Newsletter of the Purr-fect Cat Shelter Visit our website: www.purrfectcatshelter.org Spring 2014 Shelter Message Center 508-533-5855 A NEW YEAR + GREAT CATS = “PURR-FECT” ADOPTIONS! SEE WHO’S NEW! “Tammy” is a new arrival to the shelter and is a gorgeous, longhaired, brown tabby. She, along with her two older kittens, were surrendered to The Purr-fect Cat Shelter due to a family member suffering severe burns and unable to be around the cats any longer. Tammy was not spayed at the time she was surrendered so a visit to the Veterinarian for spay was first on the list before coming to the shelter. Tammy is a very sweet and gentle cat who loves attention from all the volunteers. She's ready to find her new forever home preferably as an only cat or with her daughter, Tiger Lily! “Tiger Lily” is an absolutely, adorable brown tabby who quickly became a favorite among the volunteers when she arrived with her mother Tammy. Tiger Lily has a loving purr-sonality, is inquisitive and enjoys energetic play time. This sweet little girl would be great with a young family in search of a feline who would be a great companion and provide hours of entertainment. This is "Barnaby" a very handsome, older kitten with stunning brown tiger markings who was trapped as a feral cat with his sibling "Arlo". Arlo has already been adopted and now Barnaby is looking for his forever family. Barnaby took his time coming out of his shell but now he is a very fun-loving cat who would need a feline companion to romp and play with. He especially enjoys playing with hard ball and bell type toys. Soft mousy toys are usually found swimming in his water dish! Barnaby has a wonderful purrr-sonality which shows more each and every day. RECENT ADOPTIONS It’s been a busy winter at PCS with lots of great adoptions! RECENT FUNDRAISER NEWS “MESSAGES FROM THE OTHER SIDE” We had a terrific turnout at our new fundraiser “Messages from the Other Side” with Lisa Lanno, a local Psychic Spirit Medium, which was held at the Medway V.F.W. in January. The connections, validations and messages Lisa received from friends, family and even pets that have passed were remarkable. For some people even a bit emotional. During the “Psychic Question” segment participants were able to ask Lisa a specific psychic question. We would like to thank everyone who brought items from our wish list. Our cars were overflowing with gifts for the kitties!! It was an interesting and engaging afternoon that raised over $1,500 for the shelter. Thank you to everyone who came out in support of this new fundraiser and for all the much needed supplies you donated. We appreciate the volunteers who helped at the event and provided refreshments for everyone to enjoy. Look for this fundraiser to be back again next year!! FUR BOWL 2014 Our other winter fundraiser was a “striking” success at Ryan Family Amusements in Millis, March 2rd! The Fur Bowl is always a great event for families, friends and co-workers to get together for some bowling fun while helping homeless cats and kittens. Over 84 bowlers knocked down pins and cheering them on from behind the lanes were others who also came to support the shelter but preferred not to bowl. The fabulous raffle table was buzzing with bowlers and onlookers taking chances to win something to take home. Refreshments including cookies, cupcakes, whoopie pies, drinks and more, kept everyone well-nourished for the afternoon! Thanks to everyone who came out to support PCS and the cats and kittens we care for. This year over $3,000 was raised for the shelter! Your participation in any and all our events makes a difference in the lives of each and every cat or kitten that comes to us to be adopted into a loving new home. Thank you! LOTTERY TICKET RAFFLE Thanks to everyone who purchased raffle tickets for our recent MA State Lottery Scratch Ticket Raffle. The drawing was held at the Fur Bowl and it was amazing how quiet the bowling alley got as people anticipated the drawing of the winner! Congratulations to John C. who was the winner of 100 - $5 MA State Lottery scratch tickets. We hope your winnings are BIG!! The Purr-fect Times - Spring 2014 ~2~ PCS BAKE SALE Although a bit chilly for a mid-April spring day it was a great day for the Annual PCS Bake Sale! The Bake Sale was held at WalMart in Bellingham and the enticing cakes, pies, cookies, bars, candy and other sweet treats raised over $1,400 for the shelter. Thank you to all the PCS Bakers who lovingly baked so many delightful and delicious items for everyone to enjoy. The PCS Bake Sale is always a very popular fundraiser. Many thanks to the volunteers who worked hard to make this another great success and we appreciate everyone who came out to support the shelter by purchasing the tasty treats! We hope you enjoyed all your goodies! PCS IN THE COMMUNITY The Purr-fect Cat Shelter volunteers continue to get the word out about adopting, volunteering, responsible pet ownership and more by participating in local opportunities in various communities. Check out what we were up to over the winter and early this spring. Barnes and Noble Gift Wrapping PCS Volunteers were on hand for three gift wrapping sessions at Barnes and Noble in Bellingham in November and December 2013. Shoppers took advantage of having their purchased holiday gifts wrapped and volunteers had fun talking with people about the shelter and seeing families that have adopted from us. All donations raised at the gift wrapping went directly to PCS. Many thanks to the volunteers who staffed the table and shared holiday greetings from the kitties at the shelter! Charles River Bank – Business of the Month During the month of February, The Purr-fect Cat Shelter was highlighted as Business of the Month at Charles River Bank locations in Medway and Bellingham. On display were current pictures and biographies of cats available for adoption. Also available for patrons was information on adopting, volunteering, upcoming fundraisers and general pet ownership. Thank you to Charles River Bank in Medway and Bellingham for your help in getting the word out about The Purr-fect Cat Shelter. Every opportunity to help these wonderful feline companions find their forever home is very special to our organization. Craft Fair Raffle Tables We greatly appreciate the opportunity to benefit from a Raffle Table at two local craft shows held by Creative Craft Shows. The raffle table at the Medway show in November and the Franklin show in March was filled with beautiful items donated by the crafters and vendors at the show. All money raised through the sale of raffle tickets went directly to the Purr-fect Cat Shelter. We will be attending the Rose Moon Craft and Vendor Show June 29 th at the Medway V.F.W. 123 Holliston St. Medway from 10am – 3pm. We hope you’ll stop by and take a chance on some great raffle prizes to support PCS! Millis Rabies Clinic Volunteers of the Purr-fect Cat Shelter were on hand the first weekend in April to help staff the Millis Rabies Clinic. The Millis Board of Health and the Millis/Medway Animal Control Officer in conjunction with Dr. Jeffrey DiPaolo of Main St. Veterinary Hospital vaccinated a total of 94 pets. Thank you to our volunteers for their time in helping with this very important clinic. Massachusetts law requires that cat and dog owners vaccinate their pets for rabies. That includes all pets whether they are strictly indoors or roam outside. Protect your pet and your family by keeping vaccinations up to date! The Purr-fect Times - Spring 2014 ~4~ “Littered” Lawn Fundraiser Our “Littered Lawn” fundraiser has been a unique and fun way to raise money for the shelter during the summer months. The decorative wooden feline Moms and kittens (as shown below) will be out wandering around again this year and appearing on lawns in nearby communities. We plan to start this fundraiser in late spring. To participate in this fundraiser you simply pick someone you would like us to “Litter”. For a donation of $15 for Mom and 2 kittens or $25 for Mom and 4 kittens, the feline family will appear on the designated friend’s lawn. Although there is no donation required for us to come take them away, the person you picked will have the option, for a donation, to choose a person they would like to “Litter”. Who knows, it may end up on your lawn! Information on the fundraiser will accompany the cats and can be found on the Mom cat. This fundraiser is done in good fun and the feline family will not spend more than 24-48 hours at any location. Please note: “Littering” cannot be done on public property, apartment or condo complexes. Don’t want to be “Littered”? We can cover you with our “Anti-Litter” Insurance policy. A minimal premium donation of $10 guarantees the feline family won’t wander on your property for the duration of the fundraiser. If you would like to select someone to “Litter”, fill out the “Litter a Friend” form below. Send the form with your donation to PCS, P.O. Box 548, Medway, MA 02053 and your friend will be put on our list. If you prefer “Anti-Litter” Insurance, submit your policy form below with your premium. We know this will be another fun fundraiser and with your support and participation it will also help raise awareness of the Purr-fect Cat Shelter. The Purr-fect Times - Spring 2014 ~5~ “PURR-FECT” CATS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION Meet “Flidget”, a handsome orange tiger who immediately won the hearts of the volunteers upon arrival to the shelter. He was surrendered because his owner was moving and couldn't take him to the new residence. Flidget had a visit to the Veterinarian where he was brought up to date on his vaccines, had blood work and was scheduled for a dental cleaning. He's had his dental cleaning, with a few extractions, and he is now ready and waiting to go to his new home! Flidget has a loving, gentle nature and would do well with other animals. He would make a wonderful family cat or he'd be great with an older couple who want a fabulous feline to grace their laps! Imagine going to the local supermarket and as you're putting your groceries in the back seat of your car a very friendly cat jumps in! Well, this is what happened to a woman and because she wasn't sure what to do she took the darling feline home and called The Purr-fect Cat Shelter. Tiny "Tina" was picked up and held for the required amount of time to see if she would be claimed. Since no one came forward looking for her, she was sent to the Veterinarian for testing, vaccines and spay. Now she is at the shelter looking for her forever home. Tina is a young adult, Tortie with a very sweet personality. She loves to play with the volunteers and would make a wonderful addition to a family. Tina is dealing with the other cats at the shelter but she may prefer to be the one and only feline so she can have all the attention. Pretty Miss "Maisey" is a young adult who was hanging out in a barn in a nearby community with an older kitten which was presumed to be hers. Wanting to do something before the cold winter arrived, a lady called the shelter and we proceeded to trap both cats and sent them to the Veterinarian for routine checks as we do with all cats that come into our care. Maisey is now at the shelter awaiting her new family. She is a very sweet, gentle and quiet cat. Maisey is an attractive dilute tortoiseshell that would do well in an adult household and another non-aggresive feline companion. Sweet "Sammy" was formerly an outdoor cat and the people who owned her unfortunately neglected to have her spayed! Once the owner noticed she was expecting PCS was called. Sammy gave birth to 5 adorable kittens, all of which have been adopted. Sammy arrived at the shelter once her babies were weaned and after a visit to the Veterinarian to be spayed and vaccinated. She is a beautiful Tortie with a loving personality. She is a quiet girl and would do best in a quiet home as well. Sammy really enjoys attention from the volunteers especially being petted and groomed. She also enjoys finding a high spot in the room to watch what is happening below. We hope this darling girl will find her forever home soon. "Marnie" is a very sweet cat picked up by a local Animal Control Officer. She was already spayed and spent the required amount of time with Animal Control to see if anyone called to claim her. Having gone unclaimed it can only be assumed she was dumped by her owner! Marnie is very friendly although she isn't enjoying being around so many other cats. We hope to find a home with no young children and where she will be your one and only feline. Marnie is a pretty, black and white domestic shorthair and if you look closely you'll see her distinct diamond shape of white fur on her face. Proof she is a real jewel! The Purr-fect Times - Spring 2014 ~6~ Poor “Bella” had been alone for 4 months in her home while her owner was in the hospital. She finally came home and after 10 days was taken to a nursing home. A caregiver called PCS to see if we would take Bella and immediately we went to get her. Her world has been shaken up! She has had so many changes in such a short period of time. She is a pretty, all black, domestic short hair. She loves being groomed and fussed over by the volunteers but she is a bit intimidated by the other cats in her room. Since Bella has been the only cat in her prior home, we are hoping to find her an adult home where she will be the one and only pet. “Audrey” & “Amos” are older kittens who were trapped in a neighboring community. The spent some time in a foster home and are now at the shelter ready to find their new home. Amos loves to interact with the volunteers, is playful and purrs away as he's being groomed and petted. Audrey is more cautious but is happy to engage in kitten play with her brother. Both have beautiful tiger markings. Audrey is a brown tiger and Amos is a gray tiger. They are an adorable pair waiting for their purr-fect home. This is "Halle", a sweet, black and white, spayed female who was surrendered to the shelter along with her daughter "Charm". Charm was recently adopted and now Halle is waiting for her new family to take her home. Both had been living in the basement of the home for quite some time as their owner no longer wanted to deal with them. They were so greasy and matted we had to have them professionally groomed! Halle looks beautiful now and absolutely loves all the attention the volunteers are giving her. Although she is fine with other cats, we feel she would truly love to have a very kind and loving human to dote on her. The Purr-fect Cat Shelter was very pleased to have been selected as 1 of 10 animal rescue organizations throughout the country to receive a $1,000.00 grant from the Adopt-a-Pet.com Veterinary Care Fund. Grants were awarded to shelters caring for rescued animals in need of medical care. A grant application was submitted highlighting the story of rescuing kittens Molly and Hailey last year. Molly required eye surgery and Hailey a leg amputation. With your donations to the Molly and Hailey Fund and the awarded grant, the surgeries were able to be financially covered. If you didn’t already know, Hailey has since been adopted and Molly is patiently waiting for her special new family to find her. We greatly appreciate being chosen for the Veterinary Care Fund Grant and all that Adopt-a-Pet.com does to help us bring homeless cats and kittens together with a loving family. To read our story please visit the Adopt-a-Pet.com page: http://shelterblog.adoptapet.com/2014/01/grant-recipient-thepurr-fect-cat-shelter/ We are still seeking recipes for our new “PURR-FECT BEGINNINGS and ENDINGS” Cookbook featuring appetizer and dessert recipes from you, our supporters and friends. Line 1 Line 2 Line 3 Line 4 Tabby Patterns Cats are very unique animals, as they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Tabby cats, in particular, are very popular in American households. Some people may believe this feline is a specific breed, but the name "tabby" only refers to the pattern of the coat. Tabby is the most common cat coat pattern. Felines with this pattern have thin lines around their face and an "M" shape on their foreheads. Here is a bit about the five different types of tabbies: 1. Classic – A classic tabby has wide swirling patterns around its sides. This type is often called a "blotched tabby" because the swirls look like smudges. 2. Ticked – Sometimes called an Abyssinian tabby; this patterned cat doesn't have the signature stripes on its body. However, the face markings distinguish this animal as a tabby. 3. Spotted – This tabby has spot-like markings all over its coat. Sometimes the spots are large, other times they are small. 4. Patched – The patched tabby often has red and brown patches around its coat and sometimes is referred to as a "tortie." 5. Mackerel – This type of tabby has thin parallel stripes running down its sides, which is how it got its "tiger cat" nickname. Resource - animalrescuesite.com The Purr-fect Times - Spring 2014 ~8~ The Purr-fect Cat Shelter provides care to cats and kittens at the shelter every day, 365 days a year. There’s no day off in the world of animal rescue! We depend on our dedicated Cat Caregivers to provide care for the animals every day, twice a day. Other volunteers check our message center for calls many times a day in case there is a situation that needs immediate attention. It takes coordination and commitment on the part of our volunteers to provide the physical needs of the shelter. But that’s only one component of a successful animal rescue organization like The Purr-fect Cat Shelter. We also rely on you, our members and supporters to help us financially. With your generous donations we are able to give the cats and kittens everything they need while they await their purr-fect family to come adopt them. Your gifts make the lives of the cats and kittens temporarily in our care wholesome and comfortable. Our volunteers who care for them daily make sure they are loved and healthy. Like the shelter community, they believe in the strength of the relationship between people and their pets. Shelters nurture that relationship through their dedication to finding good homes for the animals in their care. Hill’s nurtures it through the highest-quality nutrition. The Purr-fect Cat Shelter is proud to be part of the Hill's Food, Shelter & Love Program which gives us the opportunity to feed a high quality food at a substantial savings. No amount of time can erase the memory of a good cat, and no amount of masking tape can ever totally remove his fur from your couch. ~Leo Dworken ~11~ Non Profit Org.
