MICS MS/HS Independent Summer Enrichment 2015

MICS MS/HS Independent Summer Enrichment 2015
Summer Enrichment Activities
What is the purpose of
assigning Summer Enrichment Activities?
Our goal with the optional
Independent Summer Enrichment program is to inspire students to prepare
and review for Common
Core based literacy and
math skills for the next
grade level.
Why do students have to
read and practice math
skills over the summer?
According to NEA, students
will lose three months worth
of learning if they have a
summer without practicing
reading and math skills. That
has proven to have an impact
on cumulative loss for the
new school year.
ready assigned summer reading assignments for students
who are already registered in
their classes. These students are welcome to complete the Summer Enrichment Reading as well.
How do students submit
their responses?
USA Test Prep and IXL responses will already be automatically submitted based on
student activity. We encourage students to read nonfiction and fiction sources
from CommonLit. On
www.commonlit.org, students
can choose downloadable articles, research, poetry, and
short stories and use the
Google Form to respond to all
of the questions.

More Information
How often should students read
daily?
We recommend that students spend
30-45 minutes using the following
sites we offer: USA Testprep and
Commonlit. Both of these sites offer a variety of activities on informational and literature texts.
USA Testprep
We recommend that students spend
30 minutes a day on USA Testprep.
Rising 6-12 students have already
been programmed in to receiving their
assignments beginning June 11th.
Rising 7-12 students have already
taken benchmark exams from this
program. Thus, they should still have
the same username and password
from this past school year.
They will not be completing benchmarks on USATestprep for this summer. They will only be engaged in
interactive activities to improve reading comprehension in the following
areas:

10 Practice Questions
Students are assigned a literature or informational passage to
read. Then, they are provided textevidence based questions aligned with
the grade level Common Core Standards.

Performance Based Assessments
These exercises ask students
to apply their understanding of a
concept by classifying, ordering, or
labeling items properly.

Games
This consists of one and two-
player games, arcade bonus rounds,
and more.

Vocabulary
Students use context clues to
figure out an unknown word.
Here are the recommended weekly
submission dates for reading and
math:
For each assignment, students are
able to retry up to three times.
