and our community safer. Children and adults who receive the INFLUENZA VACCINE each year are on average 70% less likely to get sick and less likely to spread illness to older relatives and neighbors. The flu vaccine is now available at CMC during the following times: At any scheduled appointment with Dr. Maria Gonzalez, Melanie Key, ARNP, and Beth Fulford, ARNP. By appointment only: Tue. from 9:00-11:30 a.m. and 2:00-4:00 p.m. Wed. from 9:00-11:30 a.m. Fri. from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Please call 658-5300 to schedule your appointment for the flu vaccine and help keep our community and families healthy this flu season Thank you, The Copeland Medical Staff Notes from the President’s Desk By Craig Carter YOU ARE INVITED TO A SPECIAL CELEBRATION Thur., Oct. 1, 2:00-4:00 p.m., TNF&M As you are probably aware, the proceeds from each of the Village volunteer operated shops support the ministries of ACV. Through the years, these moneys have been used to provide much needed improvements to infrastructure, for renovations or construction of facilities, for special projects and equipment and for the benevolent fund. We are so grateful for each and every person who has been involved in these endeavors. It gives me great pleasure to announce that it’s time to celebrate a milestone in the life of one of our shops! Ever since Twice Nice Furniture and More (TNF&M) opened its doors at the new processing center on C.R. 250, it has been supporting the benevolent fund and using proceeds to pay off an “internal mortgage.” I’m happy to announce that through the many donations given to ACV to be sold at TNF&M and through the hard work of its volunteers, the mortgage has been paid off! The best part is that it will enable more dollars to be used for the benevolent ministry of ACV. You are invited to a drop-in celebration at TNF&M on Thur., Oct. 1 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Please come and help us congratulate the volunteers on this wonderful achievement. The store will be open so come, have some refreshments, check out this great place and who knows, you might just also find something you can’t live without! LED2SERVE SERVICE JOURNEY Last week we were blessed to have 49 10th grade high school students and their chaperons with us here at ACV. This was the first time that these students were here and they really enjoyed the village setting and took part in team building activities at Camp Suwannee. This group of wonderful young people performed 294 hours of service for the members here at ACV and the ACV community. A big part of this time together was the interaction between the students and our members. The chance to watch the students offering tech support for technology, physical labor, and the story telling and relationship building between the students and members will be something remembered by all. For those who attended the ice cream social, the chance to hear some really wonderful young musicians was a treat. Read on and find out what other members had to say. They were not even put off by the resident spiders and their webs on the outside! Every day I enjoy the fruits of their labor. Lee Dean Led2Serve came to ACV and was a welcome group of young people. Five of them and one of their leaders came to our house. Their hearts are full of Hebraic teaching and expressions such as “Dor la Dor” (From Generation to Generation) a recognition of the need to pass on to each succeeding generation the truth that God has delivered to this generation. Led2Serve was a sterling example of young people with a zeal to serve God and honor their elders by serving the people here as they were able. Three young men and their leader helped put storage items in our garage attic and in one of our closets which RIVERSIDE GIFTS ELVES MEET On a beautiful fall afternoon of Sept. 20, the Elves of Riverside Gifts were hosted for Tea at the home of Herb and Emelie Horsley, on the banks of the peaceful Suwannee River. The “Elves” are 4 we can’t reach at the present time. Two lovely young ladies helped Jane with her iPad and both interviewed us for their school paper and team debriefing. It was a great time and they were poised, kind, and helpful. Thank you, Led2Serve, for bringing these young people to ACV. We were blessed to have them visit. They were issued by the OPA (Office of Price Administration) and used for rationing. Rationing included canned goods, meats, sugar, coffee, tires, gas and more. These tokens were commonly used by merchants to give change back for foods – the red tokens were for meats and fats. They are made of vulcanized fiber (celluloid) and some of them are quite rare and valuable. The person who correctly guessed was Kierstine Newhard. She can stop by the Rustic Shop and pick up her prize. The new mystery item will be in the window on Wed. Many thanks to all who participated and loaned the tokens. If you weren’t able to join us last week, have no fear! Before we begin our discussion on Revelation (not the book, but how God reveals Himself to the world and to those who follow Him), we will have a short review of last week’s lesson. The book by J.I. Packer, Concise Theology, is not a requirement for the class, but will be helpful. Our recent book order is backordered until Oct. 7, but I will make sure you’re not missing anything important if you are still waiting for a book. If you have the book already, please read the sections on Revelation, General Revelation, Authority, Self-Disclosure, Prophets, Apostles and Angels for this Sun. If you’re looking for a thought provoking class that will challenge your spiritual life, we’d love for you to join us. SUWANNEE REGIONAL LIBRARY BOOK CLUB AT ACV Tue., Oct. 27, 10:00 a.m., SMR The next meeting of the Book Club, led by librarian, Rhoda Cribbs Odom of the Live Oak Public Library, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tue., Oct. 27. The club will review The Glass Castle, by Jeanette Walls. There are a couple copies available for loan. Contact Member Services to sign out a copy. THE TRY-ATHLETES ARE BACK! On Oct. 23-24, the ACV Try-Athletes will be back in action running the Ragnar Relay Race. This time they will be running from Chattanooga to Nashville, TN. This is about 200 miles for the 12 runners to accomplish. To raise money for this we are putting on a raffle for a brand new Yeti Cooler, or $250 cash. To get a ticket for this drawing that will be held on Oct. 17, you will need to contact one of the Village representatives below. Tickets are $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. You can purchase as many as you like! 7 SUN. EVENING at 6:00 in the SMR/DR the ladies of the WHFMS (mission circles) will be presenting an update on what this mission “arm” of the church is involved in, especially in the current fundraising for “Christmas in October.” This is an opportunity for us as Christ-honoring men, women, and children to share our love (through gifts of money) with missionaries, (current and retired) and with church leaders in many foreign countries who have affiliated with the Advent Christian Church. There will also be some favorite hymns shared and brief testimonies given. Sun., Oct. 4, we will join other Christians around the globe in observing WORLD COMMUNION DAY by sharing communion together in our morning service. All who love the Lord are invited to participate. Individual communion elements will be available next week at the front desks in CH and DH, at the IC and in the church office for those who worship with us by way of TV2. VOLUNTEER SERVICES Eleanore Catarious – 658-5251 P.O. Box 4304 It seems that these rather cool and pleasant mornings are telling us that we are in for a change in the weather and welcoming us to autumn. We just have to get through the last month of hurricane season. Speaking of cooler weather, there is a need on the ACV Beautification Team for someone who prefers to be outdoors and wouldn't object to picking up litter around the Village. There is no particular schedule; it can be done at any time, for as long as you like, and supplies will be provided. Many visitors notice various aspects of the Village; therefore, it is important for the grounds to look extra special. There have been many positive comments from visitors pertaining to the appearance of the outdoor spaces. So sign up now, maybe bring a friend, and assist the team in this rewarding volunteer endeavor. Just give me a call. In last week's column, the Woodworking Shop with its Christmas elves was mentioned, and after the FNN was printed, we realized that Pat Moseley, of CH, had been omitted. She is an integral part of the Christmas Toy Project and has been for years. Thank you, Pat, for your creative contributions. There is a need for Reassurance Callers. If, for some reason, you are confined to your apartment but would still like to be part of the Volunteer Family, being a Reassurance Caller just may be something that would interest you. This is a twofold service. One, the caller determines if everything is all right, or if there is a need for further assistance; and two, a bond is established between the caller and the member through the daily contact. It is comforting just knowing that someone is concerned for your welfare each day. This means the caller makes the call every day at a time convenient with the caller and the member. Right now someone is waiting for a caller to step forward. Thank you. F.Y.I. - Approximately 47% of our volunteers returned their Aug. Monthly Volunteer Hours Reports. Many thanks to all. I expect that percentage will be higher once all the volunteers return to their respective volunteer positions. WORK like you don't need the money, LOVE like you've never been hurt, DANCE like no one's watching, SING like no one is listening, and LIVE like it's HEAVEN on Earth! Author unknown CAMP SUWANNEE Doug Mabey, Director, 658-5100 Sept. Pool Hours Sat., 1:00-4:00 p.m. Last day of the season will be Sat., Sept. 26 MEMBER SERVICES Ann Thompson, VP, 658-5400 Isn’t wonderful as we plan for Autumn Fest on Oct. 3 that the weather is getting us in the mood? These cooler mornings are such a delight. I hope you will mark this date down on your calendar and invite your family and friends to join you for the events at the VS. In addition to the shopping, the Auto Show will also be in the VS area. Another treat during Autumn Fest will be musical entertainment at the VS by Sweet Harmony. Sweet Harmony is a ladies’ singing trio and they love to share gospel, oldies, and all types of music. If you attended the Sept. Coffee House Concert at Stephen Foster State Park, you heard them perform. Member Services Tip of the Week: Each ACV Member is assigned a Service Coordinator. Did you know you could email them at first letter of their first name and last name? For example: Ashley is [email protected] Debbie is [email protected] and D’Arcy is [email protected]. In order, to better serve you it would be helpful if you would call them or the Member Services number 658-5150 if you would like to make an appointment or speak with them. The Service Coordinators are away from the office at times assisting other members and this would prevent you from making a trip to the office if they are not in. NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS BUTTERFIELD ACRES Reporter, Cheryl Gilroy We wish a very happy birthday to Jim Gilroy on Sept. 28, Matthew Hilliard on Sept. 29 and Micah Hilliard on Sept. 29. 8 Several ladies from BA enjoyed attending the Hawaiian-themed FL Conference Ladies’ Retreat held at Camp Suwannee last weekend. It was a good time of fellowship, laughter, grass skirts, hula hoops, and inspiration. The speaker, Karen Hall, inspired us with lessons from the book of Ruth. ACV’s Mary Carter was appointed “Queen of the Retreat” and Connie Jones, was chosen to represent the Central District as one of the princesses of the retreat. The luau lunch on Sat., catered by Cliff Burr and his wonderful staff, was absolutely delicious. And we learned that Aloha is more than a word of greeting, farewell or salutation ... it's a way of life. Aloha means mutual regard and affection, and extends warmth in caring with no expectation of anything in return. and his team were plentiful, attractive, and delicious! Our visitors were very impressed with our Open House! On Fri. afternoon, Dick Grillo and “Cowboy Bob” Denny entertained us with a variety of music while the Cabinet Members made banana splits for us! Thank you to: Tim Setzer, Jim Schenck, Pam Smythe, Keri Hilliard, Steve Hett, and Sandie Hugg! You made some great tasting banana splits! It was a busy week, but oh so good! Nourishing our Lives: Body, Mind, Spirit! We certainly did! Again, thank you to all who helped make it a success! The Craft Class was again on Sat., working on flower pots, decorative plate sets, plant stands and birdbaths as we have had many orders placed! Come by and see our crafts on display! Now, we are back to our regularly scheduled activities and glad to slow things down a bit. This week we had a sing-a-long with Peyton and Jeanne Florence, Exercise class, Bingo, Ceramics, and the Heart to Heart hour. On Wed. afternoon, we enjoyed a reception to meet and greet Liz Dudek, Secretary of AHCA (Agency for Health Care Administration). Following the reception, Jim Gilroy led our weekly Vespers Service. We welcome Judy Setzer and George Millis back to DM following their rehab stay at GSC. Emerson Moore has also joined us at DM and we welcome him. We wish the best to “Dink” Dinkins and Ken Knappen, who both came for a short respite stay and are now home. We welcome Irene Vann to room 1310. Irene is the mother of AC Missionary, Jeff (and Penny) Vann and Susan Singleterry. Susan and her daughter, Kristy Grest, helped Irene set up her room and she is quite content and comfortable. She and roommate, Lois Dotson, hit it off very well! Irene’s sister, Vanette Sanders, found Irene right away and had a good time “catching up.” Welcome to you, Irene Vann! Dropping by to say “hello” to Emerson Moore were Garth “Doc” and Karen Story from MA. We want to wish our nurse, Nikki Rogers a happy birthday on the Sept. 18 and to Nikki and her husband, Derrick, a happy anniversary on Sept. 23. Linda Hughes and Babs Martin will celebrate their birthdays on Sept. 24 and 25, respectively. Happy day to all! We welcome staff member, Miranda Tehan, back to work from her maternity leave, even though it was difficult to leave her adorable baby with the babysitter! Congratulations to staff member, Brittany Smith, and her husband, Todrick, on the birth of their baby boy! They are all are doing well! CARTER HOUSE Reporter, Debby Vowell Patty Lupo returned to the Village after recently spending five days with family in SC. She enjoyed being with family members. She had a good time attending a book fair, eating out, visiting, and laughing with family. She saw her granddaughter and husband’s new home. A birthday party was held there for their daughter, Skylynn, who is eight years old. We welcomed Patty back to the Village. Praise God for family and journeying mercies. Thank you to the All Saints Christian Academy working with Led2Serve for the help they gave here at the Village. We had some wonderful helpers at the rose garden, weeding and cutting off the dead flowers. They were good girls and did exactly what they were asked to do. CH would like to thank Aslyn, Reem (who had a birthday), Jowana, Michelle, Katie, and Keyana. They are from the Winter Haven area of Polk County. Happy birthday to Sally Sparks, who had a birthday party last Fri. Several of her friends were there and we hope that Sally had a good time. Also happy birthday wishes to Francine Stratton and Barbara Clegg. We hope everyone has a good week. God bless everyone. If you have an item you would like in the FNN, you may put it in the FNN box at the front desk of CH, or call me at 249-5774. DACIER MANOR Beth Smith, Reporter WOW! We had one of the VERY BEST ALF Weeks imaginable! Our Open House was delightful and I appreciate the following residents for showcasing their rooms: Peggy Howland, Lilya Patterson, Babs Martin, Mary Crosby, Joann Miller, Nancy Henry, Mary Henning, Linda Hughes, Mary Overhulser, Carole Bailey, Jim Murphy, Jan Gurniak, and Lloyd McCall. Carole Bailey and Garth Driscoll were our greeters for the afternoon and did a superb job meeting people as they entered our dining area and helping them find a seat after signing our guest book. The refreshments provided by Robbie Joynt DOWLING HOUSE Janice Chapman, Reporter Happy birthday to Janice Chapman, who will observe a birthday on Sat., Sept. 26 and to Jean Snyder on Tue., Sept. 29. May your day be special followed by another year of God’s presence and blessings in your lives. 9 Several ladies gathered in the Lopin’ Gopher on Mon. evening and honored me, Janice, with a birthday cake, made by Margaret Trinder, my neighbor. Betty June Kerce, Norma Shook, Joy Whitmore and Rachel Eagen were also at the table. Then Ted Jones led others in the Lopin’ Gopher at the time in singing Happy Birthday to me. Thank you. It was special. We have new members in DH this week. Welcome to you. We hope to get better acquainted with each of you. Help us get to know you better. Always remember one another in prayer. There’s always room to praise the Lord for His blessings rather than focusing on our pain. God knows all needs and we exercise our faith in His love and power as we pray for each other. Share with us your happy times, your guests’ visits and other things of common interest as we interact together in DH. You may put a note in the box at the DH desk, e-mail me at [email protected], or telephone me at 658-2015. over to visit with Rick and Barbara for a couple of days before heading to the next venue in NY. EDGEWOOD TERRACE Dick Barkley, Reporter It’s great to report that Claudia McClaine has returned home and is improving daily after spending six weeks in the hospital. Also, the Knappens are back in their home following several days in the hospital (Mitzie) and in DM (Ken). Each of them wishes to thank all those who have been praying for them. Maxie Brown has returned home after attending the funeral of a friend in Homerville, GA. There’s been a whole lot of visiting in the ET neighborhood during the past week. From IN, Bob and Paulette Hoffman came to visit Frank and Myrle Sinclair, their friends of 40-years duration. Dorothy Simpson’s son, Jeff, dropped by for a day from his home in Lantana, FL. Bob of St. Marks, FL, came to spend time with his mother, Loretta Phillips. And Craig came all the way from OK to spend a couple of days with parents Jim and Bev Bell. Later in the week, to have a belated birthday celebration with Jim who reached the age of 97 on Sept. 9, the Bells were blessed with a visit by son, Duncan, and his wife, Kim; plus grandson, Tyler, and his girlfriend, Lacy, all from Callahan, FL. Bev said she was particularly blessed by their guests bringing and serving delicious meals for all. Visiting with Pat Putman this week are two daughters who notched many travel miles to arrive here. Cynthia came from Ottawa, Canada. And Susan is here all the way from Perth, Australia. ET dwellers having birthdays during the coming week are Betty Copeland on Sept. 24, Ed Specht on Sept. 26, and Jenny Specht on Sept. 28. All ET residents are urged to clear your calendars for the morning of Oct. 13. More info about the neighborhood’s Fall Meeting on that Tue. will be in future FNNs. DOWLING MANOR/ DOWLING PARK NORTH Gayle Jones & Audrey Murray, Reporters We have two reports of special family events our neighbors shared with us this week. Pomeroy and Jerry Carter report that last week end they had a very busy, but enjoyable, few days. On Sat. their grandson, Adam Carter, married Karson Stavig in a beautiful wedding at the VC. In addition to the wedding celebration they enjoyed time spent with many local and out of town guests. They were able to get better acquainted with Karson’s family and spend time with Adam’s other grandparents, Ruben and Cathy Rakow and their son and his family from Wisconsin. It was especially nice to have their daughter Kay, and her friend, June Danka, here from IL. After everyone left on Sun. afternoon they relaxed and are still enjoying some R and R. Rick and Barbara Phipps flew to Denver, CO two weekends ago to see their son David play at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Red Rocks is one of the most beautiful amphitheaters in the world and seats 10,000. This was the 10th year for the band to play at Red Rocks. David plays keyboards in a technojazz band called Sound Tribe Sector Nine or just STS9 for short. David has been a member of the band since its beginning in 1998 while David was in college at GA Tech. David feels blessed to have been able to make a very good living as a professional musician. When the band plays at Red Rocks, many of the band members’ parents and family come for the two days the band plays. It is like a family reunion. All get to see their grandchildren and have a great time catching up with the band members’ parents and family members. The band plays at venues all over the U.S. and has played several times in Japan and other countries. They will be playing at Spirit of the Suwannee at the end of Oct. and David will stay PARK OF THE PINES Betsy Reynolds, Reporter Our last birthday of the month is on Wed., Sept. 23 when Marie Feero celebrates her 91st birthday. Congratulations and best wishes for a great day. It’s amazing when you think about aging. I don’t think any one of us thinks about growing old and then suddenly one day we are there! Yikes! Marie says she stays busy with some volunteering and having lunch with friends. She recently had lunch and a nice visit with Martha Cunningham’s daughter, Deb, and her husband from TX. She reports that Martha is very happy and doing well in her new home near another daughter. Glad to hear that news. 10 Have you noticed that the mornings are cooler and also darker a bit longer? Fall is just around the corner - hurray! I’ll be glad when all the snowbirds are back and the Village takes on a new energy. We got an e-mail from Robert Story regarding a recent visit with his brother, Dr. Garth and his wife, Karen, I’ll let Bob tell the story: “Bob and Brenda Story were blessed by a recent three-day visit from Bob's brother, Dr. Garth (“Doc”) Story, and wife, Karen, from Lee, MA. They kept very busy! Thur., they visited Madison (steam engine) and neighboring Greenville, which was the boyhood home of Ray Charles. There you can see a life-size bronze statue of Mr. Charles at the piano, and also the home where he lived. On Fri., they spent the day in Gainesville, where Garth received his doctorate in education from the Univ. of FL. There were many changes from the late 60's to the early 70's! On Sat., they visited Wakulla Springs. The local Story's are a bit worn out (!) but agree it is a blessing to be able to stay in touch with family!” All for this printing, so keep me posted on any events you celebrate, or visitors you entertain. [email protected]. RIVER WOODS Eleanore and Joe Catarious, of Wildwood Circle, have just returned from PA after celebrating the 100th birthday of Eleanore's mother, Lottie Abronski. Mrs. Abronski resides in the Lutheran Community of Telford, outside Philadelphia, and was honored by family, relatives and friends. She was recently recognized in the local newspaper, the local TV station, and also by President and Mrs. Barack Obama. She is the mother of Eleanore, Allen Clark, Lynn Ciamaichelo, and John Abronski, grandmother of 12, great-grandmother of 22, and great-great-grandmother of 4. As much as she wasn't keen on all of the festivities, she reigned as “Queen for a Day” with another community birthday party being held this week. God has blessed her with a sound mind and body. Joan returned with Mary to Dowling Park for a week, including attending the Ladies’ Retreat on Sept. 18 and 19. PURPLE HEARTS RECIPIENTS The City of Live Oak will be holding a special recognition event for those living in the area who are Purple Heart recipients. If you were awarded a Purple Heart for military service, please contact Member Services at 658-5400. My mother memorized this poem in “grade school” many years ago and recited it to me every Oct. It is still a special memory. Last week we talked about the Led2Serve group who were spending the week here at the Village. They were 10th graders from central FL and a pleasant group to have around. Some of us did ask these students to help us in our apartments. Their long arms made easy work of getting boxes from high shelves and solar curtains down from the windows. They were also much more “tech smart” and boy, were they quick. Our group was rather small as one family moved to GA, several are not feeling well, and one lady was on vacation. Hopefully we will get together to welcome Fall – and isn’t it about time. VOTE IN HONOR OF A VETERAN Hon. Glenda B.
