Paper Storage and Conditioning

Paper Storage and Conditioning
Hints & Tips
Paper is predominantly composed of cellulose fibre sourced from trees. These fibres are “hygroscopic” which
means they draw in or expel moisture depending on the atmospheric conditions. Each wrapper of Xerox/Fuji
Xerox paper has a moisture proof barrier that maintains the paper in its own “micro environment”. This
ensures that the paper will perform to its maximum ability. However in the situation where the ream has been
opened, the paper is now subjected to changes in the Relative Humidity (RH) of the operating area.
The following hints and tips will help you achieve the best results from your Xerox papers.
Conditioning Paper
All paper must be conditioned to the temperature and humidity of the room containing the copier/printer.
Paper should be put in the same room as the copier/printer at least 24 hours prior to use.
Temperature and Humidity
The room temperature where the paper is stored can have a significant effect on how that paper will perform.
The control of humidity also, is one of the most important precautions that can be taken to maximise quality
output. Coated papers especially are very susceptible to high humidity. The air-conditioned storage
environment should be controlled within the following ranges.
Temperature:
Humidity:
20c to 23c degrees
45% to 55% relative humidity
Paper storage
• Do not store paper reams or cartons directly on the floor; this increases the possibility of moisture
absorption.
• Store cartons and un-opened reams on shelves or in cabinets protected from extremes of temperature and
humidity.
• Do not open reams of paper until the paper is to be loaded into the copier/printer.
• Do not leave paper in the by-pass tray or high capacity feeder
• When paper from an opened ream will not be used for a period of time, store that paper back in its ream.
Alternatively, use the Fuji Xerox Supplies recommended storage bin system.
Paper storage bins.
The condition of paper stock is a very important factor to ensure high quality image output. The quality of
the image can be seriously affected by a number of aspects.
• Damage to the paper edges or surface.
• Increased moisture content from opened packs
• Decreased moisture content from opened packs
• Dirt or dust introduced via opened or split wrappers.
• Storage in hot or cold conditions.
The use of a paper storage bin will protect opened reams. Silica-gel sachets inserted into the storage bin will
absorb any extra moisture that weather changes cause. A minimum of 3 and up to 5 sachets should be used
depending on the environmental extremes. The sachets should last at least 6 weeks before their replacement
becomes necessary, at which time the crystals change colour to indicate they are exhausted. To maximise the
life of the sachets and control of each open pack, the lid must be kept on and sealed at all times.
