Project Information
Based on the successful experience of the carbon capture pilot at the Gaobeidian coal-fired power
plant in Beijing (CO2 capture capacity of 3,000 tonnes per annum), the Huaneng Group established a
larger demonstration plant at the coal-fired Shanghai Shidongkou 2nd power plant. The larger project
adopted the same CO2 capture technology and process as the Gaobeidian pilot.
The Shanghai Shidongkou demonstration plant became operational at the end of 2009 and was then
the largest post-combustion CO2 capture project in the world. The captured CO2 has a purity in excess
of 99.5% and is re-used in the beverage industry.
At the time the demonstration plant became operational, the Shanghai Shidongkou 2 nd power station
had an installed generation capacity of around 1,200 MW and the capture facilities treated around 3%
of the facility’s flue gas stream. (Additional coal-fired capacity of around 1,320 MW was commissioned
in 2011).
The demonstration project has three broad goals:

Demonstrate a medium scale post-combustion carbon capture process for a coal-fired power
station in China

Obtain detailed engineering design and costing data and operational experience to underpin
the commercial development of carbon capture technology in coal-fired power stations.

Provide CO2 for Shanghai region (welding and dry ice)
The post-combustion carbon capture demonstration scope included the following elements:

Installation of a 100,000 -120,000 tonne per year CO2 capture plant treating a side stream of
flue gas from the power station

Installation of a CO2 purification unit for food grade CO2 production
