In 2013, there were 761 Nigerian student enrolments in Australia. The UN forecasts Nigeria will replace the US as the world’s third most populous country by 2050. Nigeria’s current population is 170 million, with 62 per cent of the population under the age of 25, and 43 per cent under the age of 14. In 2015, 1.4 million Nigerians sat the online university admissions exam – Nigeria’s tertiary institutions have capacity to admit only half a million of these students. The growing demand for quality education from an expanding middle class is greater than the capacity of Nigerian schools and tertiary institutions. The British Council predicts that by 2024, Nigeria will record the world’s highest annual average growth in overseas postgraduate study (8.3 per cent) and in that period, growth for postgraduates studying in Australia is expected to steadily increase. Ghana Ghana achieved middle income status in 2010, and has had strong economic growth over the last five years. More than 4,000 Ghanaian students study abroad annually, predominantly in the UK and the US. Ghana has high potential for growth in international education. Australia currently gets just a fraction of international students from Ghana, with around 412 Ghanaian students currently studying in Australia in 2016. Increased government focus and investment on education and scholarships from multinational agencies present good potential for international student recruitment.
