Determine whether you are able to live in a slightly disorganized space, a spotless home, or with a lot of clutter, and let your roommate know what he or she can expect from you. • Will our schedules and habits be disruptive to one another? Do you prefer to stay up late and listen to music or watch TV? You may consider looking for a roommate who has the same habits so you don’t bother one another’s sleep schedules. If you need silence and space to study, make sure you find a roommate who doesn’t distract you with too much chit-chat or a loud TV. Helpful Hint. • Will you both be communicative? Remember, you are going to live with this person for the next 16 months. Getting a roommate is a great way to save money on your living expenses. Make sure he or she talks to you about bills, problems, and other aspects to keep your living situation comfortable. Where to find a roommate. Many students will be starting in the same cohort who need a roommate. • Your Advisor: Your advisor may know of other students who are looking for a roommate. Speak to him or her! • Your Network: You may know people who are looking for a roommate without knowing it. Send out a status update, tweet, text, or call to find out if someone you know needs a roommate or knows of someone who does. • Online: There are a couple of online options to look for roommates, such as RoomieMatch.com, EasyRoommate.com, and Roomester.com.
