TEAM TORQUE NEWS AUGUST 29, 2006 VOLUME 2, NUMBER 7 A2LA ACCREDITATION ANNOUNCED Team Torque Inc. is now A2LA Accredited to ISO 17025:2005 and ANSI/NCSL Z540-1 We are happy to announce that our journey toward A2LA Accreditation is in the books! July 31, 2006, our Torque Wrench and Torque Tester Labs received the formal A2LA Certificate and Scope associated with these highest international standards in the calibration industry. “This recognition is the result of many years of preparation and work,” reported business owner and company president Mark Anderson. “Our company’s dedication to quality has never been higher. This accreditation makes Team Torque’s services available to additional customers worldwide, particularly those seeking this highest level of quality.” TEAM TORQUE INC. 1231 PARK AVE BISMARCK, ND 58504 The A2LA Accreditation includes a Mutual Recognition Agreement with other A2LA Labs throughout the United States and other countries. This helps assure torque customers that the services performed on their tools are conducted at the best level possible. We continue to provide free formal printed certificates with all calibrations, which ensures quality system compliance for the end user. “Quality is not an act, it is a habit.” ~ Aristotle MANAGEMENT CORNER Problem Solving or Problem Prevention? In most cases, problem solving happens first. Then, after the most urgent problems are out of the way, the team may, and should, look at opportunities to build in problem prevention. The payoff can be enormous. Let's take an example from our personal lives - buying a used car. We discover that a brake light is out, the gasoline tank has a slow drip leak and the radio doesn't work. These are candidates for problem solving and need to be taken care of right away. Attention can later focus on problem prevention such as developing procedures for regular oil checks, radiator water levels, etc. These are examples of measures that could prevent costly engine repairs or replacement. Although the process of becoming A2LA Accredited is complete, this is merely just another leg in the overall adventure in our calibration expedition. Team Torque continues to grow our company through quality improvements and expansion. We will be audited at least annually by A2LA to help ensure our services meet that organization’s stringent requirements. And, of course, our Quality team continues ongoing internal audits of our processes and policies to verify the work we perform meets our own high expectations. QUALITY IS AS QUALITY DOES “Quality questions create a quality life. Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.” ~ Anthony Robbins Coach or Controller? Sometimes the line between coaching and controlling is a blurred one. Almost any facilitator or team leader will tell you that theirs is a coaching style. But is it? A: ISO 17025:2005 is the current international standard that specifies the general requirements for the competence of labs to carry out calibrations. It helps ensure that all accredited organizations are performing services at a level that meets or exceeds the needs of end users (i.e. customers). From a technical standpoint, this standard more than meets the needs set forth by ISO 9000 and ISO 9001. For all customers, it gives confidence that work performed by an accredited lab is at the best level possible. Q: What is ANSI/NCSL Z540-1? Imagine you are painting your 10-year-old child’s bedroom. It looks like fun to him and begs to do it. You know there will be mistakes and the job will take a lot longer if he does it. A: Like ISO 17025:2005, this standard provides a manner in which confidence is promoted in Calibration Labs. Accreditation to ANSI/NCSL Z540-1 means that an organization has met or exceeded all its strict requirements. Do you keep doing it yourself and give him a running explanation of your activity, or do you bite the bullet and let him do the job with patient guidance from you? It provides further definition of technical areas from within ISO 17025:2005. Both standards were created from previous United States military and ISO guides & standards. Let's hope it is the latter. The point is that whatever you would likely do with your son is what you would probably do with members of your work team.
