Abbot Hall is launching an art competition for 16-22 year-olds in Cumbria. Abbot Hall has a long tradition of showing exhibitions (and also collected works of art) by artists who have been nominated for Tate's national Turner Prize. We have named the Romney Art Prize after the artist George Romney (1734 – 1802). Romney was a famous English portrait painted who lived in Cumbria. Several of his paintings are on display at Abbot Hall. The Romney Art Prize is designed to use historical and contemporary art to inspire today's artists and to support talented 16-22 year-olds in Cumbria. Who is eligible to participate? You must be born in Cumbria OR living in Cumbria at the time of submission (proof of address required). You must be aged between 16 and 22 years old at the time of submission (proof of age required). What is the criteria for submissions? In 2017, the Romney Art Prize is inspired by Abbot Hall's exhibition of George Shaw: My Back to Nature (which runs from 13 January – 11 March 2017). Shaw was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2011. The theme of the 2017 Romney Art Prize is: Urban Landscapes Your submission will be a two dimensional work of art and not exceed 1m X 1m in size. Your submission can be made in any media with the exception of toxic or unstable materials. Important: If you have any queries about criteria outlined here, you should contact LA at least 30 days before the submission deadline. The risk is that artwork made from a substance that is harmful (either to people or other art in the gallery) cannot be brought into Abbot Hall Art Gallery and your entry will be disqualified. Contact: [email protected] www.abbothall.org.uk How is the Romney Art Prize judged? The prize will be judged by a panel of people against an agreed criteria. The panel will look at the work and consider: • the quality of the artist's work both in concept and execution • how the artist has interpreted the theme of the 2017 Romney Art Prize • how the artist has taken influence from George Shaw's exhibition or orther art in the art gallery What is the prize? The winner's artwork will be displayed in the entrance at Abbot Hall later in 2017 (date to be confirmed with the winner). How do I enter the Romney Art Prize? Visit Abbot Hall to see the George Shaw: My Back to Nature exhibition between 13 January –11 March 2017. Please note that all visitors are invited sketch in the galleries. Please note that photography of the exhibition is not permitted. Create an original artwork between 13 January and 30 April 2017. Submit by email a highly resolution image of one piece of original artwork that you have made inspired by the theme of the prize, together with a submission form (attached below). We will contact you if your work is shortlisted. If your art work is shortlisted, you will need to send (or deliver) the original piece to Abbot Hall so that we can judge the winner and two runners up. If you want your artwork returned after the competition, you must be able to collect it in person.
