Jottings from the Chair
A while ago, a few of us were talking about what lay ahead as our
ability to live independently diminishes or disappears.
The prospect of a care home didn’t thrill BUT what if we had a
‘NCU3A care home’ with a central room big enough for meetings,
talks, a bit of dancing and a bit of singing. Could be fun?
Do we have an entrepreneur amongst us who could set it up?
Darcey Bussell recently gave a talk to a House of Commons
committee about the value of teaching dancing in schools.
Amongst other things she said it encouraged creative and inventive
thinking and importantly released endorphins!
With this last bit in mind I am holding another cèilidh dance for
anyone who would like to come along. Why should children have
all the fun?! It will be held on Saturday 22nd April from 7.30 to
9.30pm in Willersey Village Hall. The cost of £1 includes tea, coffee
and biscuits. It would be useful to have an idea of numbers so please
phone me on tel. 01386 853125 or speak to someone in the Scottish
Country Dancing Group.

Opera Appreciation
Hilary Thornburgh writes,
John Busbridge writes,
‘Six of us set off from Winchcombe
on the first Friday of March, with
another member waving us off and
finding it difficult to understand why
we should want to walk on such a
day. Actually, if our leader, Tony
Spinks had suggested aborting the
walk in favour of coffee I would
have readily agreed! But the rain
was not so hard and Vicky Shipton
was sure she could see some
lightening of the cloud.
‘After 20 years, 164 meetings and
140 different operas presented,
listened to or watched, I have
decided to retire! Unfortunately,
there is nobody at present who has
appropriate accommodation and
equipment who would be prepared
to host the Group.
Our first target was to reach Belas
Knap after which the main climbing
for the day would be over. It was a
good hour’s walk but we were
rewarded by seeing one other mad
lone walker and the hills in the
distance were fairly clear. Tony
had laid on a special cave in the
side of the burial mound where we
could sit comfortably for our hot
drinks and we were soon well
settled (see photo, top left).
By the time coffee and treats were
taken it had virtually stopped
raining and we were able to
continue, soon walking through a
field full of lambs (see photo, left).
Much of the walk was on the
Cotswold Way which took us
through a picturesque wooded
valley between Woodpeckers and
Breakheart Plantation, where we
particularly admired the long,
intricate and gnarled, spreading
roots of several trees.
By the time we returned to The
Corner Cupboard we were fairly
dry and were rewarded by a very
warm and cosy pub and a good
lunch.
There must be a moral to this tale’.

This National Trust Property has recently undergone extensive
refurbishment.
It was the former home of the Gibbs family, who accumulated their
wealth from the guano trade! They bought the estate in 1843 and remodeled both the interior and exterior in the Victorian Gothic Revival
style, creating a magnificent family home and estate of gardens and
parkland to be enjoyed by four generations until the death of Richard
Gibbs in 2001.
In 2002 the National Trust undertook a massive fund raising campaign to
prevent the estate from being sold to private interests and preserve its
collection of over 50,000 objects.
The house and gardens will be open for viewing and there is a restaurant
where coffee and lunch may be purchased. There are also three shops
where you can browse and buy!
We shall depart from Willersey Village Hall and travel by coach.
The cost will be in the region of £7 for NT members, £19.50 for nonmembers.
