Greater Olean Area CHAMBER of COMMERCE December 2013 • Volume 20 • Issue 12 THE LIGHTS WILL RETURN (This letter was sent to a young lady in the Olean area. GOACC responded to her concern about the holiday lights in 2013). Dear Alyssa, We were given your letter here at the Chamber office that you had sent to Senator Young and felt that you needed a response from not only the Chamber, but the Santa Claus Lane Committee. Believe me no one is more disappointed about not putting the lights up on North Union and West State than all of us here at the Chamber. We have worked hard over many years to keep the tradition alive, but when the safety of the citizens of Olean and all the visitors who come visit Olean during this period could be in harms way because of placing the decorations on unsafe poles, then we have to take a stance that it is not worth it if it is going to harm even one person during this 5 week period. The Chamber is responsible for all the lights, both on the streets and in the Parks, but it is the City who dictates whether it is safe or unsafe for those decorations to be put up or not. Unfortunately we were told that they could not be put up this year. The Chamber is asking for people to be patient because with the upcoming construction and new poles that will eventually be placed on North Union, we will work with the City to bring back Santa Claus Lane. The new decorations on the poles will be at eye level and the full garland with lights will once again hang over the street. Believe me, we miss the garlands and stars across the road and want them back as soon as we can make that happen. Thank you for your letter and interest at this special time of year. Students who visit the Center are guided through hands-on simulated space missions that teach them about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in a fun and interactive environment. They solve real-world problems in an environment that mimics the thrill of a space adventure. The Center offers two missions. The Voyage to Mars is designed for students in grades 7 through 12, which takes them on a journey to the red planet in the year 2076. The Rendezvous With Halley Comet is intended for students in grades 5 through 12 whose mission is to lead a crew to outer space in search of the famous comet. Both missions accommodate 16 to 30 people. Students at the Center have also enjoyed programs like The Great Rocket Design Challenge and Simple Machines or Engines, and activities at the nearby Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University. In the spring the Center plans introduce Micronauts Mini Discovery Missions for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. Teacher training in STEM educational activities is also available at no charge to interested educators. In addition, missions and activities are available to business groups and community groups. Training for Your Business The Southern Tier Child Advocacy Center has an important training that they are offering to businesses and organizations in the community. The Darkness to Light Child Abuse Prevention Training for adults is proven to change how adults respond when they have a suspicion of possible child sexual abuse in our community. Your organization does not have to directly work with children to benefit from this training. As caring members of our community, we can all work together to make sure kids are safe from abuse. Their goal is to train 5% of our community in how we can all play an important role in preventing child sexual abuse. By providing this training for your staff, you are making a statement that we will not tolerate child sexual abuse in our community. The training is 2.5 hours long and can be done in one or two sessions. Training dates and times are flexible to the schedule of your staff. All participants will receive a certificate of completion. If you would like to have the Darkness to Light Child Abuse Prevention Training for your staff, or would like more information, please contact Denise Straub, Program Coordinator at 716-372-8532.
