CAPRICORN DRIVES Rockhampton Beef & Bulls Six bull statues representing the main breeds of the area are situated throughout Rockhampton in recognition of Rockhampton’s Beef Capital of Australia title. Follow this trail to see these statues, but keep your eyes peeled for other life-size bulls decorating premises around Rocky. These fun and quirky statues are part of a competition run in conjunction with the triannual Beef Expo, which has become an icon event for the Australian beef industry and a major event for the State of Queensland. Approx trail time: 45min Approx trail distance: 21km the designated parking bay. Here you’ll find the Romagnola erected in 1997, added to the city to commemorate the Italian Beef Cattle World Congress staged in conjunction with Beef ‘97. Next stop is the southern entrance to Rockhampton. Return to Lower Dawson Road and turn left to continue over Yeppen Lagoon Bridge and through to the roundabout where the Brahman stands welcoming visitors to the town. This impressive beast, erected in 2000, is the largest of all the bull statues and represents the breed most suitable to Capricorn’s Heading north from Customs House Visitor Information Centre travel north and turn left at the first roundabout into Archer Street. Continue down Archer Street until you come to the first set of traffic lights. Turn left onto George Street. Drive along George Street which will then become Gladstone Road, passing through three sets of traffic lights, then keep your eye on the median strip. You’re about to see a erected in 1978. This Braford breed was created locally by Adam Rea in 1946 by crossing Brahman and Hereford cattle, in order to combat drought and ticks. Get back on track and follow Lower Dawson Road. Staying in the left lane veer through Gladstone Road and George Street and travel to the end where you’ll come to North Street. Turn left and again continue through to the end of the street where you’ll find Rockhampton’s airport. Here you’ll find the This statue Droughtmaster. was erected in 1994 coinciding with yet another Beef Expo. Kershaw Gardens and Stockland Shopping Centre on the right then take a left at the third set of traffic lights that lead you on to Yaamba Road. You will shortly see on the median strip another Brahman erected in 1978 by the Australian Brahman Breeders Association. The final official bull is found on the north side of the river. Retrace your tracks along North Street and follow through to a set of traffic lights on Bolsover Street where you need to turn right. Take your next left and you’ll find yourself on Neville Hewitt Bridge. You will pass through two sets of traffic lights and pass the Visitor Information Centres climate. Brahman contribute 50% of Australia’s beef cattle production. Circle around and head back into town. The mighty Santa Gertrudis awaits. On your left, located in Frank Forde Park, is a statue erected in 1985 with support from Central Queensland breeders. Get hands on with this bull, by turning left at Frank Forde Park and stopping in the designated area on Upper Dawson Road. Keep on moving. Continue along Gladstone Road, through one set of lights, eventually coming to O’Shannesy Park on the left.
