VISION STATEMENT
WE, the parish of Our Lady of Victory,
proclaim with joy the presence of Jesus in the world through Word, Sacrament, and deed. It is through our discipleship
that we recognize our connection to God, our neighbor, and our deepest spiritual selves.
WE, seek to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ by:
+ Welcoming all with kindness, compassion and hospitality. + Nourishing the faith life of the community through
prayer, fellowship and education. + Reverencing the dignity of each person by celebrating the beauty of life from
conception to natural death. + Nurturing the gifts of all so that each person may live out his or her unique and personal
call from God. + Caring for the needs of the less fortunate by empowering our parish community to answer that call.
WE, do this in the name of Jesus Christ and the mandate:
“See those Christians how they love one another!”

Dear Parishioners,
This weekend marks the 95th Anniversary of the
establishment of Our Lady of Victory Parish. In
preparation for the event I went through some of the
parish archives - including the 50th anniversary
journal from 1971. It is filled with great history and
great pictures! I was wondering if we had an
archivist in the parish who would like to do some
volunteer work in preparation for our 100th Anniversary in 2021.
Here’s three interesting pieces of information I
came across:
- In 1921, the parish comprised about 150 families.
The ground, rectory and church represented an
investment of some $140,000. The Church was
dedicated on September 7, 1924 by Bishop Molloy.
- In his dedication sermon, Father John J. Patterson
stressed the importance and value of Catholicity, not
only as a teaching and sanctifying agency, but as a
social agency as well. “The more faithful Catholics
we are, the better Americans we must be, loyal to
our country, to the community in which we live, and
to ourselves.” His message continues to be relevant
today!
- A series of new parishes were established from
OLV territory between 1929 and 1951: St. Anne’s
in Garden City, St. Gregory the Great in Bellerose,
Our Lady of Snows in North Floral Park and St.
Vincent DePaul in Elmont.
Parish History Highlights
October 22, 1921 – Bishop Thomas E. Molloy establishes the Parish of Our Lady of Victory, Floral
Park and appoints Father Patrick Hart to be the first
Pastor.
July 1922 – Property is purchased for OLV Church
November 15, 1922 – Construction on the rectory
was begun
March 25, 1923 – Ground-breaking for the church
June 30, 1923 – Completion of the rectory
July 6, 1924 – First Mass celebrated in OLV

September 7, 1924 – Dedication of the Church by
Bishop Thomas E. Molloy
April 10, 1929 – Father James F. Irwin is appointed
the second Pastor of Our Lady of Victory
September 6, 1930 – OLV Convent is officially
opened
May 3, 1931 – Dedication of the OLV Convent
takes place
1932 – Dedication of Our Lady of Victory School
under the direction of the Sister of St. Joseph of
Brentwood. Sister Flora Eugene, CSJ was the first
principal and superior.
June 19, 1939 – Associate Pastor Father Joseph
Salmon died suddenly on his 15th Anniversary of
Ordination – a shrine of the Crucifixion outside the
church is dedicated in his memory
March 17, 1961 – Monsignor Thomas J. Feeney is
appointed the third Pastor of Our Lady of Victory
upon the death of Msgr. Irwin
November 25, 1962 – Dedication of the OLV New
School Extension
June 24, 1974 – Death of Monsignor Feeney
August 1, 1974 – Appointment of Father Charles J.
Nosser as the fourth Pastor of Our Lady of Victory
2006 – Appointment of Father John V. O’Farrell as
the fifth Pastor of Our Lady of Victory
September 8, 2012 – Re-dedication of Our Lady of
Victory Church
We have a great history—this weekend we give
thanks to God for the role that OLV has played in
the lives of its parishioners for 95 years - and we
look forward to a continued place of importance in
our lives moving forward!
Bishop Andrzej Presentation
Bishop Andrzej will be here at OLV to offer a
presentation on the Freedom of Religion. He will
speak in the church on this Monday, Oct. 24th at
7:30 pm.
Bishop Andrzej is an engaging speaker who will
be sharing his personal experiences of growing up in
Poland during Communist rule.
Adult Education on the Mass
I will be offering two presentations on THE
MASS. They will be offered on Thursday evenings,
Oct. 27th and Nov. 3rd at 7:30 pm in Memorial

By learning more about the Mass, we have a
greater chance of getting more out of our experience
of attending Mass. All parishioners are welcome,
particularly teachers and catechists; and those who
serve in the liturgical roles of lector, greeter, usher,
choir member or EM.
Praised be the name of Jesus Christ

NEXT WEEKEND - SECOND COLLECTION
Next week, October 29/30, our parish will take up
the Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military
Services (AMS). The guiding mission of the AMS is
to
provide the sacraments—and the re-affirming
Word of Christ— to the men and women serving in our
armed forces, patients in VA Medical Centers, civilians working for the federal government beyond U.S.
borders, and the families of these populations. To
provide this services they need your help – the AMS
receives no federal funding.
OUR LADY OF VICTORY SCHOOL
A PARISH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
ACCREDITED BY THE MIDDLE STATES ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS
Dear OLV Parishioners,
IMPORTANT DATES
This week, I ask all of you to keep our eighth
graders in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare to sit for the Catholic High School Entrance
Exam on Saturday. We know our students are well
prepared. Our teachers make sure of it and our
parents are committed to it. Many students have
even been coming to the “Co-Op Review Class”
that has been meeting at OLV School on Thursday
afternoons since September. I’m sure I can count
on the entire parish community to pray for this
special group of students this week!
Sincerely,
Peg Augello
OLV School Principal
A Prayer for our Eighth Graders:
Holy Spirit, Giver of all good gifts, enter into
my mind and heart. Give
me the gift of knowledge
and the grace to use it
wisely. Help me in all
my endeavors. Give me
perseverance and
fortitude.
Help my memory, that I may remember what I
learn and recall it when necessary. Guide me in
the classroom. You who are the
Way, the Truth, and the Life. Amen.
