But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate - we cannot consecrate -- we cannot hallow
-- this ground. The brave men, living and
dead, who struggled here, have
consecrated it, far above our poor power to
add or detract. The world will little note,
nor long remember what we say here, but it
can never forget what they did here. It is
for us the living, rather, to be dedicated
here to the unfinished work which they who
fought here have thus far so nobly
advanced. It is rather for us to be here
dedicated to the great task remaining

On June 1, 1865, Senator Charles Sumner
referred to the most famous speech ever
given by President Abraham Lincoln. In his
eulogy on the slain president, he called the
Gettysburg Address a “monumental act.” He
said Lincoln was mistaken that “the world
will little note, nor long remember what we
say here.” Rather, the Bostonian remarked,

less important than the speech.”
There are five known copies of the speech in
Lincoln’s handwriting, each with a slightly
different text, and named for the people who first
received them: Nicolay, Hay, Everett, Bancroft,
and Bliss (which is found on page 1 of this
newsletter and is the version most often
reproduced, notably on the walls of the Lincoln
Memorial in Washington). Two copies apparently
were written before delivering the speech; the
remaining ones were produced months later for
soldier benefit events. Despite widely-circulated
stories to the contrary, the president did not dash
off a copy aboard a train to Gettysburg. Lincoln
carefully prepared his major speeches in advance;
his steady, even script in
every manuscript is
consistent with a firm
writing surface, not the
notoriously bumpy Civil
War-era trains.

newspapers of the era,
feeding modern-day
confusion about the
authoritative text.

Internet about the George Kaiser Family Foundation’s
world-class park and recreation area planned for Tulsa

I was excited to see a recent presentation by Jeff
Stava, with the Kaiser Foundation, about the plans
which, having been unveiled June 18 to a packed
crowd, are generating significant excitement in and
around Tulsa.

we eagerly anticipate seeing progress as these
plans take shape at 26th and Riverside!”

Stava explained that once completed The Gathering Place will provide programs in the
following categories: Cultural, Arts & Crafts, Physical Activities, Natural Science &
Gardens, and (new/different) Yearly Events & Festivals. Activities centered on
children will include curriculum to augment what teachers can use in the classroom,
helping to supplement or replace school programs eliminated because of insufficient
funding. The projected $110-150 million project hopes to have a grand opening in the
Fall of 2017 or late Spring 2018.
Riverside Drive as long-time Tulsans have known it is on the brink of transformation.

President Donna Hantwerker has had
her committees busy since the gavel hit
the podium electing her president in
March. Good things are in the works
for the Chapter’s benefit.
Business Partner Relations
Committee, chaired by Charlene Reid,
has met to discuss initial plans for the
2015 Tulsa Legal Business Expo
scheduled for March 26 at the Mayo
Hotel’s Crystal Ballroom. Jim
Hoffmeister and Judy Anderson round
out the committee and are excited
about the prospects for next year.
Community Connection Committee,
chaired by Janet Hall, met for lunch to
consider opportunities for the Chapter
to “give back.” Our members are
always generous in their participation,
and the ideas generated by this
Committee will result in meaningful
activities. Along with Janet, Cheryl
Barrett, Mary Chastain, Donna

and they’ve already held two planning
meetings with their group, Jim
Hoffmeister, Cheryl Barrett, Sherri
Dawson, Cheri Kempthorne, and Judy
Anderson. The lineup for 2014-2015
education is impressive as the group
assures all disciplines of education are
covered: Communication &
Organizational Management, Human
Resources Management, Financial
Management, Legal Industry/Business
Management (includes marketing and
planning techniques), and Operations
Management (includes technology).
Survey Committee co-chaired and
filled by Jim Hoffmeister, Barbara
Williams, and Mary Chastain, first
sought your input for suggested
modifications to the survey’s
questionnaire which is now in your
hands for completion. How greatly the
Chapter appreciates these three who
have served on this Committee for
many … did I say many? ...years.

Employers must use good judgment

Have an effective social media policy.

Give notice of the employer’s right to
monitor (i.e., no expectation of privacy).

Prohibit use that affects productivity.

Prohibit discrimination, harassment,
defamation.

Prohibit use adverse to your organization’s reputation, interests or business
relationships.
He discussed hiring, discipline, and termination; and he drew some interesting distinctions for what is allowed and not allowed during interviewing.

Transitions: Two of our members
have new opportunities in the profession. Andrea Everage is now with a
firm in Oakland, CA; and, with this
move, has returned to the state where
her parents live. Lorri Salyards has
returned to Denver with a firm there.
Lorri, too, is now reunited in the state
where her family resides. While we
will miss these ladies and their contributions to ALA Tulsa, we send them
off with sincere well wishes and congratulations.
Sympathies are extended for the recent death of Cindy Taylor’s longtime significant other and with the
passing of Janice Pierce’s mother. To
both of these ladies, please know of
our concern and warm thoughts are
with you.

SUMMER IS HERE!! Things are
heating up outside and inside at ALA,
too! Chapter Leadership Institute will
be July 17—20 in San Antonio, and we
have several people attending this year.
CLI is where chapter leaders meet to
learn the newest and best practices for
chapter management. Watch for a
newsletter article on the experience
soon.
ALA Business of Law conferences are
coming this fall. The conferences
provide education and networking
opportunities for all members. This year
they are being handled a little differently
than in the past. There are four similar
conferences but in different locations,
rather than the previous format of having
a different conference in each of ALA’s
six regions.
This year’s events are designed so that
each location will have many of the
same educational sessions and speakers.
Attendees are free to select the most
convenient conference location, or date.
Sessions will address today’s human
resources, facilities, communications,
finance, technology, and overall
operations issues. If the Business of
Law Conference closest to you is not on
an ideal date, just choose the one that
best fits your schedule. You will meet
with business partners that provide
services and products to assist you as a
legal professional. There will also be
keynote speakers and networking events
where you can mingle with business

partners, speakers, and other law firm
professionals.
In addition, there are new specialty
conferences this year.

Closer to home, the Survey Committee
has finished putting the finishing touches
on the 2014 ALA Tulsa Salary, Benefits
and Technology Survey; and it went out
via e-mail as I was preparing this article.
Please complete your survey and return it
by the deadline of Friday, July 25, 2014.
The Community Connection Committee
has met, and has some exciting things
coming up that will allow the chapter to
give back to our community. Details
will be released soon.
Our Chapter’s annual Retreat will be
held August 8, 2014 at the Mayo hotel
with keynote speaker Kristine Sexter
presenting, How to be a Phenomenally
Effective Trainer and Communicator.
Things are beginning to get exciting, so
let’s welcome summer and the many
scheduled events that will assist us in our
professional development, give us a
chance to give back to the community,
and allow us to take some time for rest
and relaxation.
